Kara’s inner turmoil did not go without notice. The matron in charge of the dormitory, Ms. Cavendish, could see that the girl’s distress was quite pronounced. Not only did she seem to grow more despondent each day, she slept restlessly. Sometimes she woke up screaming, arms flailing...which would set off her shock collar and make her entire body spasm uncontrollably until the collar was deactivated. These first waking moments were dreadful seconds of excruciating pain, which left her so weak that she could hardly perform her factory duties. It was recommended that her collar be deactivated once she’d fallen asleep.
