Iris arrived at school to find Mia waiting for her at the entrance. She raised an eyebrow as she approached. "Why are you waiting out here?" Iris asked, mildly puzzled. "I'm waiting for you, so we can walk in together," Mia replied with a grin. Iris rolled her eyes. "This isn't high school, Mia. You don't have to wait for me. I'm more than capable of walking myself in." Mia shrugged playfully. "I was doing it for me. We're friends now, and friends walk into school together." "Hold on, I never said we were friends," Iris shot back. Mia narrowed her eyes but kept her smile. "Yeah, but we will get there. Thou dost protest too much." Iris chuckled despite herself. "You're funny." "Come on, let's go," Mia urged, linking arms with her. Together, they headed into school, ready to face whatever the day had in store for them. As they walked, Iris glanced at Mia. "Did you choose a major yet?" she asked. Mia sighed. "No. You were right about one thing—choosing a major is harder than getting into the right college." "Tell me about it. What do you have in mind?" "My dad wanted me to major in criminal law, but I don't want to end up like him. So, I'm hoping to hold off on that for a bit." "Your dad majored in criminal law? That’s amazing," Iris said, genuinely impressed. Mia smiled. "Wait till you see him. He’s awesome." Just then, Mia’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen and answered it quickly. "Hey, Dad, what's up?" "I just wanted to tell you that you left your lucky bracelet behind. Don't you need it?" her dad’s voice came through. "Yeah, I definitely need it." "Well, I’m parked in front of your school. You can come get it." "Sure, Dad. Thanks." After the short call, Mia slipped her phone back into her pocket. "That was quick," Iris commented. Mia nodded. "My dad brought my lucky bracelet. He’s waiting out front. Want to come meet him? I can introduce you." Iris shook her head, immediately uncomfortable. "No, thanks. I’m not great at meeting parents. Maybe next time." Mia sighed. "Come on, you’ll have to meet him someday." "Just not today. I never know what to say when I meet someone's parents. You'll have to handle this one alone." Mia pouted a little but relented. "Alright. See you later." Iris watched as Mia headed off to meet her dad, leaving her alone to head to her locker. Mia reached the parking lot and spotted her father’s car. She walked over, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Hey, pumpkin. Why the long face?" her dad, Devin, asked as he rolled down the window. "It’s nothing," Mia replied, though the slight frown lingered. Devin pulled the bracelet from his pocket and handed it to her. "Here you go." Mia smiled gratefully as her dad helped clasp the bracelet around her wrist. "Thanks so much for bringing it." "You never go anywhere without this lucky charm," he noted. "Yeah, I wanted you to meet my friend Iris, but she felt awkward meeting you." Devin chuckled. "I get it. I’d be nervous too if a friend asked me to meet their parents." "It’s more than that, though," Mia said, sighing. "It’s like she keeps a distance from me, like I’m pushing too hard to be her friend." "Not everyone opens up to new relationships easily," Devin said gently. "Just be patient." Mia nodded. "Thanks, Dad." "Maybe invite her to dinner tomorrow night, and we can take it from there," Devin suggested. Mia’s eyes lit up. "Really?" "Anything for you." She leaned over and gave him a big hug. "You’re the best." Devin chuckled, patting her back. "Now get out of here. I’ll see you at home." Mia stepped out of the car, eager to share the news with Iris. She hurried back to school and found Iris waiting by the lockers, an amused look on her face. "What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be in class," Mia said, tilting her head. "I wanted to make sure no one was bothering you. I know how much you hate walking alone," Iris replied, her voice soft. Mia's eyes widened in surprise. "Were you waiting for me?" Iris nodded shyly, looking down at her shoes. "I guess you’re rubbing off on me." Mia laughed, lightly elbowing her. "I knew it! I’m wearing you down." Iris rolled her eyes, grinning. "Come on, get your books so we can go to class." As Mia gathered her things, she casually mentioned, "Oh, by the way, my dad invited you to dinner tomorrow." "I already told you I’m not good with parents," Iris started to protest. Mia held up her hand. "I know, but he suggested it, and you know better than to argue with that man." Iris sighed, giving in. "Fine, I’ll come to dinner." Mia grinned. "Great! Are you allergic to anything?" "I’m allergic to nuts," Iris said, a wry smile on her face. "And awkward around parents. But I promise to be on my best behavior." "That’s it?" Mia asked, already texting her dad the details. "Yeah. And just so you know... we are friends." Mia's grin widened. "I knew it! I wore you down." They both chuckled like they had shared an inside joke. Iris grabbed Mia’s hand and started walking toward their class. "Come on, let’s get to class before those girls over there keep staring at you like a piece of meat," Iris said, motioning with her head. Mia’s eyes widened, and she started to turn around. "Where?" Iris grabbed her arm, pulling her back. "Are you crazy? Don’t look! They’ll know we’re talking about them." "Sorry! Are you sure it’s me they’re staring at?" "Who else would they be staring at?" Iris teased, shaking her head. "Definitely not me." Mia shook her head, still amused. "Let’s just go." "I have to work after school, so I’ll see you tomorrow before dinner," Iris said as they reached the classroom door. "You’ll have to tell me everything I need to know about your dad." "Sure, I’ll text you all the details so you’ll know how to start the conversation," Mia replied with a grin. "You’re an angel," Iris said gratefully. "Don’t I know it?" Mia winked. Iris gave her a nudge. "Come on, let’s get to class." Hand in hand, Iris walked Mia to her classroom before heading off to her own.
