12 “What’s the black brier?” I inquired as I caught up to Shade. No small feat considering his strides were long and his pace quick. “The heart of the forest where the most ancient of the plants reside,” he explained. I arched an eyebrow. “And that’s a bad thing because why?” “Some of the plants have evolved from simple flora into predators.” I winced. “So it’s like a small forest of Venus fly traps?” It was his turn to lift a brow. “I’m not familiar with that plant.” “It’s a small plant that has a big mouth and-” “Watch out!” Shade pushed me out of the way.
