"It's not possible! You definitely didn't catch this!" Leo hissed through clenched teeth.
"Right, right, it wasn't me—a pirate caught it and then gave it to me," I responded dismissively, my tone thick with sarcasm.
Stella remained silent, but her expression showed a newfound respect for me, particularly because I had managed to catch fish yesterday and now a wild chicken today.
"Stella," I suddenly said, throwing the wild chicken in front of her with a cold directive, "You cook it."
Stella's eyes widened as she pointed to herself and asked, "Are you willing to share it with me?"
I nodded, and a smile quickly spread across her face, replacing the previous tension.
I had little regard for Quinn and Leo, but I recognized that Stella, despite not being the sharpest, had a good heart. This wild chicken was perhaps my last test of her goodwill—if she let me down again, I wouldn't go easy on her anymore.
Stella took the chicken and started to cook it carefully.
On the other side, Quinn and Leo watched, swallowing hard, though their pride forced them to show disinterest.
Disinterested in engaging with such contemptible figures, I stood up and made my way back to the woods. Now, with a water source secured, I needed to create more containers for storage.
As I neared the stream, I suddenly caught the sound of a woman's voice from behind the bushes! 'Could there be other survivors?'
Filled with excitement, I hurried over and soon saw a woman in her mid-twenties by the stream, humming as she washed her lovely face. She seemed freshly awakened, her beauty enhanced by the lazy elegance of the morning sun, the flowing water, and the surrounding jungle. What a breathtaking scene!
I was momentarily stunned.
She quickly noticed me, and her face brightened with surprise. She rushed towards me.
Before I could react, she embraced me tightly, exclaiming with relief, "Oh, thank goodness! It's so wonderful to see someone else is alive! I thought everyone else was dead!"
Her closeness caused my heart to race uncontrollably, and I momentarily forgot to pull away.
After a brief moment, she finally released me.
After the rush of excitement, we looked at each other and felt an awkward silence between us.
A blush colored her cheeks as she playfully scolded, "You naughty boy, don't think too much—I was just very happy!"
Had Stella been in her place, she might have taken the opportunity to accuse me of inappropriate behavior.
The woman in front of me switched to a gentle smile and brushed her hair away from her forehead. "My name is Mandy Truman, and you can call me Mandy. What's your name?"
"I'm Zack Johnson. I've been on this island for almost two days now. How about you? How did you survive?" I was curious. Mandy seemed to be doing quite well these past few days, which wasn't easy for a woman on this island.
Earlier, Leo and Quinn had looked as miserable as two stray dogs.
"I've been hiding in a cave in the woods these past two days. The cave is quite safe. If you don't mind, you can stay with me!" Mandy invited me directly.
Hearing this, I was immediately tempted. The temporary shelter I built by the beach wasn't very safe. If the tide came in, my shelter would be flooded.
Before I could respond, Mandy grabbed my hand and led me into the woods. As we walked, she pointed to the wild fruits on the surrounding trees, telling me which were poisonous and which were safe to eat.
Mandy was honest with me, so I told her about the bamboo juice that could be used as a water source and planned to take her to the beach for some roasted wild chicken later.
Soon, Mandy's cave appeared before me. The cave was on the side of a small hill, and although it wasn't very big inside, it could easily accommodate three or four people. The cave was very clean and quite dry, making it suitable for living.
"Mandy, come on. I'll take you to my camp. I have some extra clothes you can wear. It's getting colder, and your tattered clothes won't keep you warm."
Mandy was very happy and followed me out of the woods. I took her back to the beach camp, ready to introduce her to everyone.
However, as soon as I got close to the camp, I was furious. I almost wanted to kill that bastard Leo on the spot.
The wild chicken that Stella was supposed to roast was already in Leo's hands, and it was completely burnt, emitting plumes of black smoke. It was inedible.
Leo sat carelessly by the campfire, stretching out one leg like a pig, with some oil stains still on his mouth. He had probably found a tiny bit of edible meat from the burnt chicken and stuffed it into his mouth.
I stormed over and kicked him hard. "What the h*ll happened? Who ruined this chicken?"
Leo clutched his leg in pain and glared at me. "You're getting more and more arrogant, you worthless piece of sh*t! So what if I ate your chicken?"
I sneered, my anger boiling over. I couldn't hold it in any longer and grabbed him by the collar.
"I've had enough of you! This time, I'm not letting you off!"
Leo slapped my hand away. There was a flash of malice in his eyes. He had been holding a grudge ever since I beat him up before.
"You brought this upon yourself, you broke-a** loser! You just caught a wild chicken and acted like you're somebody. Today, I'm going to teach you a lesson!" Leo sneered arrogantly, cracking his neck and wrists.
I didn't waste words with this a**hole and kicked his knee hard. Leo couldn't stay on his feet and fell to the ground, clutching his knee and screaming in pain.
"You little b*stard, you ambushed me!" Leo yelled.
Ignoring his words, I ran over and grabbed his collar again, aiming punches at his face. Each punch landed solidly.
Leo couldn't even speak from the beating, gasping for air. His eyes quickly turned black and blue, and his nose started bleeding, covering his face in blood.
He kept cursing me incoherently.
Stella rushed over. "Zack! Are you crazy?"
Quinn threw herself on top of Leo, crying, "Stop! Don't hit him!"
"Zack! I was so wrong about you. How could you hit someone again? Stop it now!" Stella glared at me, prying my hand off Leo's collar.
I let go, disgusted, my gaze turning icy towards Stella.
The two women helped Leo up. "Are you okay, Leo?"
"I'm fine. Don't blame him, it was my fault. I burned the chicken, and that's why he got mad." Leo sighed, looking like he was accepting the blame. His "pitiful" appearance immediately ignited the women's anger, and they glared at me indignantly.
"Look at Leo, and then look at yourself, Zack. Don't you feel ashamed? It's just a wild chicken! Is this how you treat your companions? Do you think you're so great just because you can hunt? I don't believe for a second that we can't survive without you! Rescue will come soon!" Stella glared at me, scolding.
"Did you give him the chicken?" I asked coldly, struggling to hold back my anger.
"Leo offered to help me roast the meat. It was just a mistake that it got burnt. Did you really have to hit him?" Stella pointed at my nose.
"Oh, so you'll remember him forever for roasting meat for you? If I hadn't helped you last night, you would have been dead," I said, glaring at Stella.
"Zack, don't go too far! If you have a problem, take it out on me. Why are you yelling at Stella?" Leo started shouting at me.
'Fine, do whatever you want. I'm done with this.' My patience had run out. I struggled to hold back my anger. Even my eyes turned red.
Mandy saw I wasn't doing well and wanted to help explain, but I stopped her.
"That's enough. Since you all dislike me so much, let's go our separate ways. From now on, the three of you can fend for yourselves. Mandy and I will stick together." With that, I grabbed Mandy and turned to leave.
"Just go! Who cares about you?" Quinn spat behind me, and Stella turned her head away, not even looking at me.
I didn't bother to say anything more. Time would prove everything.
Just as I took a few steps away, Quinn grabbed Mandy and tried to persuade her, "You should stay with us. This guy isn't a good person. He's not very capable. He's lecherous and often tries to take advantage of girls. He also loves to brag. He's definitely not a good guy!"
Mandy stared at Quinn's hand on her arm without saying a word.
A hint of disappointment flashed in my eyes. As expected, Mandy would rather believe these two b*tches than trust me.
