Chapter 4Alan didn’t know how long he’d been dozing in the tub when he became alert to the sound of the front door opening. His heart thundered. Why weren’t the dogs barking? Then again he couldn’t recall the dogs barking the whole time he’d been there. He scrambled out of the tub and pulled on his pajama bottoms. He had to call 911. Breathlessly, he rushed into the bedroom to grab the phone when he remembered Kincaid had told him he didn’t have a landline anymore and Alan had left his cell phone in the living room. Great, he was about to be murdered. Footsteps sounded in the front hall, and Alan, in a panic, looked around the bedroom for a weapon to use against the intruder. He rushed into the closet and spotted a tennis racket. A baseball bat would be better, but Alan guessed he didn’t
