Chanel POV
It was my first day in Santa Cruz High and I was really nervous. I walked to school, which was only fifteen minutes away from our apartment. Walking made me miss my car so much.
You see, my dad just left us a month ago without explanation. He only left a note to mom that he loves someone else and that his lawyer will be contacting my mom soon for the divorce papers. I was so angry at him for not facing us. Such a coward man and not fit to be called my dad. He left us with nothing, except for the house. He even withdrew my college funds!
Me and my mom left San Francisco three days ago as we will not be able to afford to live there in the long run. We have decided to save as much as we can for my college tuition. I was vying for a scholarship, but in case everything fails, there will always be plan B. We sold the house and I also sold my car. It was really devastating to transfer, as I have lived all my life in San Fo. I was one of the popular girls in the neighborhood, also in school. Good thing I do not have a boyfriend or not dating someone at the moment. It will only make things more difficult, having a long-distance relationship. It’s only an hour away, I know. But nothing will stay the same.
Mom was lucky enough to find work right away as a secretary at one of the tour guide operators here in Santa Cruz. After I was born, she stopped working and focused on being a housewife and a mother. I will have to find work soon too. Our budget is currently tight this time and having a part time job is one of my top priorities.
I was psyching myself that everything will be fine today. Having my clothes prepared last night – a knee length off white cotton dress paired with my favorite white sneakers, I knew I would be ready to conquer senior high. My choker definitely matches with this outfit. I put my hair up on a messy bun. A little bit of mascara, eyeliner, and lip balm made the difference. Perfect!
I got to school with twenty minutes to spare before the first class. But I have to get to the registrar’s office fast for my class schedule. A few students already littered the hallway, which made my brisk walk to the registrar a little bit difficult. I felt eyes following me and I’m sure they were already talking about the new student. I was in front of the office when I bumped onto the door. Wait! Doors do not have hands! Strong hands encircled around my waist to prevent me from falling.
I looked up and saw the most beautiful deep blue eyes I had ever seen. Sleek dark brown hair. Eye lashes were long. The nose straight. The lips oh-so-inviting! Not to mention those cute dimples! That smile! I took a deep breath and could not help but be intoxicated with his scent, a combination of sandalwood and rainfall.
The man released me from his hold, when he made sure I was on my feet.
“Oh! I am so sorry. I did not notice that the door opened.” I smiled sweetly.
“No worries. See you around.” He winked at me then went on his way. I was shocked with the wink that I have to shake my head and pinch myself. Goodness, Chanel! Flirty on your first day?
I came to my first class, which is AP Calculus, two minutes late. Aargh! Hopefully, the teacher will get me off this time, with me being new to the school. I got lost looking for my locker. I should have gone ahead and looked for my first class, bringing all my books with me. Tsk! I went inside the class and got the shock of the day. More shocked than the wink earlier, yes. It was that the guy at the registrar’s office was standing in front of the class. Mr. s*x-On-Legs! He was wearing a long sleeved light blue shirt, folded to his elbows, and black pants. I can see the muscles on those arms and would have wanted to feel those abs under my hands. I felt my cheeks blushing as I remember how flirty I was with him earlier. Damn, girl, he's your teacher!
“Care to join us, Ms. Owens?” I walked to his table and handed him my class card. “I'm Mr. Alex Wilson. Welcome to Santa Cruz High." He gave me a brief smile, then faced the students. "Class, this is Chanel Owens. She will be joining the school from now on. Please make her feel welcomed.” He looked at me and stretched out his hand pointing to a vacant seat at the middle of the room. “You may sit there, Chanel. I would like to talk to you after class, okay?”
“Yes, Sir.”
I was not able to get his name earlier, because I was busy being nervous. Looking at my class schedule, I found out that his name is Alex Wilson. He started discussing problems and showing the solution on the white board behind him. I was not entirely listening to the lesson itself, but to his deep baritone voice. It was so electrifying that I felt… awake.
“Do you have any questions? If none, please answer page ninety to ninety-two in your book. You have thirty minutes to answer. Give me your book as soon as you are done.”
Oh f**k, what was the lesson about? I grabbed the book from my bag and flipped the page to ninety. Ah! This is so easy. I learned this from last year. Maybe this is some sort of a review. I finished doing all the pages in twenty minutes. I looked around and found out that I was done first. Mr. Wilson must have seen me looking around.
“Are you done, Ms. Owens?”
“Yes, Sir.” I walked to his table and gave him my book. He looked at my answers and his eyes went back again to me.
“Seems like you do not have any catching up to do, Ms. Owens. You got all the answers correct. Did you take Calculus last year?”
“Yes, Sir. I took AB Calculus.”
“So why are taking it again this year?” He looked confused. That made the two of us.
“I enrolled for BC Calculus, Mr. Wilson. There must be a mistake.” He took out my class card and only Calculus was printed on it. He frowned, got a piece of paper and wrote something on it.
“After class, you go back to the registrar and give Ms. Jones this note. Ask her for a new class schedule and a late slip. Don’t worry. I would still be your teacher in BC Calculus. You may have your seat.”
I took my book with me and went back to my seat.
I snuck a glance at our handsome teacher. Mr. Wilson must be in his late twenties or at the most thirty. He has this charming smile that would make girls’ knees weak. He looks like a great teacher, but something in his aura says that he is something more and different. He looked so confident and dangerous even, when serious.
I smiled at myself and thought that my senior year looks promising already. I have indeed found my inspiration amidst my predicament.
