Chapter 14 Challenged

2447 Words
POV: Sapphire "Ok, Saf, you wanted to talk to me after your shift, let's talk." Lucy motions toward a table. It's the end of the day and my shift at the cafe has ended. I told Mrs. Lucy I needed to speak with her later about something. She seemed concerned and like she wanted to press me about it but didn't. We sit at the table facing each other. "Mrs. Lucy, you were right about me not just being sick. I-I'm pregnant." I tell her. If she fires me she fires me. I will figure things out. "Ooh, was it that cheater? That cheater touch you?" Lucy asks. "No! no, he and I never did anything like that. I'm meeting the guy here tomorrow morning to tell him. Please don't say a word of this to anyone." I tell her. "Good, no one will disturb you here. A baby needs a good father in its life. How long have you known this man? Is he a good man? Why have I not met him yet?" Lucy asks. Is this what parents are like? "S-so I'm not fired?" I ask nervously ignoring her other questions. "What!? No, I would never. A child needs a good loving home with parents who can support them. My late husband worked very hard to open this cafe. Now I run it in his honor. He always said those who need help will show themselves to those who can give it so if someone needs something and you have the thing they need you give and the universe will provide. I helped you because you needed it. You needed a family to lean on. A family has an infinite number of spaces. Listen to me, Sapphire. When you came into the cafe looking for a job, I was only going through the motions. I had lost my husband two years prior. When you walked through that door I felt as if he was sending me a message. You are a blessing. This child no matter how it came to be is a blessing. You, my dear, are always welcome here." Lucy says. By the end of her speech tears are streaming down my face. "Thank you. You have no idea how much you have done for me." I tell her through the tears. "I know what I have done. Now stop crying and answer the question. Who has fathered this child? How long have you known him?" Lucy begins repeating her previous questions causing me to chuckle. She knows when someone needs a moment but when that moment is over she will get what she wants out of you. I just don't want to disappoint her. "I don't really know him. It was kind of a one-time thing. I haven't seen him since my birthday. His name is Hayden." I answer her questions giving her what she wants. "Ahh, well, if he is a good man he will step up for the child," Lucy says. "Thank you, Lucy. You truly are godsent." I tell her full of emotion. "You are welcome. Maybe you can start saving for a car next because you will need one. It's not safe for you to be riding around on that skateboard all the time." Lucy says. She's never liked my skateboard. I know she's right. I can't keep depending on people for rides and it would be a little difficult getting around on a skateboard with a baby. I nod promising to work towards that goal of getting a car. I have my driver's license so I should probably put that to use. I go to the bathroom to change into my shirt for the bar. I work there tonight and tomorrow night. I don't get off until midnight. Ella and Andrew are dropping me off at the bar tonight since they have a date and Levi is actually Andrew's uncle. I walk outside the cafe to see Andrew's truck. I get in on the passenger-side backseat. "Hey, guys." I greet them. "Sup, how was work? Did you bring me that cookie?" Andrew asks. "Andrew, she is not your server. We're going out to eat. You do not need a cookie right now." Ella hits Andrew on the chest scolding him. "Ow, rude. I'm not talking about your cookie. I'll eat that later. I want a cookie now." Andrew says. Gross. He did call me asking if I could save him some cookies. Lucy always bakes cookies on Friday and sends a plate to the bar and a plate for me to take home. "Yes, I have your cookies but you can only have one if you help me find a decent car for cheap," I tell him. "Finally going to start diving yourself now. My my how you've grown up. Give me the cookie Saf. I will see what I can come up with. It will most likely still need work though." Andrew agrees. "Wow, that's what you're charging to do things for is one cookie. I've been giving you the ultimate cookie and you still haven't fixed whatever is making that noise in my car. My dad's car is already down. We don't need to lose mine." Ella scoffs at her boyfriend. "Fine, fine I will look at it tomorrow. I promise to take extra care of your ultimate cookie tonight. You can find another ride, right Saf?" Andrew looks at me through the rearview mirror. "No, Andrew don't let her walk home late at night like that. You'll be done in less than two minutes anyway." Ella says. "It's fine guys, seriously. I've done it before." I say. "No, no, Andrew, will be there at midnight to pick you up no arguments. " Ella presses. She is not letting this go. "Fine but don't be calling me out like that." Andrew reluctantly agrees. Ella wounded his ego, hehe. Soon Andrew parks his truck to let me out at the bar. Welcome to The Drunk Grease Monkey. "Hey, Saf, tell that old grease monkey I said hey!" Andrew calls out. I give him a thumbs up and watch him drive away. I turn to the door and walk inside. I clock in and place my things in Levi's office where I find him. "Ah, my favorite part of the week. Tell Lucy I said thank you for the cookies." Levi tells me. "Will do. Andrew said hey." I tell him. I place my things in the corner of his office as I always do. He allows his employees to put their stuff anywhere as long as we keep up with it and it's out of the way. He lets me put my stuff in here because I carry a skateboard around and it tends to get in the way a lot. "I need to tell you something," I tell Levi nervously. "Uh oh, what did you do? Did you finally do a stupid teenage thing?" Levi is always telling me to go out and just be a kid. I wish I could. I really can't now. You can't be a kid when you're carrying a kid. "Um, yeah I did. I'm pregnant." I tell him. I need to know if I need to look for another job. I can't afford to lose this job. This job mainly pays my rent every month. "Oh, that kind of stupid. Damn. Congratulations, I guess." He says which leaves me relieved. "Yeah, I'm probably going to start asking to pick up a few shifts during the week," I tell him. "No, you're already in school and working a job every day except for Sunday. Then you work here on Fridays and Saturdays. More shifts will not help you." Levi says seriously. "Then what should I do? Get a third job? Drop out of school?" I ask. Levi has a lot of good ideas and gives great advice which is why I like to talk to him about my problems. He's helped me out before. "No third job, and don't drop out of school. You're going to need that diploma later on in life. What we can do is, have you perform her during your shift. I pay musicians to play here all of the time. I know you do this sometimes already but this time it would be different. Play a few songs and you'll get paid as all the other performers do $200. You're getting a deal because that's for a two-hour set and you're only doing two or three songs. You can do other small things here and there around the bar." Levi suggests. This deal is very appealing. I would have $400 extra which, honestly is a lot. I know it may not sound like it but it will go a long way and do a lot of good. "I don't know. I don't want music to be tainted for me." I admit unsurely. I love writing songs and playing the guitar but I know what this can lead to. "Trust me, it won't be. I used to have a group of boys who came in here to perform all the time years ago. They were just like you only they were a little older than you. They loved music, it was a stress reliever for them but they got into it and then they got discovered. Those boys are living out their dream now. They made something of themselves through their music. At the end of the day it's you're choice. You chose the songs. You have the power to say yes or no." Levi explains. "Ok, I'll try it." I agree. I realized he was right. Only I can choose if I let my music get tainted for me. "Good, now get out there. Callum is waiting for you. Try not to drop the bottle this time." Levi says. I blush nodding. Last week I dropped a bottle and it shattered. It was a brand new unopened bottle too. I make my way out to the bar where Callum is. Callum is the bar manager. He's the one who trained me to work behind the bar when I switched from waitress to bartender. "So glad you've joined me. Serve this guy while I talk to Levi. Whatever you do don't fall for his charms." Callum says jokingly and motions to the familiar-looking guy standing at the bar. I'm surprised we have a customer already. Technically we're not open yet. I look at the guy trying to figure out where I've seen him before but I can't quite put my finger on it. "Hey, If she falls for my charms it's only because I'm so irresistible. Tell Levi, I said to get out here." The guy says to Callum. Callum shakes his head and leaves to talk to Levi. "Hi, What can I get you?" I ask the guy. "Uh, just a beer. I'm Liam Keller." The guy now known as Liam leans on the bar holding his hand out for me to shake it while smirking. I shake his hand. "I know, It's hard to believe it's me." He says I'm supposed to know who he is. And that's when I recognized him. He's the guy I saw just before I bumped into Hayden. I guess he dodged a bullet. "I'm sorry am I supposed to know you?" I ask. He gives me a funny look. "U-uh I guess not." He says confused. I open a glass bottle of beer and hand it to him. "Do you want to start a tab?" I ask. "There he is! Haha, Liam, it's good to see you. I was actually just talking about you. I see you've met your replacement." Levi walks in with Callum. "My replacement?" Liam looks over at me up and down. "She can't, I plan on coming back in about a month. That is if you will have us, Levi. We need to get back to our roots pronto. We got one last tour this summer and we'll be taking a year break. We'd like to do some shows here if you'll have us. It will be completely free of charge." Liam says still giving me these funny looks. "Alright, we'll have to see about that as long as you don't get in her way. She needs the money right now." Levi says. I guess this guy is an old friend. "Alright, I wouldn't want to get in the way of the new up-and-coming star. I didn't get your name." Liam says looking over at me for my name. "Sapphire and I will never be a star. I would never subject myself to that lifestyle." I tell him bluntly. If he's some sort of record label scout he better start looking somewhere else. He smirks, "Really? Or is it just you don't think you're that good? I bet my band and I could outplay you any day." Liam says challenging me. Levi gives Liam and weird look. "Liam what the hell are you doing?" Callum asks. "Nothing, I'm just curious. She looks a little familiar." Liam says. "In other words, Saf you should be flattered because Liam only aggravates the people he likes," Callum says. "Oh, it's not just that. There's something about her that says annoy me." Liam says. "Am I going to be fired?" I ask getting annoyed with this guy. Levi chuckles shaking his head. "No, go for it," Levi says. "So what's the little girl going to do? What are you like fifteen?" Liam taunts. This isn't something I normally do but I have never turned down a challenge and I am not about to start for this prick. I go over to the stage, grab the microphone, and turn on the karaoke stuff with a random song. The song Beautiful Little Things by Benson Boone comes on. I start singing the song. When I get done Liam claps. I hold out the microphone to him but he doesn't take it. He smirks. "I'll be seeing you around little blue." He walks away. What the hell just happened? I know one thing this isn't over. Why do I feel like I just got played? "And you just made your new best friend. Man, I've never seen him pick on someone so quickly like that. I'm not really surprised by you, I expect you to take down a challenge as soon as it leaves their mouth but Liam doesn't just go out and randomly challenge someone he just met." Callum says. There was something strange about that Liam guy. Why did he react like that to me? He went from kind flirting to a full-on challenge. What was his deal?
