12 The next morning was brighter than it had been in those November days and sparse sunbeams poked through the vertical blinds, mocking in the way they beckoned you outside. Mark was out of bed and dressing when Andrew opened his eyes. “Is it time to wake up?” Andrew asked. “It’s Sunday. Stay in bed all day if you want.” “Don’t you have to go into the bakery this morning?” “Not today. My parents gave me the day off.” Mark pulled the curtains closer together over the blinds, trying to block out the daylight they usually welcomed. He tucked the blanket closer around Andrew’s shoulders and kissed Andrew’s cheek. “Go back to sleep.” Andrew was only too happy to comply.
