Miracle
I woke up in an unfamiliar bed, disoriented and still groggy. I closed my eyes for a moment, trying to make sense of my surroundings, and then it struck me—this was no longer the prison cell. My heart skipped a beat as I checked my hands and feet and found no more chains restraining me.
Just as I was beginning to process this unexpected change, a woman in a white suit entered the room, interrupting my wandering thoughts. She held a tray with various items on it, and her presence only added to my confusion.
"Hi, how are you feeling?" she asked, her voice gentle but filled with curiosity.
"Where am I?" I managed to ask, still trying to make sense of the situation. I was sure this wasn't the afterlife, and the woman before me certainly wasn't the Moon Goddess.
"You're in Silver Claw Hospital, Miss," she explained calmly. "Beta Alex sent you here yesterday because you fainted."
The memories of Hillary's whipping and the pain in my back came flooding back to me. I could still feel the residual discomfort, but it seemed that they had applied some medicine to alleviate the ache.
Questions about how Alex knew I had fainted and whether they had checked on me swirled in my mind, but I realized that these concerns were not my immediate priority. Now that I was awake, I had a feeling they would expect me to start working soon, and I needed to prepare myself for that.
"I feel okay now, Miss. You can tell Beta Alex or Hillary that I'm awake and that I can start working as an omega," I informed the nurse. However, the nurse furrowed her brows, appearing somewhat puzzled by my statement. She ignored my request and instead placed a string in my hand, connecting it to a pole.
Is this a new form of restraint, I wondered, my anxiety rising.
"Alpha Theron told us to monitor you until you are completely healed, Miss," the nurse explained. "I don't know what your connection is to our Alpha, but I'm just going to follow his orders."
I lay bedridden for three long days, the hospital room feeling more like a lonely cell. No one came to visit me during that time, but I hadn't expected any visitors. After all, I was just a captive, not someone worthy of their time or attention.
As boredom gnawed at me, I toyed with the idea of running away. But where would I go if I managed to escape? And what if they find me again? The thought of being recaptured filled me with dread.
In those quiet, solitary days, I came to a somber realization. No matter how hard I tried to run from my fate, I had always ended up in the same desperate situation. It seemed as though destiny had a way of catching up with me, no matter how fast or far I tried to flee.
"Oh, how are you, Princess?" Hillary taunted as she entered the room, followed by Zach and Alex. I waited for their Alpha to appear, but there was no sign of him.
Where is he?
"Looking for someone?" Hillary teased further, a cruel edge to her words. "Sorry, Princess, but Alpha Theron isn't here. You're not worthy of his time," she added, her tone filled with mockery.
I heaved a sigh and met her judgmental eyes. "I can start working now, Hillary. Tell the nurse that I'm good to go."
Hillary raised her brows, a smirk playing on her lips. "Are you commanding me?" she asked.
Hillary's behavior struck a chord within me, reminding me of the entitled individuals I had fled from in my previous pack. It was disheartening to find myself in a similar situation once again. I had only known Hillary for a short period, but it was becoming increasingly clear that she was not a good person, or perhaps I was just someone she couldn't respect.
"I'm just telling you that I can work now, and if you interpret that negatively, then it's not my fault anymo..." My words trailed off as she abruptly slapped me, her actions shocking and painful.
"Who do you think you are?" she demanded angrily.
"Hillary!" Alex's voice boomed, intervening. "That's enough."
I couldn't help but scoff bitterly at the unlucky fate that seemed to follow me wherever I went. It felt as though I had lost count of the number of times I had been subjected to such treatment in my lifetime.
What did I do to deserve this?
"She's a rogue for goddamn sake, Alex. We shouldn't have given her this kind of treatment and should have let her rot in the cell for all I care. Did the Alpha go soft with pretty girls nowadays?" Hillary hissed, her anger still simmering.
"I said that's enough! Do you want to be punished?" Alex retorted sternly.
Hillary only rolled her eyes in response and turned to Zach, clinging onto his arm. Zach, who had remained silent since he entered the room, seemed to have chosen to stay out of the confrontation. The tension in the room was palpable, and I couldn't help but wonder how much more I would have to endure in this unforgiving environment.
"What's going on here?"
The familiar voice sent my heart racing, and I couldn't help but glance in the direction of the door. There stood their Alpha, radiating authority.
"Nothing, Alpha. Hillary is just whining again," Alex replied.
Their Alpha fixed his gaze on Hillary, his expression unreadable. "What's your problem again, Hillary?"
Hillary snorted in response before voicing her concern. "I'm just wondering why you're giving that stupid weakling different treatment. You've never sent captives to the hospital after they have fainted. So, why did you send her here? Is it because she's pretty?" She confessed, her words dripping with hatred.
The Alpha's icy blue eyes bore into Hillary as he responded with a measured tone. "Our pack has certain standards when it comes to the treatment of captives, Hillary, and you should be aware of that. As for her, I'm giving her a chance to prove herself, regardless of her circumstances. If she fails me, death will be her reward."
Coldness ran through my system at his last word. How could they speak of death so casually, as if taking a life were just a routine matter? And hearing that word come from him, the Alpha, stung me for reasons I couldn't quite understand.
‘You'll kill me?’ I questioned in my mind, the words feeling like a lump in my throat. The Alpha’s forehead creased, as though he had sensed the unspoken question, even though I had blocked the mind link.
"If you permit, I can start working now, Alpha," I said aloud, my voice steady despite the disappointment I felt regarding his previous declaration.
His gaze remained on me, seemingly indifferent to the presence of the others in the room. Alex stood by his side, prepared to carry out his orders, while Hillary and Zach remained near the door, silently observing the situation.
I couldn't help but feel like Alpha Theron was probing my thoughts, trying to decipher the emotions and thoughts I had been concealing. It was a disconcerting sensation.
Then, to my surprise, a mind link reached me, accompanied by a sudden thump in my heart. How was this possible? I thought, taken aback by the unexpected communication.
'I won't kill you,' his message conveyed, and my eyes widened in response. It was a reassuring statement, but the mystery of how he had established the mind link remained.
