Chapter 4 ELSIE “I didn’t have to see the woman to know there was one, Kayla. I’m not an idiot.” Less than twelve hours after practically sprinting out of Brett’s apartment, I spend Thursday morning crouching over a set of brown boxes in front of me. The A/C in my new apartment is on full blast today, making me shiver. Though the temp is nearly ninety degrees outside, the inside of my new apartment is like a freezer. After my movers arrive with my first set of boxes from Kansas, I unpack fifteen sets of cooking ware I don’t even use, feeling like a slab of meat set aside in the fridge, just waiting for the fire.
