Chapter 11
Monday morning. Scarlet was all set ready for her first day at school. She was in jeans and a man’s shirt, her most unrevealing outfit to date. She straightened her red hair and put on some lipstick and a cheek tint to put some pigment on her pale skin. She didn’t make any effort to look unique.
She went to the kitchen to fix herself breakfast when Xavier walked in. He was dressed up nicely. Scarlet didn’t want to admit it, but he smelled like heaven. His scent always draws her to him, but the moment he opens his mouth it all gets back to square one.
Xavier grabbed an apple from the fridge, his brows raised when he checked out Scarlet, “Are you wearing my clothes?” He inquired.
Scarlet put her cup of coffee down and made a thinking face, “Oh this?” She pointed towards her shirt. “Yep, you know I got too lazy to unpack my things at 1 in the morning!” She snapped. “Because someone just called their daddy to complain about me,”
Xavier scoffed, “Oh please, for f**k sake I was not the one behind this. Stop acting like you don’t know how far our parents can go to stick us together till eternity,” Xavier shivered and Scarlet rolled her eyes at him.
“By the way, you look horrendous in this outfit,” he commented.
Scarlet faked a smile, “Thank you for hyping me up always,” She took her last sip of coffee and rinsed her mouth in the sink before grabbing her bag and waiting patiently for Sal to arrive.
Xavier took a bite and scanned Scarlet from head to toe, “On a serious note, don’t you want to impress any guy in this world?” He asked. His question made Scarlet look at him.
“What?” She asked.
Xavier put the apple on the table, pulled out some tissues to wipe his hands, and covered the half-eaten apple with them. “You know. . . our parents aren’t around. No one in this school or this world knows about our deal. No rules, regulations, or people spying on our actions and every move. Don’t you want to get a little exposure? Who knows you might find someone you like,” he wiggled his brows at her.
Scarlet's eyes squinted, her lips curved in a confused smile, “Did you hit your head somewhere last night? Are you having a concussion?” She asked and Xavier looked at her with bored eyes.
“Whatever,” he got up from his seat and walked in her direction.
“Why? Are you planning to?” She asked him. He smirked and bent a little, his hands placed on the armchairs of the seat she was sitting on. His eyes scanned hers, her cheekbones, her luscious lips. Scarlet couldn’t help but notice his features too. She could understand why he got the pretty privilege back in the pack.
“I don’t know. . . maybe,” He shrugged his shoulders. “Will you tell the Alphas?” He asked in a low velvety tone.
Scarlet made a thinking face, her lips curved in a sneer, “I can and I know it could get you in trouble,” She said, her eyes met his, “but you know what? You’re right. We should live our lives a little. Let’s do what our heart desires and forget about the whole deal our parents made. You and I are free from any deal and obligation in this world. What happens in this world stays in the human world.”
There was a loud knock on the door grabbing their attention, “Wow and you say, you guys don’t have any spark,” Xavier and Scarlet’s eyes widened when they heard a familiar voice interrupting their chat.
It was Sal standing at the door, the key of the main door jingling in his hands as he looked at both of them with an amused expression. Scarlet put her hands on Xavier's chest and pushed him away from her as hard as she could.
“You guys were totally flirting!” he said in an ecstatic tone as he walked closer to them.
“No, we were not!” both of them said simultaneously. Their eyes met for a second— both of them made a puking face before looking away.
Sal rolled his eyes, “Yeah sure. Now come on, we are getting late to catch the bus on time,” His thumb pointed towards the door.
Xavier's brows frowned, “Why are we catching the school bus? Where is the car that is going to drop us at school?” He asked.
“It is my deepest concern to inform you, Alpha, that we don’t own a car yet, so yes, the only transport that can take us to school is the bus. Please give you the honor of joining us,” He bowed a little and Scarlet couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“You’re forgetting your position again, Patel,” Xavier said in a threatening tone.
Scarlet came in between, both of her arms on her sides in a defensive manner, “Didn’t you just suggest getting a little flexible in the human world?” her eyes met Xaviers.
Sal chimed in, “That makes me remember to warn you guys to not talk about our world under any circumstances. We don’t want weird rumors about us. And Xavier, I know that you are our Alpha but you haven't been entitled yet, so it would be better if you refrained from calling yourself an Alpha and bossing me around. I have a reputation here that I need to maintain.”
Xavier disliked the confidence in Sal’s voice. He was not used to this attitude. He felt like both of them were ganging up against him. “If that’s the case, then no one will meddle in anyone’s business anymore, no matter what the other person is doing,” he said, and Sal shrugged his shoulders carelessly.
“Fine by me,” said Sal,
“Me too,” Scarlet uttered.
The three of them made a pact, grabbed their bags, and left to catch the bus. Scarlet and Sal were sitting together on the two-seaters. Behind them, Xavier was sitting uncomfortably. He disliked the new air and scents around him. The unfamiliarity and the way people were ogling at him made him slightly comfortable. He could hear Scarlet’s loud laugh, he didn’t know she could laugh like that. Sal was introducing her to everyone and she was blending in between them without breaking a sweat. They didn’t bother to glance at Xavier during the ride.
“So you’re Sal’s cousin?” A girl asked Xavier.
Xavier wanted to answer politely but a growl came out of his mouth, making the other girl and the others around him surprised. Scarlet and Sal also turned, and their eyes widened at Xavier.
“No, we’re not. They are,” He pointed his finger at Sal and Scarlet. “I’m someone they know,” He shrugged his shoulders, acting all cool. Sal looked at him with rage and screamed with his eyes, "You didn't just do that."
“Really? Because I almost assumed that Scarlet was going to be Sal’s potential girlfriend, looking at the chemistry they both have,” The students around them commented. Scarlet glared at Xavier, to whom he passed her an innocent smile.
.
.
.
Scarlet grabbed him by his collar and shoved him into her locker when no one was around. Xavier was surprised to feel this extreme force from her. She was six inches shorter than him and too petite to shove him like that. Has she been training lately?
“What was that?” her voice getting deep all of a sudden.
Xavier got out of the trace and removed Scarlet’s hold from his shirt. He intimidated her with his height and asked, “What?”
“You said we'd stay out of each other’s business. Did you forget that we need to be low-key? Why did you growl? If we could enter the human world, then surely the rogues and the Night Walkers would too. Their job is to find and kill us off.”
Xavier scoffed and fixed his jacket, “As they can,”
Scarlet ran her hand through her hair, “They can, Xavier. The Alphas told us to do one thing: protect ourselves from harm. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be a disappointment and why did you say that Sal and I are cousins when the plan was different,” She asked.
Xavier raised his brow at her, his tone got hard and sharp, “I was just messing a little with you both. Why are you so bothered about this? Have you finally decided to go out and date him? Is this why you were so intrigued by the idea from this morning? What stays in this world stays in this world. Bullshit!” He cornered her between him and the wall. The bell rang and students began to gather in the hall.
Scarlet pushed him away for the second time today. Xavier noticed her eyes glinting. Did he imagine that her iris was turning red? “You, Xavier Monroe, can never change. You haven’t learned your lesson from the last time you dragged Sal into this. Last time it was our parents that dealt with you, but this time it’s me, so I'd suggest you take every step carefully,” Xavier's brows frowned when hearing the difference in her voice. Usually, her threats were hollow and meaningless, but this was the first time he felt like she meant those words.
She walked off from there not before passing a hard glare in his direction. Xavier's jaw clenched, and he punched a hole in the locker room wall. He was feeling furious about this sudden change in his life. He couldn’t understand what was going on around him or with him. Nothing seemed normal to him anymore. It hadn’t been a week yet, and he felt suffocated already.
