Chapter 6: Something's Wrong

1000 Words
"Do you have to go?" Caroline asked him. "I do, sweetheart." He said, gently rubbing a tear off her cheek. "But don't worry, I'll be back before you know it and we can spend so much time together." "You promise?" "I promise." I leaned against the frame of the door, watching as the two embraced each other with a hug and cheek kisses. Andrew got up and came to me, his hands softly enveloped around my waist. His nose an inch away from mine as he spoke. "Will you miss me?" He asked. "You know I will," I replied. "How much are you going to miss me?" His almond brown eyes caressed my reflection in his pupils as I stared at him. "Very, very much." I giggled at him. "The three of us are." He placed a hand on my cheek. "Don't worry, it won't belong. Just a few weeks and then I'll come back to spend time with my three lovely people." I simply just admired his fatherly attitude. It's part of the reason why I married him. We exchanged a kiss before I and Caroline stood beside each other watching him get into the car. We then waved goodbye as he drove off in the black sedan he bought for us on our anniversary. A couple of years ago, I remember when he told me that he would have a special surprise for me. The answer was obvious when he took the blindfold off and showed me what it was. A couple of hours later, I lay on the couch drinking a cup of tea with Caroline's head resting gently on my belly bump. She was listening to her baby sibling. Her eyes looked at me as she smiled. I brush my hands through her short, russet hair with delicate curls that tucked behind her small ears. "Where's aunt Deborah?" She asked me, laying her head on my lap. "She's running an errand for the whole day but she'll be back here tomorrow morning. Okay?" She nodded. "She said that uncle Isaiah was gonna pick me up so I can sleepover at Jacqueline's." I froze my eyes on her for a second and cleared my throat. "Oh. Well, then. We'd better get you ready." I stood and held her hand as we walked up to her room. "Are you gonna be okay here by yourself, mommy?" "Of course, baby," I assured her. "The both of us will." Later in her room, the thought of Isaiah kept going across my mind as I and Caroline search for her pajamas to wear. He's the last person I'd expect to come onto this property. "I like that one!" She exclaimed, pointing at the star striped onesie that I held out. "This one?" I said. She nods and smiled. "Okay, sweetheart." I chuckled. "I'll put this in your bag." As I picked up the drawstring bag to put the pajamas in, the doorbell rang. I c****d my head outside the door and down the stairs. "Who is it?" I shouted. "Isaiah." A monotone voice said. I turned to Caroline and took her hand. "Come on baby." We gently went down the stairs together and reached the floor to see Isaiah and little Jacqueline standing behind the clear glass framed door. I opened it and welcomed them in. "Hi, aunt Madeline!" Jacqueline said, giving me a hug down at my legs. I smiled and greeted her. Then I caught the sight of Isaiah as Caroline and Jacqueline hugged beside me. "Hello," I said to him, staring at his ruff appearance that consisted of his choppy, dirty blonde hair that napped over the back of his neck, a copper beard, and his acorn brown eyes. "Hey." He flatly said, crossing his arms. c*****g his head over to the kids, he told them to get in his car. They hurried outside after I gave Caroline her bag. "How's, uh... how you guys doing?" He said in a gentle voice. "We're fine," I said sharply. He took a few steps toward me and I stepped back. "You- you know I'm sorry, right ?" "Isaiah... leave. Just make sure my daughter has a good time." "Yeah... I will. Congratulations on being pregnant, by the way." "Thanks," I told him He nodded slowly and walked out to the car. As soon as they drove away, I waved goodbye to them. To my surprise, I somehow felt a slight tingle in my stomach. It hurt a bit but shortly went away as I ignored it. The following night, I laid in bed reading a book with the sheets draped over my legs. The time was passing by quite peacefully until I felt the tingle from earlier. Suddenly, it became a sharp and stabbing pain, causing me to groan. I didn't know what was wrong. For some reason, I felt a damp trickling sensation between the mattress and my legs. I jerked away the sheets to see a stream of dark blood escaping down my legs. Immediately panicking, I was wincing in pain as I tried to stand. Holding my hands to my abdomen, I found myself to be shaking violently. The pain became intensely greater while the blood continued to leave down my legs, trickling between my toes as it created a small red puddle. I was scared, but to my right, I saw my phone. I grabbed and dialed Andrew's number. It went to voicemail. "No... this can't be happening." I said to myself. A couple of seconds later, I found the strength to go down the stairs and fall on the couch. Then a sudden thought came to my mind. I sat upright and dialed another number on my phone, bending weakly over the coffee table. "Emily? Yes, thank god!" I said in a panicked voice. "Please, I need your help! I... I think... I think I'm..." I could feel the words slurring out of my mouth. It wasn't soon before I passed out a minute later.
