I had no idea when I fell to the ground, my muscles locked as pain the likes which I've never felt before assaulted me. I was being melted from the inside out, and I really had no idea what to do to escape this horrifying experience. And that's when it hit me, I was left with no other choice but to try something stupid and completely improbable. But at this point I don't think I had much of a choice.
With each second that passed, it was becoming increasingly harder and harder to breathe. I was coughing out blood and smoke, and if I didn't hurry, I would probably find myself very much dead. I had to put an idea to the test, if it fails, then at least I can accept that it was my time to die.
"Heal!"
I felt a warm energy flow through my body, as greenish golden glow also covered me. I felt liquid bubble up from the back of my throat and couldn't stop myself as I started hacking and coughing. And as I did so, I coughed out a transparent liquid that melted the floor the moment it came in contact with it. I felt drained, and so tired that I could hardly even keep my own eyes open. It was almost as if all the energy in my body had been sucked out, and all that was left was just a rough pile of flesh and bones. And so I laid there, incapable of moving because my will was too weak, and that's when I heard them getting closer again.
I thought that by now I should be out of their territory, but it seems this flame wolf scorpions were even more tenacious than I expected. I hastily got back up to my feet, ignoring my weakened bones, and the intense urge to sleep I took notice of the meter long and almost two and a half foot tall scorpions that were rapidly approaching me.
There were four of them this time, and it left me a little worried because for one I knew I couldn't outrun them, seeing as they had a much more higher speed stat than mine. Two turning my back to them would be suicide as they had a skill that could increase their speed and damage in a short burst, and no amount of running performed by my frail legs would save me from them.
But fighting these scorpions would not be totally wise either, not unless I got extremely lucky. I looked around me, hoping to find something that could help me resist the scorpions, drive them back or if possible kill them. But there was nothing but rocks and conspicuous bronze rod buried under a pile of rocks. My eyes widened in surprise as I moved towards the pile of rocks, and grabbed the bronze rod and then I pulled it out.
And it seemed I pulled it out just in time as one of the flame wolf scorpions made an attempt on my life. It jumped at me with such speed that I barely had time to react and swing the rod in my hands. There was a flash of light, and the feeling of metal cutting through flesh, before the flame wolf scorpion fell to the ground, it's head separated from it's body in a rather messy way. Since I didn't have any training with decapitation, I had cut through half of its head, from left to right.
{You have killed one flame wolf scorpion. Received +1 speed and +1 energy}
I looked down at the rod in my hand and was surprised to see that it was weirdly shaped. It was about a meter long, and it was round on one side, but on the other side it was as if the rod was tapered and pinched into a fine edge that gleamed a dull steel like color as opposed to completely bronze body of the rod. The handle I was holding was normal, but it had no guard, and with the eccentricity of this weapon or the person who made it, I had no idea what to call it. Was it a rod for blunt damage, or a sword for slicing and piercing seeing as it's tip was pointed.
But the scorpion wouldn't let me stand around and contemplate the design of the weapon as another one of them shot towards me, this time using the flame charge skill. I did not need to be faster than it, I just had to be prepared, which was why as it drew closer, I swung the rod/sword in my hand like a bat, making sure it was the blunt part of it that caught the scorpion.
It got a little too close for comfort as a little bit of the flames on its body caught on my clothes. But there was a satisfyingly loud thud, as the rod smashed into the right side of the scorpion, crushing almost all the limbs on it's right side, and throwing it onto a pile of rubble were the exposed metal support of a fallen pillar stabbed into it's helpless body.
I took a step back afterwards to gain some distance from the remaining two scorpions as I made some very astute observations. First of all, these scorpions really were stupid. They may roam in packs, but the idea of attacking together and at the same time seems to be lost on them. Plus it seems like they're very frail, and their body was not strong enough to withstand a strong hit.
What these things had going for them, was their speed, and the fact that once one of them has attacked and weakened an opponent by stinging said opponent and injecting it with poison; then that would be the only time the rest of them would be able make a move. I was thankful for such a stupid set of monsters, and with the new found confidence I had, I felt very stupid for almost dying to the dumb insects.
{You have killed one flame wolf scorpion, received +2 speed}
I ignored the message in front of me and paid attention to the remaining two scorpions. But from the look of things, it seems these guys want to keep their distance from me. They were chittering amongst themselves, almost as if they were communicating. A smarter set of monsters was not good for me, and from the look of things, these ones were a little bigger than the norm. They were three feet tall, and a meter and a quarter long, plus their pincers were serrated and had edges that glowed with heat.
{Flame Wolf Scorpion(Elite): Essence beast level 1: Flame and Poison attributes}
{This essence beast has an incredibly potent poison with fiery corrosive properties, it also has the ability to implement a flame charge ability where it's whole body is covered by fire and it's speed increased by a factor of three. On it's own this low level essence beast is not that much of a threat, however with the name Flame wolf scorpion, it is obviously this special breed of monster always roams around in packs. And it's pack could be as small as two individuals to as high as a thousand.} {Highest stats: Strength 8/ Speed 16/ Body 9/ Energy 30}
{Weakness: Blunt Damage/ Water element attacks / Earth Element attacks} {Traits: Not very intelligent / Straightforward hunters that rely on numbers/ Fast acting Poison/Can command common members of it's species}
It was still level 1, but the higher stats, bigger body, and the fact that the word elite was now added to it's name made me realize that I was no longer dealing with the same kind of monsters I've just finished dealing with. But they were keeping their distance, and I knew they would not just let me run away, so I decided to bring the fight to them. But at the same time, I also wanted to keep my distance.
"System level up throw skill to 5"
{4 skill points have been used, Throw skill is now level 5}
I shifted the rod/sword to my left hand, and used my right hand to pull out one of the cleavers I had carried with me. I had three of them, but one was already buried in the head of another flame wolf scorpion, so I had to make do. I never had any training in throwing knives, except from when I was younger and me and a couple of friends in the neighborhood would throw stones at lizards and birds, but that was back on earth, and even Leon himself had no knowledge of of throwing skills. But I did now.
With the throw skill leveled up, though not to the max, I had an instinctive knowledge of the proper posture to use, how to aim, how to keep the blade balanced, and the amount of power I needed to add into the throw to make it lethal or just a simple scratch. If this was what level 5 could do, I can't imagine what the max level would be like.
I stopped contemplating and just took a step forward and threw the cleaver with all my might. The speed and power behind the throw surprised me, and I could feel a bit of static electricity between me and the blade. Almost as if I was adding something a little extra to it as I threw it towards one of the flame wolf scorpion elites. The blade sank into it's skull, all the way to the base of it's handle, and the scorpion collapsed on the ground, very much dead.
{You have killed one flame wolf scorpion(elite), you have received +3 energy, +1 speed.}
I blinked my eyes completely surprised by the turn of events. I had no idea how just one throw of the knife was able to kill the elite flame wolf scorpion, but I suspected it was because of how high my throw skill was. I think the higher leveled a skill was, would give it an additional bonus to it's damage. I think it was like how a first time butcher would mess up when killing an animal, while a professional would take less time, and less effort to finish the work.
But my surprises did not end there, as the last flame wolf scorpion decided to turn tail and run. I was only surprised for a few seconds before I pulled out another ckeaver and threw it at like a discuss as the legs of the fleeing scorpion. The cleaver…..cleaved? And cut through it's entire legs on the right side of it's body, bringing the monsters to a screeching painful halt as it chittered loudly in pain. I was afraid it was going to draw attention to me, so I quickly made my way to it, and just to be safe, I used the edged part of the rod to slice off it's singer. And then I stabbed the rod into it's head, putting an end to the menace of this bloody things once and for all.
{You have killed one flame wolf scorpion(elite), you've received +3 energy, +stat point.}
{You have reached the required threshold to become a body refining specialist. All extra stat points has been stored, would you like to shed your mortal coils.}
{It is advice that host find a secure place before beginning cultivation journey.}
{Mission Accomplished: explore the ruined grand hall for one hour} {You have received +2 to all stats}.
The moment I saw the mission accomplished message, it felt as if a massive weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I retrieve the cleavers I had used, hung them over my belt, and ran back towards the center of the hall, where my storage room was located. I kept myself focused, keeping an eye out for any sort of ambush as I dragged my exhausted body back to the only safe haven in this place where death seemed to lurk at every corner.
I made it to the storage room safely and without any incident. But the moment I got back, I just collapsed and started sleeping my very terrifying experience away. And even though it was still morning, I felt like I've been awake for an entire week. The shedding of my mortal coils can wait until after I'm not so tired and terrified. Besides I think I need a bath, apart from being bloody, I might have peed myself. But I was to tired to care, maybe my head would be clearer when I've rested a bit.
