Chapter 9

938 Words
I was standing outside Mytheresa feeling a sense of pride and made my way inside. I asked the reception about the new employees and she told me to go on twenty second floor. I waited for the elevator outside. The door opened with a ‘ping’ sound. I went in and pressed the button for 22nd floor. Suddenly I heard someone scream, “Stop, stop, please stop the lift.” I saw someone running in my direction. I placed my hand on the doors stopping it from closing. “Thanks.” The young man who was running says to me after entering the lift. The door closes and the lift starts to move.   He looked at me curiously as asked, “Are you new here?”   “Yes I am.”   “I thought so”   “Is that so obvious?”   “Well not exactly, it’s just that I would have definitely remembered a face like yours if seen here before.”   Ahhh! Wow, encountered typical flirting and that too on the first day. I was still looking at him and not saying anything and I don’t know what my expression was like but he looked guilty and said, “I’m sorry if you felt offended in anyway. Sorry. Just so you know I don’t hit on girls randomly. I just don’t know why I said that.”   Now I felt bad for him and anyways it was not that offensive. So I didn’t put him in any misery,   “No it’s okay. It was not offensive. I would rather take it as a compliment.”   This remark lighted up his eyes. He looked at the button which was pressed by me and said, “Oh look we are on the same floor. So you must be the new assistant designer. Hi I’m Matt Donavan and you are….?”   “I’m Rachel Davis. Nice to meet you. So you are also an assistant designer here?”   “Yes, we are in total 4 assistant designers who are under two major designers of Mytheresa. We are divided into two teams which consists one major designer and their two assistants.”   That’s when the elevator reached the destined floor and the doors opened. We both walked out and he showed me to the designer whom I was assisted under. The name plate hung outside the office read the name Britney Smith. Matt knocked on the door and we heard, “Come in” from inside. We both walked inside the office and I saw my new boss. She was a middle aged lady with elegance written all over her face. She a wearing a brown pant suit with white shirt inside and her hair were tied in a neat bun. She was sitting across the room and there were numerous materials of fabric scatter around on the table. She looked up and saw me. Before any of us can speak she told Matt to go out and do his work. Wow that was kinda harsh. I stood there speechless. She looked at me and said, “Come and sit here. I need your opinion on this.”   Well this was fast. No ‘what is your name?’ No ‘how much experience do you have?’ She seems like a workaholic person. I kept my handbag on the side floor of my chair and began to examine the fabrics. Then she showed me a sketch and design of the dress which she was making and I gave my honest opinions to her. She did not look impressed but she was convinced by my explanation. Good start at work Rachel. Then she told me to go out and take the seat opposite to Matt as he and I would be sharing an office. It was the same for the other two assistants. Maybe she was testing my knowledge by asking me those questions. I went back and arranged my things in my new office. Matt and I got along very well. He is a very peculiar and funny guy. I like such funny people. During lunch we both went to the canteen and he introduced me to other colleagues of the company. And the day went so on.   I came back home till 8 ‘o’ clock and literally had no energy to make dinner so I ordered pizza and went to take a bath. After finishing I went to the kitchen took out some orange juice in a glass and started to drink it. The doorbell rang and I figured it would be the pizza guy. I took my purse to pay the delivery guy and took the pizza, sat in front of TV and ate in silence flipping the channels. Suddenly I saw a familiar face and I stopped. I looked closely and it was some business channel. Austin was standing at a podium, his grey eyes intense as he delivers his speech and the crowd listening to him quietly. I realized I haven’t thought about him or that night. But why should I? Ugh! What is wrong with me? I hate this arrogant guy.   Frustrated at him and mostly myself I switched off the TV. I put the rest of the pizza in the refrigerator and went upstairs to the bedroom to sleep. The next two weeks went in a blur. I bought a Mercedes Benz A-Class which was the cheapest in the store for the time being. It made running errands easy. Office was good and everyone was nice. My boss was totally buying my opinion and we completed two major projects successfully. My parents tried to call me which I royally ignored. I was not in a mood to talk to them now. I won’t be able to accept the fact that they wouldn’t even ask me before giving my hand to some random guy to marry.
