(Camila's POV)
As I continued to read the journals, the next few were mom's. I realized that. Mom had had a one-night stand with some guy and she could never find him after that. She also mentioned how she met Max. They, like Josh and I, met when they were young. They became good friends until they were grown, but Mom was on the run with me. So she lost contact with him, until Natalia aka Amy came looking for her. Natalia had thought that I was Max's daughter, and was leaving Max if that was the case. Mom, promised her up and down that I wasn't. Somehow they became friends, but Mom called Max to let him know where his mate was. My guess she found the information in Natalia's things.
She then mentions that she saw the man again. Her heart broke when she saw him with another woman. Again, his name was also Samuel. What were the chances of that? She never tried to talk to him, until she saw him talking to me one time. After that, she was making a plan for us to leave again.
I was so frustrated. Who was this guy? I don't remember a man ever coming up to me out of the blue, trying to get to know me and such. Something must've happened because we stayed after that entry she wrote.
"You're extremely quiet, it must be a good read." I heard Josh say and he pushed himself to sit up. He didn't wince or anything but I could tell it did hurt him.
I put the journal down and went to sit next to him. All these details and such ran through my head.
"Someone brought those journals in earlier. They're my grandmother's and Mom's journals."
"Really, What have you found out?"
I went over the details of my grandmother's story first, and apologized for it. Then Mom's story and how his Mom thought my mom had been involved with Max.
He broke the silence by playing an imaginary bango and singing sweet home Alabama. I laughed and he smiled.
"So many things had our paths crossing, I honestly wonder if we were destined to find each other."
He took my hand in his, then put it up to his lips and kissed it, not taking his eyes off me.
"We were, that's what mates are, love."
That sent a little shiver up my body. I looked away but couldn't help seeing the heat in his eyes. He tugged me closer and I closed the distance between us. We were just inches from each other when the door flew open.
"Camila! It's snowing outside!" we both turned as little Bret ran in and hugged, then wanted to tug me to the window. I followed him and looked outside. It was lightly snowing outdoors.
"It reminds me of a snow globe." he said, his body relaxing and I knew he was lost in his own little world.
"I'm so sorry Camila, Bret, come on, your brother is looking for you!" said Shawna said, pulling Bret away and out the door.
There was an awkward silence, then I chuckled. Then looked back at Josh.
"I'll go get some food."
"I need some clothes , and I need to try to get up," he said.
"I thought you guys didn't mind walking around in the nude."
"Not when it's in my own house, but here too many unexpected things can happen."
I grinned but agreed and went to grab him some clothes. When I got back down, he was already with his legs over the side.
"Hey, not so fast!"
"That's why I haven't moved." he said, his face a little sour looking.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just feel my insides churning."
He needed food, so I helped him with his clothes. That gave him an excuse to touch or hug me. After a while, he rested his head on my stomach, and I laughed because my own insides were churning with hunger too. He looked up at me.
"Ready?" I asked and braced myself. He just nodded and we slowly got him to his feet. He'd been in bed for three days with no real food, so he was a little shaky, and probably a little lightheaded. We carefully moved out of the room and to the kitchen. I sat him at the table, and looked around.
"I guess Shawna stepped away. I'll make food!" I said, and got to work. I made a mix of things. Chicken tacos, some sausage and eggs, hushbrowns and French toast. I sat everything in front of him. He just stared at me for a minute.
"What?"
"You still remember all my favorite dishes," he said with a smile.
"They are?" I said, confused.
"Yeah, and they look just the way your mom made them too."
I had to smile with pride. I sat down and we both dug in. At some point, he started feeding me and I him. I was laughing and talking as we ate.
"You two need to get a room." I heard Bracks say with disgust on his face, but he came over and took the last sausage from a plate.
"Hey!" I said as he walked away. He just grinned and headed up stairs. Shawna and he crossed paths and she playfully smacked his arm, and shook her head and she came down stairs.
"That man, I swear. I'm sorry I always clean up after breakfast. I looked into what you asked Camila and I think everything is ready."
"Okay, I can try it and see if this will help us find her."
She nodded and went to get things ready.
"What's going on?" Josh asked me.
"I have an idea how to find your mom, and asked Shawna to help me with a spell."
"Huh, a witch and a seer, but are you sure it's safe? It's not going to hurt you, is it?"
"I'm hoping not, but you never know."
I looked at the time. It was a little over one in the afternoon. This was better a little later. So Josh and I finished eating, pretty soon he was feeling a lot better, and we walked around the house to get him moving again. I couldn't help but notice and envy the werewolf form. I found myself thinking how different my life would've been if Grandma had married a werewolf, Mom would've been...
"Hey, what's on your mind?" Josh asked me, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"You were born a werewolf, right?"
"Yeah."
"But your mom is a witch?"
"She was raised by a coven, but she doesn't have powers in any way."
I sat there letting that sink in, so they were married off because they didn't give their covens value or power.
"Why?" he asked, taking my hand.
"I was just thinking that life wasn't easy for my grandma and the only reason she ran away was because she didn't have power."
Josh looked at me, and pulled me into his arms. Holding me.
"Don't let the past control your life, love. What's done is done."
"I just want to understand. Because someone is holding on to the past harder than anything. Why do you think those honor killings happened?"
He looked at me and nodded. He wanted to understand why I was so worried, but I knew that as one that wasn't the target, he wouldn't fully understand, but I appreciated that he was trying. A while later, both my aunts walked into the house.Amelia came over and gave me a hug and asked Josh how he was doing. My great aunt, on the other hand, was cold and distant.
"What's going on?" I asked Amelia, who shrugged.
"I haven't a clue she's been getting worse and worse since you two got married."
I looked at Amelia. Wasn't the marriage pushed by my great aunt. What is happening now? I looked at Josh, who nodded and I got up and walked over to my great aunt.
"Tia, how are you?" I asked her in Spanish. She took a deep breath and plastered a smile on her face.
"I'm fine, but the stress of hiding is getting to me," she said in English, and took a seat.
"I thought Max sent Logan to guard you." said Josh, looking at Amelia, then my great aunt.
"He did and he is, but I think his...."
"The boy is unwell, he carries too much pain in his heart and has not dealt with it properly!" said my great aunt, not bothering to lower her voice.
Josh looked at me and I sighed. Logan didn't want to ask for help but he needed it. If not for him, for his little brother.
"How's Bret doing with him?" I asked.
"He hasn't come to visit, he doesn't even mention Bret when he's with us." said Amelia sadly. Josh sighed but understood what needed to be done.
"I'll deal with it," he said after a moment. At that moment, Shawna came into the living room looking excited. Max and Bracks were following close behind her.
"Everything is ready!" she said excitedly.
"I still need something of hers, something very dear to her."
Shawna sat there thinking for a bit, but Max was looking at Josh.
"I'm not sure that would work." I said, but Shawna shook her head.
"Yes, it will, it would work better actually. He's blood related and he's our connection to her."
"What's going on? What's this for?" My great aunt asked sternly.
"I thought of a way to find Amy or I mean Natalia."
"What do I need to do?" asked Josh before my aunt responded.
"Just a little blood and then, however, Camila needs you."
"Camila, I don't think this is a good..."
"It's risky, but I've tried my power alone and it's not doing anything, I need something stronger." I said, which silenced my great aunt.
I looked back at Shawna, who was shaking with excitement and nodded. She smiled and headed for the door to go outside.
"Hey." Josh pulled me close to him. He was worried, " this won't hurt you will it?"
"Honestly, I have no idea if it will even work, but we need to find your mom."
"Mila..."
"I'll be fine, just trust me."
He looked ready to protest further but I actually dared give him a peck on the lips, which stunned him into silence. I smiled and pulled him outside, following the others.
It was still snowing lightly but it was still coming. The moon made a strange shine on the snow, making it look even more beautiful. We all surrounded the fire pit, which was empty of everything but some logs.
"Ready?" Shawna asked both of us. I nodded. She then looked at Max, who nodded once and she started. The pit roared with flame suddenly, as she chanted she sprinkled herbs and essence into the pit. That's when I could suddenly see all the spirits around us. I was suddenly getting very nervous. Then, as she chanted, she came to Josh, took his hand and made a cut across his hands and pulled him toward the fire. A few drops of his blood fell into the flames and the fire turned into a blue color. The door I was asking for opened.
"Camila." she then pointed to me. I looked at Josh and he took my hand again. The pull was so fast, I didn't know how I was still standing. My spirit left my body and was pulled through the spirit world. Josh was my anchor, but my spirit was being called. Kinda like a phone call. I was flying through the air, forest, buildings, until I came to a stop. I walked around and could feel the pull, Josh's blood was leading me to his Mom. It was a warehouse, it was in the middle of nowhere, something a rancher would have to keep farming equipment. From what I could see, it was about two hours away. I walked inside and at first it looked like a normal storage shelter, but then I realized there was an underground. I walked through the door, and followed the halls underground. Perfect halls were leading me to rooms. I looked inside them and felt my inside twist in horror. There were women, chained and, from what I could see, beaten. I kept going and soon came to the room. My ears were ringing. As I looked into the small window,
"Natalia."
