CHAPTER 1
Maintaining a low profile within a wolf pack is a challenge that most find difficult, but for someone like me—who is regarded as a medical marvel along with my twin brother—it becomes an even more intricate task. The whispers and curious glances draw attention wherever we go. Contrary to popular belief, multiple births among werewolves are an anomaly, making our existence a subject of fascination and scrutiny within our community. As we navigate the complexities of our unique situation, we constantly feel the weight of expectation and the need to blend in, which often feels just out of reach. In our species, it’s rare to have more than one baby at a time when a pregnancy occurs. Typically, we only welcome a single child. However, we struck gold with our arrival. My brother and I are twins, and, despite being just 17, our bond is exceptionally strong. We share a connection that surpasses that of many other werewolf siblings, almost as if we’re two halves of the same whole. We often find ourselves finishing each other’s sentences effortlessly, reflecting the deep understanding we have of one another. My mother has already expressed her opinion, wondering what it's going to be like when we find our mates, who are meant to be our other halves, the other half of our souls, when we are so close. She doesn't claim to be worried about it, but I know that she is. She can't really fool us as well as she thinks she can. It's almost probably related to our father being the head warrior of the pack as well. He received that title at the age of 28 and has held it for all these years. And I don't think anyone will take that title away from him anytime soon. If anyone tries, he'll nominate either myself or my brother. That's why he works us so hard. For example, this morning, it's only dawn, and we've already jogged halfway around the pack territory. "So Amberly, got any plans for tonight?" Evan asked. "Why do you ask?" I asked, confused. I mean, it's a school night. Why would I have something planned? "Because I've seen you and your friends huddled in little groups over the last few days, which usually means trouble." He smirked. "I don't know what you are talking about." I said, trying not to give anything away. "Alright. If you don't want to talk about that. I need to talk to you about Molly." He said. And I rolled my eyes. "You hate talking to me about her because you know how I feel about her." I said, keeping up with him even though I was only 6 feet tall and he was 6 feet 5 inches. Six feet is tall for a she-wolf, but there's not really anything normal about myself or my brother. "I just think that something is going on behind my back. And I need you to tell me if you notice anything. Don't try to spare my feelings." Evan said. "Firstly, when have I ever tried to spare your feelings? I've always been upfront and honest, haven't I?" I asked. And he looked at me, hesitantly shaking his head. "Good. I haven't noticed anything, but she wouldn't do anything in front of me because I'm your sister. She knows how close we are. But I've heard from other people that she's a tramp. She'll open her legs for any guy looking at her." I said. That definitely wasn't the answer that Evan was looking for. Sometimes, I felt that he was testing me, and this was one of those times. Because once he heard what I had to say, he tripped me and caused me to fall head over t**s on the ground. I got back up as quickly as possible, and he was ahead of me, but he was jogging backward while giving me the finger with a smile. So I ran even faster to catch up, and when he realized that I wasn't slowing down, it was too late for him to turn and run. I tackled him to the ground and made sure he was facing down on the ground so I could get up and start running faster. After that, it turned into a race, and every time we caught each other, we sabotaged each other to try to get ahead. But when we returned to our nice, newly built single-story home, I burst through the door with my arms up in victory and laughing in Evan's face. When I turned around, I saw our father standing in the doorway with a stopwatch. "Hi, Dad." I said. "8 seconds longer than yesterday. Let me guess, you were screwing around instead of jogging." He said. I looked at Evan, and we both knew we would pay for that. Dad didn't want us to take our training as a joke. It always had to be serious business, even if we were already two of the best fighters in the pack. Even better than some of the grown warriors they have protecting the pack. "50 push ups. Now." He demanded. So we went to the living room, and we both rolled out yoga mats and started doing push-ups on them. We only did that so we didn't get sweat all over the carpet, which would have stunk up the place. Mom was in the kitchen watching us with a disappointed look. Not towards us. Towards dad. We knew that she didn't like him pushing us as hard as he did, but we understood why he did it. We were the only teenagers in this pack who were actually allowed to fight with the warriors if there was ever an attack, and we have had our share of rogue attacks. They've become more frequent, so Dad works us as hard as he does. He only does it because he has to ensure we're prepared. It's one thing losing a warrior but losing one of his kids. He will never forgive him for that. Since the war that occurred before we were born, rogues have been out of control now more than ever since the human race has almost been deemed extinct. Almost. They aren't extinct yet. But there aren't too many left. We expect no humans will be left alive by the end of our lives. I can't fault him for that. When we finished the push-ups, we both needed a shower badly, but Mom stood in the way. "Sit at the table and eat first." She ordered. "We're going to stink up the kitchen while eating." I said. So Mom turned to look at Dad with a very knowing look. "It'll be fine. The windows are open. Come and eat." Dad said. So we went to the kitchen to eat breakfast, which was still hot, thanks to Mom getting out of bed so early to cook for us. I told her that she didn't have to, but the boys insisted on having breakfast. I've even offered to cook when I get back from jogging, but apparently, they don't want sweat in their food. They're just being assholes. And difficult. You know, typical men. I got up and walked down the hallway as soon as we finished breakfast. Evan ran past me and pushed me into the wall, and he ran toward the bathroom. "No, you don't, asshole." I ran after him. He made it to the bathroom, but I dove on the ground, grabbing his leg before he closed the door, and I tried to drag him out. I didn't let go of him as I made my way to my feet, and I grabbed him around the waist and tried to pull him out. I reached around to the front of him and twisted his n****e, causing him to growl at me, and I started laughing. "Let me in first." I yelled. "I got here first." "Because you pushed me out of the way." "I don't care. I still got here first." He yelled. "Would you two keep it down?" Mom yelled from the kitchen. "Sorry mom." I sang out. I turned back to look at Evan, who had turned around to look at me while I still had my arms around his waist. "Want a kiss?" He asked. So I threw my head forward and headbutted him in the face so he let go of the doorframe, and I pushed my way into the bathroom, and I pushed him out and slammed the door and locked it. "Don't f**k with me asshole." I yelled through the closed door. So I had a shower, grabbed my towel out of the cupboard, wrapped it around my chest as I opened the door, and walked out of the bathroom and down the hallway to my room. I was expecting to get into trouble for headbutting him, but when I saw Dad, he just smirked at me as he went into his room. I got dressed, brushed my really long, straight blonde hair, and applied a little bit of makeup—not too mu As we were getting ready to leave for school, someone knocked on the door, so Dad answered, and Beta Justin was standing there. "I'm sorry to interrupt you so early, Michael. Good morning, Madison." Beta Justin said. "Good morning." Mom said, standing up. "Michael, can I please speak to you in private? It's urgent." Beta Justin said. "You can't talk about this in front of my family? I don't keep secrets from them." Dad said. "I'm sorry. The matter is Alpha orders." Beta Justin said. If it was Alpha's orders, then it was definitely serious. And we had no idea what the hell was going on. All Evan and I could do was speculate, and Mom stayed really quiet while we were talking. It was obvious that she was worried, but she was trying not to show it. Her facial expressions were fine. But we knew when she was nervous or worried because she stopped talking. That was her 'tell' whenever something was wrong with her. She didn't know that we knew. But Dad ushered Beta Justin out the front door so they could speak outside, where we couldn't hear them. And it looked serious.
