For the rest of the day, Devi was distracted. She couldn’t stop thinking about the mark that suddenly appeared on her neck. What sorcery was that? She wondered what Jennie would say if she told her what had been going on with her lately. Perhaps she will laugh it off and tell her to quit the joke. And yeah, everything’d sound like a joke.
It was already getting dark and time for her to get off work. She wanted to check on her patients one more time before retiring for the day so she went to the ward.
When she came back out, she couldn’t help feeling eyes on her. It was as if she was being watched but no matter how she looked, she found no one. She sighed, going back into her office and changing her clothes. She let her hair fall down her shoulders and just when she was about to take a step out, she froze, feeling that familiar cool breeze out of nowhere hit her again and then she was pulled into this other space where she didn’t want to be.
Oh no!
Devi could see them again. Beasts! She stood at the side watching the bloody fight that was going on. Perhaps, she should be used to it considering how many times she had seen this but she didn’t know why each time, she felt the same fear, watching the gore.
The way their fangs teared into each other. Cutting a piece of flesh with it and the way they plunged their claws into each other. The sight made her cringe, making her wish for this to end as quick as possible but at the same time, her eyes searched for someone at the other side. The Red-haired man.
If this was real which she was starting to believe then she could tell that the beast couldn’t see her but that man… She was sure he could see her. He had met her eyes…
Her eyes finally found him. At the other side with the beasts between them. She spotted that red striking hair that stood out even in the darkness and it felt as if he had also looked for her as his eyes met hers immediately and he held her gaze.
Devi almost felt her breath leave her. She couldn’t see his face fully but she could see his eyes. So lifeless and cold and… empty. And as if time was up, she blinked only to find herself back at the entrance of her office. She took in a breath as she closed her eyes. At this rate, she might really go insane. What in-God’s name is happening to her?
Devi left the hospital and was going to drive home but she couldn’t shake off that feeling of someone following her or perhaps they were just looking. Either way, she felt like she didn’t want to be alone.
After getting into her car, she called Jennie. It rang for a long while before the call was answered and what greeted her ears first was the loud music playing from the background.
“Hey Devi” came Jennie’s voice and she sounded quite drunk. Devi’s brows furrowed and she shook her head, letting out a frustrated sigh.
“You’re drunk” Devi told her.
“Hey d-don’t say that I’m drunk cause I’m not. This... t-this...” her voice broke in between words and Devi sighed again.
“Where are you at?” she asked. Jennie told her where she was and Devi quickly drove there.
She arrived in front of a club glowing with colorful neon lights and didn’t hesitate before going in. She had been here before and for the same reason.
She got inside and tried to maneuver her way through the crowd. The excited screams, the loud music and the way everyone danced wildly. No wonder Jennie liked to come here. It was exactly how she liked parties to be. Devi tried to reach Jennie’s phone but it couldn’t get through and she had to search carefully before she finally found her in the midst of some guys who were holding her. Devi recognized one of those guys and she quickly went over and held Jennie who was wobbling on her feet’s as she said some words.
“You… Asshole! I hate you” Devi heard these words from her and knew it was directed at Dave. She looked at him with sorry eyes and the man gave her a nod as she started to drag Jennie away from there before she does something more embarrassing.
“You… I’ll catch that b***h and I will-” Devi used her hands to cover her mouth, preventing her from speaking no more as they went to a secluded part of the club. Devina let her sit on the couch and she sat next to her wanting to relax a bit before they leave. Taking a drink from the waiter who was passing by, she took a sip and dropped the glass then closed her eyes.
Devi opened her eyes sharply again when that familiar feeling of being watched overcame her. She looked around again and this time, she could see them. Not just one but many pairs of eyes glancing at her. None of them even looked away when she caught them and this made her to question why? Why were they looking at her? Did she have something on her face? She knew it was not that simple but she also wanted to brush it off. They had their eyes to look anyway.
...
Inside the club, at a corner which was opposite to where Devi was sitting. Three people were gathered there. The one at the center was dressed fully in black and just like the others, his gaze was particularly fixed on the girl sitting across them all alone apart from the drunk girl by her side.
“She’s the one. I can smell that scent from here” the one next to the black dressed man said. His eyes turning exciting as if he had just set his eyes on a truck of gold.
The black dressed man tilted his head a bit to the side, a smirk lingering on his lips as he took a sip from the glass in his hands. His eyes stared at the dark-haired girl and he wondered if it was really her. Why was she only showing up now? Or perhaps, she just moved in to this town.
Only one way to find out.
He nodded towards the man at his left and he understood immediately as he stood up and slowly made his way towards the girl who seemed to be enjoying her time alone.
