With the system undergoing its upgrade, I felt the need to make myself useful, plus I've been cooped up in this storage room for a week, and to be honest I was a little tired of doing so. I wanted to see the world, to experience a breath of fresh air in this new world without having to worry about the danger, or getting irritated by the constant system alerts. But this world, especially this ruins that I've now found myself, was not a safe place. So if I wanted to experience even a second of fresh air, I had to make it so that I had a place that was free of danger, and I had an idea about how to go about doing so.
From what I can remember, based on Leon's memories, the grand hall above my head was supposed to be the safest and most defensible place in the whole of the celestial beast sect. of course seeing how things turned out, I would say he placed his bet on the wrong piece of information. While there wasn't much I could do, I could at least clean the place up, and build some sort of barricade around the entrance to my storage shed. It wouldn't do much keeping the giant monsters out, but it would go a long way in keeping beasts like the scorpion fire wolf away from me.
I picked up a shovel, a broom, a rake, a hammer; though much larger than the one which broke my fingers. A huge basket with straps to be worn over a person's back, some chisels, more kitchen knives and a wide brim hat for fashion purposes. At least now I can say that I look every bit like a laborer. This should keep me busy until the system is done with the update.
When I came up, I realized that it was nighttime. Now I didn't think it was a good idea to make any sort of noise at night, but everything else was so loud it was a surprise that I couldn't hear it from the storage shed below. The monsters all seem to have a night life of their own, it was expected that many of them would be nocturnal, but there seem to be none of them within the vicinity of the great hall. Whatever the case may be, it means I can actually get to work.
The first thing I did was to clear all the skeletons and pieces of broken bone and dust around the entrance and vicinity of the entrance to the storage room. I cleared away all of the debris in a diameter of almost twenty meters. At first it seemed too big a space to be able to defend, but right now, I don't think I cared too much. I just wanted the place to be clean and got a little carried away.
Though a twenty meter circumference is too much, I believe that I should be able to make a sort of maze that would make it a little harder for the smaller monsters to get close to me, but that all seems like a waste of time seeing as the bigger ones could just as easily smash everything I build to bits. I needed a way to keep all monsters away, and I do have a way, only problem is that I need to be in the Dantian opening realm, when it becomes possible for me to store Qi within my body, and not just that. I should at least have attained an apprentice level proficiency in wards and formations.
Until then the best option I had was to probably keep plants or materials that monsters find unfavorable. But with the sheer amount of monsters, each with their own unique genetic makeup, what repels one away, would probably attract another. Back home, on earth and In Nigeria, my people had a saying, 'one man's food, is another man's poison'. But I'm not sure I can call them my people anymore, after all it doesn't get any weirder than being stuck in a foreign world, with memories and a body that does not belong to you.
I felt completely cut off from everything I know so to avoid feeling all sorts of crap. I would focus on getting this place up and running. There were a plethora of concrete blocks all over the hall, many of them seem to have been blasted out from outside, and others came from the fallen pillars all over the grand hall and from sections of the building that had already collapsed. The old me would have thought it impossible, and downright stupid to be able to break, much less move those giant chunks of stone and cement. But I had been changed, fundamentally and in more ways than one.
I was stronger, and faster, more resilient and I think a lot smarter too. I was able to move most of the intact pillars, though it took a lot out of me as they seemed to weigh a lot more than normal pillars. However the pillars seemed as if they had a mind of their own and subtly moved themselves in the direction that I wanted them to. But maybe that's just me losing my mind, and thinking that concrete can move itself. I arranged all of the pillars in a weird circle; it looked more like decahedron than a circle, though it had more sides than ten.
After that I took the chisel with me, and started shaving off the top of the pillars, scrubbing away the designs and symbols on them, in order to make them smooth enough for me to stack more rocks on it.
This turned out to be my hardest job yet, as it took a lot of time, and effort. So much so that even with the above human possibilities body I now had, after an hour my wrist were aching and I felt so tired I almost passed out. But one of the perks of having a superior body was the fact that you recovered from a lot of things a lot faster than the average human. So when my stamina was recovered enough, I went right back in.
It was repetitive, and it was boring. But I found myself so lost in my actions that I missed the return of the system, ignored all of the system messages I received, and just focused on the monotonous task in front of him. I kept at it all night, slaving away until the first glimpse of the sun snapped me out of my trance.
When I finally came to, I realized that I was covered with dust and so were my surroundings. Everything that I had wanted to clean was now dirty all over again, but at the very least I don't think it was any fault of mine. This was just the repercussions of working. The system update was already completed, which was probably why there was a red blinking dot at the edge of my vision, however I just chose to ignore it, and I was left alone. There were no screens popping up in front of me, and no missions either. I knew that it was probably risky ignoring the system like this, but I didn't care. I was determined to enjoy my freedom and rest from the systems constant intrusions.
I went back to the storage room, had a meal, took my bath, went to sleep and then woke up feeling very refreshed. Then I went back up to the great hall and spent most of the entire day chiseling rocks and broken slabs of concrete into evenly shaped bricks. Half way through I was faced with a little problem. The storage shed had no cement or adhesive of any sort, so I had no idea how to make the bricks stick to each other making them into a proper wall. I searched all over the place, but couldn't find anything, apart for reference points to essence monsters, Qi demons and magical beasts that had secretions that were powerful adhesive, strong enough to put even cement to shame. But apart from that there was a way to make a natural version from a couple of plants and parts from different monsters.
There was no immediate solution in sight, so all I could do for now was continue making bricks until I knew that I no longer had to. Besides there had to be enough of it, before I worry about how to make them all stick together. And so that's how I spent another two days, making bricks and for some reason being completely ignored by the monsters around the ruins of the great hall. But today something different and out of the norm had happened….I could hear voices, human voices.
