Chapter Sixteen
Feather had never felt so lonely on the track. He could not count the number of times that he had crossed Broad Plain, quartering it from every angle on his many trips between the Storm on their annual circuit and the fixed point of the Settlement, where for many years, a great portion of his heart had pulled him toward his beloved Jana and their precious daughter Freya. Now Jana, miraculously, was out of the Settlement and living among the makers of Newkeep Port, and Freya was forging her own path, sometimes with the Storm and now at the ravine. These days, he found himself following even more varied lines across the territory he had known well for many seasons. Breaking fresh ground was nothing new. Yet in all those journeys, he had never felt so alone as now.
