Chapter 18: No Longer Coupled I kept to myself for the next week. What else was I to do? And Pax Raulton kept to himself, avoiding me at all costs. It was perfectly fine with me for the time being, since I knew he needed to calm down after our confrontation. Our lives became separate at Riding Ranch, which happened easily, in my opinion. There was enough acreage for two men to lose themselves in. He had his work and I had mine. In truth, I spent most of my time in the barn with the Palominos. I brushed them, checked the beauties from head to tail, watched them with care, and rode them the way they were intended to be ridden through Pax’s vast ranch. I loved the horses with all my heart, but I seemed to have loved Pax even more. Not a moment passed without thoughts of the cowboy drifting
