Brielle’s POV
I was at the bar today, writing. I was still furious with Rick the entire day. The storm had long moved on and now Rick and I were on our way to his father’s apartment. I ignored him.
“So you’re not going to speak to me for doing work last night?” he asked as we drove into the driveway of the apartment complex. It looked nearly like ours, modern and gray.
“It’s the fact that you couldn’t even work from home, and it was dangerous last night,” I hissed.
He parked the car in the parking lot. “I don’t have time to sit on this same topic about last night,” he said with irritation.
“You were at the bar the entire day, making me worry when you didn’t even let me know if you would make it home safe,” he argued.
I scoffed, “ So that made it okay for you to do the same when you work all the time, we don't even go out as much as we used to.”
“You know what?” he got out of the car as he mumbled something under his breath and slammed the car door closed.
I let out a heavy sigh and got out, slamming the door too as I followed after him. The elevator ride was silent, I stood with my arms folded under my breasts. I took in breath as the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened. Rick stepped out, I tried to remain calm, trying to get into my nothing-is-going-on look. There will be a lot of faking during this dinner.
Rick came to a stop at the door, knocking. I waited beside him. The door opened and a lady with an apron stood there. “Is my father here?”
“Oh, yes. You may step inside,” she said as she moved out of the way, opening the door wider so that we could enter.
We stood in the spacious lounge, there were no pictures around. “He will be with you soon,” the lady said as she came from the hallway and went to the open-planned kitchen, continuing to cook.
I stared out of the floor to ceiling windows as I ignored Rick again. “It’s nice to see you,” a velvety voice said. As I looked his way, my heart dropped as those magnetic eyes that burned into me yesterday are burning into me now.
“Dad,” Rick said, and I was taken aback as this was a double shock. Daylan continued to hold my gaze as if he was taken aback too. “This is my girlfriend, Brielle,” that made his facial expression falter slightly. Yes, I do have a boyfriend.
I was still being pulled his way and I hoped that it would stop because it was like I have no control over this. “Um, nice meeting you,” I said with a nervous smile.
“He extended his hand towards me and I hesitantly placed my hand in his, shaking it. It was like fire burning, and I removed my hand quickly from his.
“You have a beautiful girlfriend,” Daylan complimented, dragging the girlfriend part out.
“Thanks, but she is not up for grabs,” Rick stated as he moved past Daylan towards the sofa, taking a seat on it. But Daylan was studying my face, that made my heart beat at a rapid pace.
Daylan broke eye contact when he turned around, “I will be here permanently, so you will see more of me,” he replied to Rick. I sat down next to Rick while Daylan sat on the recliner across from us. He leaned back and crossed is leg over the other. He was wearing jeans and a grey polar neck jersey. He looked so hot.
I clasped my hands in my lap. “I don’t even know if I want to do this often with you. Although it is a start,” Rick replied.
“I just want to have this dinner to catch up. I hope that is fine,” he said. I looked away from Daylan because when his eyes found mine, I would want him even more and it’s wrong. But there is nothing that will make my anger simmer that I have towards Rick right now.
“I guess catching up is what we can do. Bare in mind that I am a busy man and I have a life. So, don’t expect this to be a consistent thing, especially after what has happened,” Ricked hissed.
“I think we can talk about that another time. I didn't expect you to bring someone with,” I looked at Daylan when he said that. His eyes were already on me and I swallowed. I can't believe he is Rick’s dad.
“So, have you seen mom?”
Daylan looked at Rick and I felt relieved again. “No, I don’t think I will right now. I am still settling in,” he replied. “So, how long have you two been dating?” he asked. I could see that this was killing him. He wants me badly.
“Five years,” Rick responded.
“Five years,” Daylan’s eyes were back on me, “That is a very long time, it’s….impressive,” he said.
“Unlike you,” Rick blurted out, Daylan’s jaw clenched, and I could tell that it was taking everything inside of him not to lash out.
“Dinner should almost be ready,” he said instead, as he shifted in the recliner and he uncrossed his leg.
Rick’s phone rang, and I rolled my eyes because I knew what this was…work. It is always work. “I have to take this,” Rick stood up and walked down the hallway.
“Sir, dinner is ready. I am heading home now,” the lady said, and Daylan thanked her before she left.
He turned his attention back to me and I did not know where to look. “I can tell that there is tension between the two of you, and it seems like…he doesn’t care about you. You are like a little precious dove who needs to be taken care of,” he said, holding my gaze, his eyes growing darker.
“What makes you think that there is any tension between us?” I asked.
“Well, you rolled your eyes. When I entered the lounge earlier, I could feel that tension, but instead, your magnetism pulled me towards you.” he leaned forward and placed his elbows on his knees.
“I think that we have to draw the line here.” I was serious now, but it was difficult.
“We have already crossed that line yesterday and I always get what I want,” there it was again that pull. I can't do this, I can't be here because this is wrong and Rick is in the other room.
“I’m loyal,” I blurted out, raising one eyebrow. I guess I wanted to remind myself that I am loyal.
“That was not the case yesterday in the bar. Touching you was like touching a rare diamond, and with the type of man that I am, I will not let you slip through my fingers.”
“So, you’re willing to lose your son because of me?” I asked.
He shrugged, “He doesn’t care about you and I can see that. So, I won't be losing him because I already lost him years ago. You heard that part. So, now I will prove to you that you will want me every minute of the day, you will feel me in your absence and nothing will stop that. I will be haunting you in your dreams. Dare to tell me that it didn’t happen yet,” how the hell does he know this? Did that happen to him too?
“How-how do you know?” I asked softly.
“I guess that is just what we feel,” he shrugged.
I stood up and started walking towards the front door. “Tell Rick that I am not feeling well,” I said as I heard him stand up, approaching me.
I struggled with the door knob. It wouldn't open. I felt him behind me and I sucked in a breath as his hand slipped from my arm towards my hand. “Stay,” he breathed against my ear and I closed my eyes as it sent goosebumps throughout my body.
I turned my head, his lips against my temple, my lips parted as my chest heaved with this intensity and that is when we heard footsteps approaching us.
“Dad.”
