A frightening looking nurse had told Elliot that it will take some time to examine the patient. She had also adviced him to fill in a form and make the p*****t while he waited. The nurse held a tray full of clothes and other stuff when she came out of the room. The girl's clothes whom he had hit with his car. He felt terrible seeing the blood on it.
"Can I see that?" He pointed at the card on the tray. He didn't know her name, and her card would prove to be helpful in changing that.
The nurse carelessly tossed the card to him, it hit his chest and he scowled as she left with the tray in her hand. He has to visit the owner of the hospital soon. Their staff had no respect!
It was the driving licence of the girl, her face was bare of any expression in it. Even Elliot was smiling when he had his driving licence photo taken, what happened to her to make her picture so dead?
Let's not think about death. He told himself.
He read the name next to the picture, Nigella Spencer. Twenty one. Blood type, an impressive A negative. He didn't get to the address, it felt a breach of privacy. He was already looking at her stuff, he didn't want to over do it. He stuffed the card in his jacket pocket and went to the front reception to pay her medical bills, as he should.
He filled in her name and other details from the driving licence, but when it came to the relation column Elliot hesitated. He ticked off guardian and signed under it nonchalantly. His elegant signature was too good for the low quality form. The little stroke of ink made the paper elegant.
"Here." He handed over the form and his card. The nurse swiped his card, he noticed her eyes widen ever so slightly and an eyebrow rise just a millimetre. He got his card back and didn't bother to hang out. He went back to the room Nigella was taken to and paced in front of it.
His leather shoes would probably be worn if he didn't stop, his head would be dizzy and he might make a patient in one of the other wards.
He sat on the chair and placed his head between his hands. A very depressed form. All for a girl he didn't know, but had hit with his car. Elliot was always careful while driving, and this was exactly the reason why. Before anyone could shame him for his horrible driving skills, Elliot would be drowning in guilt on his own.
However, there was something different about the girl. When he saw her face, there was nothing but calmness, a serene veil over her face. And when she had mumbled, and opened her eyes, Elliot thought he was going to combust from lack of oxygen.
Now he had a name for the face. Nigella. He didn't know what it mean, but it sounded beautiful. He smiled slightly, unconsciously. He was curious to know more about her. She was a stranger, Elliot wanted a title. A friend? Like he had ticked off in the form.
Elliot admitted he was the biggest fool in the whole entire universe. How could he think of becoming friends with the girl he hit with his car? If not sue him, Nigella will probably scream at him until he was out of her sight.
Buring in self pity, Elliot pressed the pads of his thumb to his eyes. He had some cheap wine, he wasn't even hung over, but his head ached. Just then the door opened.
"Is she okay?" Elliot asked as soon as he got a glimpse of the doctor who had come late when a patient needed him. Elliot was never going let that go. Never.
"She's okay. A slight concussion, low BP. Looks like she's be on an extremely strict diet." The doctor check off things on his notepad and tore off the paper before handing it to Elliot. "She lacks nutrition so she's on an IV."
"I'm assuming you are close family?" The doctor raised an eyebrow suspiciously. Elliot stood taller and looked the doctor in the eye.
"I'm her guardian. That's all you have to know." He answered in the same tone he would use at anyone who offended him. The tone he had used at Ricky before leaving the cheap bar.
The doctor sighed and stepped to the side and left. Elliot whirled around and held up a hand, "Wait. Can I see her?"
"She's sleeping because of the medicine. You can go in."
"When will she wake up?"
"Anytime between an hour to tomorrow morning." The doctor said and stuffed his fingers in his white coat and left.
Elliot narrowed his eyes at his retreating figure, he wondered if the Knight's had any influence on the hospital's accross New York. If it wasn't an emergency then Elliot would have taken Nigella to a prestigious hospital where patients were actually cared for. He would shift her soon if she allowed him to.
He hesitated in front of the door, he peeked in through the glass window on the door and saw her sleeping figure.
"Oh goodness." He said to himself and opened the door. Air conditioners cold air hit him in the face, he didn't realise he was sweating until little drops slipped down the side of his face, cold and frosty.
Her forehead was wrapped in thick layers of bandage, small scratches were hissed behind bandages. It was all his fault.
"Nigella." He whispered her name. He didn't expect her to open her eyes, she was sleeping. He sat next to her on a metal chair, awkwardly. He didn't know what to do. Should he hold her hand? Talk to her? Will that be too much? He had heard that talking to a patient helps in recovery. He didn't know how much of it was true, he would have tried it if he had something to say to her other than sorry.
And she was sleeping.
He was sure she couldn't hear him.
He cleared his throat. He felt useless. As a last resort, he decided to just stare at her face. His eyes flickered between her bandages forehead and her pale lips.
As he stared, he suddenly wished her eyes were open. A little glimpse of her face in his car was proving to be a drug, he wanted more. An IV needle was stuck to her hand, pale and thin. He could see the outline of her bones.
Elliot wasn't an expert when it came to health and related stuff but he understood as much that when bones start poking, it was definitely not healthy lifestyle.
The doctor had said she seemed to be on a diet. A very strict one. Was it true? He had seen girls do that and regret it later. Was she starving herself? Or was she forced to?
Too many possibilities and no answer. Elliot wanted Nigella to wake up, talk to him and tell him what was up with her. Suddenly he wanted to be a someone to her, someone who knew about her. Someone whom she could share her secrets with.
Elliot scoffed at the idea. It would be easier for him to get to Mars and built an empire there. Maybe employ a few aliens too.
He slipped his arm on the side of her bed for support. He rested his hand on his palm and kept staring. Elliot had seen beautiful girls, he had seen hot girls, he had a lot more experience with girls than all brothers compared. Yet, the etheral face of this girl threw him over the cliff and sent him to heaven.
How was he supposed to live with himself after this?
Before he knew it, his eyes had closed and his face slipped off his hand and fell on the soft bed. He stayed there and let sleep take over him.
He dreamt of absolute darkness and nothing but himself in the middle of nowhere. He was wearing his best suit and his hair was made with precision. A flash of light shone in his eyes, blinding him for a second. Painfully, he shielded his face and peeked through his fingers at the Jerk who had dared to flash light at him.
His mouth opened to pour curses but his mouth froze in an 'O' when he saw his own car, the headlights on and the driver's seat empty.
He blinked, the lights didn't bother him anymore. The wheel turned and the car lurched forward, straight towards Elliot as if he wasn't there. Elliot tried to run out of the way, he tried to move his legs but he was glued to the invisible ground. His heart threaten to burst out of his chest. It felt too real, he saw death inches away from his face. He felt the pain of his soul ripping until it was unbearable and his eyes opened.
Elliot was heaving, he wiped the sweat off his forehead and blinked several times. He was in reality. Had the accident affected him to the point that he had nightmares about it? Was is time to see a therapist? His hand seemed heavy swollen from the weight of his head on it for a long time. He moved his body into a sitting position on the chair and carefully stretched his fingers. He couldn't feel them.
"Who are you?"
Elliot stilled at the voice. He blinked once and twice and then slowly lowered his arm to see the girl on the bed. Nigella. She was awake and staring at him with curiousity. She blinked and he blinked back, and the same repeated until she rolled her eyes and raised an eyebrow.
Elliot remember she asked him a question.
"I brought you to the hospital. You don't know me."
Her blank face appeared as she said, "Thank you."
Elliot looked down as he once again was filled with guilt, she didn't know he was the one who hit her. If possible, he felt the level of guilt go higher.
"You shouldn't say thank you. It was the least I could do after what I did."
"It doesn't matter. You saved me in the end." Nigella shrugged with one shoulder and winced. Elliot hissed, was her arm broken? Doctor didn't say anything about that!
"But I put you in this condition, I am sorry!"
Her blue eyes regarded him with interest, he felt captivated by them. He couldn't look away.
"You stayed here all night?"
"I guess. I fell asleep at some point." He looked around, tearing his gaze away from her eyes. Outside the small window on the other side of the room, sun was rising up slowly. It was morning alright.
"That makes up for it then. You can go back. I'll take care of myself from here." She tried to sit up, Elliot reached out to help her but she flinched away from him before the skin of his hand touched hers. His teeth clenched and lips pursed, she sat up on her own and he kept standing.
"How can that be? I should take responsibility of my actions. I will take care of you until you get your health back." He argued, he tried not to sound dominating or agressive. He was looking for redemption.
Nigella's blank face was now morphed into a troubled one. Elliot saw her hands laced and pressing hard on each other.
"Is there a problem?"
"No, why don't you just leave?" She frowned, "I don't need your help, or your money." The last part was directed to his suit, which was creased but still gave off the scent of money and richness.
"It's for my conscience. It's the first time something like this has happened and I will not be able to rest if I didn't know how you are doing." He reasoned, "Where do you live? Any family member I can contact? They are probably going out of their mind with worry."
She looked away and mumbled something into the air, the words never reached Elliot's ears.
"Pardon?"
"I said I have no family. I am an orphan." She said strongly. Her blue eyes were now built of glaciers. Elliot let go of the topic.
"All the more reason you should let me take care of you." Even Elliot was surprised at the amount of insistence he was putting on. He shouldn't be this concerned for her, she was awake now and refused his help many times. He should have let go and gone back home for a good rest.
But here he was still pushing his luck.
"I don't understand why you are being so stubborn." She gritted.
"That makes the two of us." Elliot smiled.
"I don't care."
"I'll call the doctor. Let him decided if you need care or not." Elliot said, when he was at the door he added, "I take doctor's words very seriously. If he says you need care then I will give it to you. It won't matter if you want it or not."
He took small steps backwards, slowly a knowing grin spread over his lips. He would get his way, he knew it and with his confidence he wanted her to know it as well.
It was necessary he took responsibility, he meant to say with his eyes, she didn't seem to get the message. He would be a disgrace to his blood if he let her go when he has options, she didn't understand. He didn't blame her, most of the world failed to understand the masterpiece that he was.
"I'll be back." He turned his back on her.
