Chapter 5 Traditions

POV: Sapphire

"Thanks for the ride, um, Jack." I thank Jack and hop out of his truck. "It's not a problem. Suzanne and I will miss you around the house, especially you, Rusty." Jack says. I let Rusty out of the truck and put the leash on her so she doesn't run off. "You're so sweet, I'll see you around, I guess," I say and shut the truck doors.

"Come on girl, let's go see your new home, yeah?" I say to Rusty. I lead her into our apartment. I show her her bed and all of her new toys.

The meeting with the social worker went well. I was able to get all of my official records such as my birth certificate and social security card. During the meeting, I asked her if it was possible to find out my father's name. I would like to meet him at least once if he is still living. I want to know why he doesn't want me. Was I such a burden on his life? He left my mom to die.

My social worker told me, I could not find out who he was. The reason for this is because the court records are sealed. My biological father signed all his rights away with a no-contact clause. She gave me a speech I'm sure she's given a million times before. The basis of her speech was If I want the court records unsealed then I have to get a lawyer and go before the courts to unseal them. I can't afford that. I would also have to have a very compelling reason to find him. My silly personal question would never cut it. If I needed a kidney that would be a different story.

I was really hoping those records would be in my file but they're sealed. I am able to see some information about my mother though. It's nothing I don't already know. I have an aunt out there but she has mental problems and was ruled unfit to take custody of me. My mom didn't have much family around.

I could fight for the name but right now I don't think it's worth it. I've survived all my life with this wondering, I can do it for the rest of my life. Who knows, maybe one day he might regret his decision and come looking for me.

Anyway, I have a break-up to prepare for. Lucy will take care of Rusty tonight. I have to stop by the cafe to drop her off and she has some surprise for me. Josh will be picking me up from the cafe.

I take an everything shower, meaning my body gets a full detail. I need to look my best tonight. An hour later I'm out of the shower. I don't plan on eating dinner with Josh. I'm not dragging this any more than I have to. I walk out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel and into the kitchen. I heat up a cup of noodles in the microwave quickly and grab a soda from the fridge.

Once I've eaten I begin blow drying my hair. I'm not going to do anything too fancy with it. I don't have much hair to do much with anyway since it's shoulder-length. It's easier for me to have low-maintenance hair with how busy I am with school and work. I just give myself a nice little blowout.

I put minimum make-up on. Just a little foundation, eyeliner, blush, and dusty rose lipstick with a glitter clear lip gloss layered on top. I never wear much make-up. Even this is a little much for me. My normal make-up consists of just some foundation, eyeliner, and clear lip gloss.

After my hair and make-up are taken care of I change into the dress I've chosen for tonight. I had bought this dress specifically for tonight only it serves a new purpose now. It's a classic little black short bodycon dress. I have a push-up bra on so my boobs are on full display. I feel like I'm in one of those nature shows where the animals do this big display to attract a mate.

Once I'm done getting dressed, I grab all of my things and put the leash back on Rusty. I'm riding my skateboard to the cafe so I'll have to put my heels on when I get there. I've come very prepared tonight. I refuse to let this night get screwed up.

Soon I find myself at the cafe. Rusty runs inside the cafe sniffing around. I'm so glad no one is in here today. Lucy gave me the day off today for my birthday. I normally work here after school for a few hours. I get my best hours during the summer and weekends.

"Oh my! Well, aren't you a big girl?" Lucy pats Rusy's head. Rusty wags her tail excitedly. "Hi." I greet my boss. "Hello, Sapphire. Happy Birthday! I made you this cake. Have a slice and take it home tomorrow." Lucy says showing me a cake. "Awe thank you, Lucy. This is great." I tell her.

"Yes, It's you're favorite, chocolate chocolate chip with cream cheese frosting and a strawberry filling." Yummy. I love chocolate-covered strawberries. Anything with Chocolate and Strawberry in the name I will devour it. "You're the best Lucy." I thank her. She really is the best. This woman has done a lot for me. She gave me a job and helped me make a bank account along with a savings account. She has made me chicken noodle soup when I was sick. I would always come to work even though I was sick. Lucy would always make me lie down upstairs in the loft and she would take care of me.

The cafe has a loft that Lucy used to live in but now she mainly uses it as her office. Lucy slices the cake and gives me a piece. I gladly take the plate from her. Rusty whimpers begging for a bite. "I'm sorry baby, but you can't have any of this. It's not good for you." I coo at her.

"How about a pup cup for Rusty? Did I say that right, Pup cup?" Lucy asks. "Yes, you said it right," I confirm. Sometimes she tries to say trending terms but falls short. Lucy brings Rusty a small bowl of whipped cream and places it on the floor for her. "Aren't you going to eat a slice?" I ask her. "Oh, yes, of course. After I give you this. In Korean culture when a person has their coming of age birthday meaning they are an adult now, we present them with roses and perfume. You are 18 now and officially considered an adult so these are for you." Lucy says holding out a bouquet of roses and a bottle of perfume. "Oh, wow. That is so nice. Thank you." I take the gifts respectfully. I will never refuse her culture. Lucy shares things about her culture with me a lot. I'm proud that she cared enough for me to consider including me in this tradition.

We eat the cake together talking and laughing as I wait for Josh. He's running a little late actually. I wonder if he disappeared with Mia earlier and that's what's or who's keeping him. Don't you worry your pretty little hair about it, Mia. Josh is all yours. Mia and Josh can have each other for all I care.

I wish I had seen the signs sooner. They were so subtle and he was so sweet and charming. Josh has this way of sucking you into his charms and making you fall for him instantly. He always says all the right things. He's so cute.

No! No, Saf, you can't think like that. I have to remember that everything Josh did was all a lie. I'm wondering if he acted like that just to get into my pants. Is that all this relationship was? So he can conquer me? How could I be such an i***t to trust him? All he wanted out of me was to get inside of me. Well, I have news for him, that will NEVER happen.

I hear the bell on the door ring signaling someone has entered the cafe. I look over to the door to see it the bastard himself, Josh. "Hey, babe, I am so sorry I'm late. I got caught up in things and then I ran into Mia. We got to talking and lost track of time. I am so sorry." Josh says. So he was with HER.

"It's fine." I ground out. "Really?! Gosh, I thought I screwed everything up. This is your birthday after all and you should be the center of attention." Josh says almost in shock I forgave him so fast. If I was supposed to be the center of attention for him today then why the hell did he ditch me? Oh I know, that b***h! How dare he think I forgive him. Guess what bucko the night's not over yet. Just you wait.

"Ready? I'm starved." I say as an excuse. I'm getting ready for the next phase of my plan. It's the ending. "Oh, yeah. Let's go. I'll just grab this for you." Josh grabs my skateboard and bag. I switch my shoes quickly and grab my helmet heading out to the car alongside Josh.

"Babe, I have to say you look hot. I can't wait to show you just how hot you are. How hot you make me." Josh says flirtatiously. I know I'm hot. I made damn sure of it. I'm so glad he noticed though I wanted to gag at hearing how hot I make him. That will never happen, ever.

"Aw, thank you. You're so sweet." I tell him laying it on thick. He can't suspect anything is off right now. This is the finale. I will have my revenge on Josh Rivers. He will regret the day he ever Cheated on me.
