“Who was that?” Jennie asked her and Devi sighed as she replied “Just someone. I need to be somewhere” she told her friend then her eyes moved to the food that was being made. She wondered if she will be back in time to eat or if it will go to waste. Taking her jacket and car keys, Devina headed outside without telling Jennie where she was off to at the time of the night.
She drove for about an hour and half and slowly, the streets began to get silent with no one in sight and darker. There was a creepy feeling that formed in her heart when she finally reached the town where she used to live.
As she continued to drive inside, she found her surroundings a bit too quiet. Only the sounds of cricket filled her ears as she stopped in front an old building. Davina sat in her car as she stared at that building feeling conflicted as memories flooded in her head. She didn’t want to think about all the things her grandmother made her do in this house. All the sick practices in form of rituals her grandmother had forced her to do. She was just ten yet once, her grandmother had made her rip apart a chicken’s head with her bare hands. Everyone thought of her grandmother as a possessed being and most stays away from her because of the weird words she utters at times. Yet, Devi wondered if she was truly possessed or… she sighed, trying to make up her mind as she looked out through the windows one more time before she unlocked her doors and stepped out.
The cold breeze brushed against her skin making her shiver a little as she quickly made her way inside after hesitating for a minute. Putting a key through the hole of the door, she opened it and was greeted by darkness and the smell of dust which she inhaled and made her cough.
First, she didn’t even know why she was here. She doubted there was anything important to take from this old house. Even if there was, she still wouldn’t touch any let alone take it with her so once again, she wondered why she was really here.
It had been ten years since she left. She was fifteen and she had been traumatized by her grandmother’s practices and ran away from home. Even when her grandmother died three years ago, she heard about it yet didn’t come back once. She knew all the nasty things the people around will say about her and she didn’t really care nor did she feel guilty but coming back here, she wondered if she had just been waiting for a reason to and perhaps that caller gave her one and look… she came running.
Waving her hands in the air to get rid of the dust, Devi moved in deeper into the house. It seemed like the whole town was out of power and it was pretty dark here so she took out her phone and turned on the lights to have a proper look. Everything was like she remembered except for the dust coating it. Even if she wanted to take something there was nothing to take.
Devi suddenly heard a creaking sound behind her and she whirled around in fright only to be met with nothing but the darkness.
She frowned. What was that? She could swear she heard the sound but where did it come from then?
Walking in the direction she had heard it, she found a door which was left a bit open making her wonder if she was not alone. The thought made her stomach sink with fear and perhaps, she should have thought of returning back to her car and just leaving but she couldn’t. Curiosity brimmed in her eyes when she stared at this door which was left ajar as if it was inviting her, waiting for her to come in. It was as if it opened for her.
She remembered this particular door, this room, she had never entered it in the entire years she spent here. As a child, she used to wander around everywhere but this one room was a place her grandmother never let her entered. She wondered what secrets lies in there. Why was it fiercely protected from her like that by the old woman? She doubted it was anything really important. The old woman was insane, no doubt about this because she had seen what she used to do. She had seen more than any other person would.
Stretching her hands to push the door open, Devi was greeted with the sight of a staircase that led underground. She didn’t hesitate in taking it but her heart was pounding fast in her chest at the thought that something might jump at her. Besides, she didn’t still know how the door creaked and opened. It couldn’t have been on its own now, could it?
Like the other places, this place was dark and her torch was the only source of light but even that wasn’t enough. Devi walked between the narrow mud walls wondering when this was even built. She saw cobwebs hanging around and the sound of rats as they squeaked and moved about.
She only stopped when she reached the front of another door. The door was red and strangely, Devi had a bad feeling about opening it. She felt like she should not but then again, what could possibly happen?
She pushed the door open and stepped inside while making sure the door was left open as it made her feel a bit somewhat safe? But the moment she let go of the door, it closed on its own and the light on her phone went out immediately and she was greeted with darkness which made her panic. She tapped the phone a few times only to find out it was dead. She was confused because she was sure the phone was not low on battery so how could it suddenly turn dead?
Devi felt a bad feeling settle in the pit of her stomach. She quickly tried to go back the way she had entered and searched for the door with her hands but all her hands touched were the cold walls. There was no door!
She suddenly felt a cold breeze brush against her skin. As if someone had passed by her but how? She was alone and she doubt there were any windows.
“Hello” she called taking a step forward blindly but her voice only echoed back at her. She quickly realized how wrong it was for her to come in here as she started to hear strange whispers. Words she could not decipher sounded next to her ears in a breathy voice yet when she swings her hands in an attempt to touch whoever was whispering, she found nothing and this made a chill run down her spine.
What was happening right now? And where was she?
