Chapter 6: On her Knees

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Kir Tech It has been two days and not one of the dozens of emails she had sent has been returned. Her patience was wearing thin. How long did she think she could avoid her?  Scarlett stepped out of her car in the parking of the edifice, clutching her file. This little game of hers has been dragged on long enough like this. She was done playing nice. Today, she would show Cattleya that she meant business. It seemed busier than the last time she visited, with people in suits walking constantly in and out, small conversations filling the room. She wasted no time and headed straight to the reception, “Morning. I’ll need that access card again.”  Upon seeing her, the front desk receptionist sneered, “Oh it’s you. I apologize but I’ve been given express orders not to let you in.”  She frowned, having not foreseen this development. Did the macarons have the opposite effect of what she had wanted? Did she send too many emails? Ah, hell. What did she do wrong? This was getting beyond ridiculous. All she wanted was a rendezvous for God’s sake. Was that too much to ask? “Should I show you the seal again to remind you?” “This will not be required. As I’ve said, you cannot go further in.” She insisted, “My meeting with her is long overdue.” “I’m sorry but I can’t do anything for you. If you don’t leave at once, I’ll have security deal with you.”  Her shoulders slumped. She could already feel that sweet million slipping from her grasp. She would not back down without a fight. She gritted her teeth, “Call her.”  “I beg your pardon?”  She slammed her hand on the marbled desk, emphasizing her words, “Call her and tell her that Scarlett Sinclair is here to meet her. You don’t want the whole Kir family coming down here with me to personally deal with this issue, right?” Hopefully, she would buy in that excuse. She hated using blackmailing but what choice did she have now? She had to play the dirty cards. The receptionist viciously grabbed the receiver, dialed the numbers and once it connected, she said, “Dana. Ms. Sinclair is here. I’ll put her through. She's refusing to leave.” Scarlett held the receiver, pressing it against her ear, “Hi Dana, she is only delaying the inevitable. I was given only three months to cater for her needs and a week has almost passed and we haven’t made any progress. Do you understand how crucial—”  “Look, Scarlett, I understand how you feel but you have to know that you are trivial to her. She has no interest in your offers and it will be better if you accept it now instead of pursuing her.” Scarlett scoffed, her frustrating building within her, “I’m not pursuing her! She is my client! I can’t even begin my work without her.” There was a long pause before Dana sighed, adopting her professional tone, “I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do for you. The chief executive has more pressing matters to attend to. Thank you for your time and Kir Tech wishes you all the best in your future endeavors. Have a good day.” She heard the sharp click and she stared at it. She couldn’t believe it. Did she really hang up on her?  The receptionist snorted, snatching the device from her hand, “I’m sure you know your way out…” The last word she spoke trailed off and Scarlett observed how the woman suddenly changed posture, straightening her back, her eyes engaging on something else. The atmosphere changed, a silence falling into the room. Scarlett turned around, seeing Cattleya Kir herself walking out of a private elevator! Her high heels tapped in sync to her strides. She was dressed in a velvety burgundy pantsuit, her wavy golden blonde hair completely loose. It was hard not to miss her. She held her breath. Now was her chance! Cattleya stepped outside, seeing her Mercedes-Maybach Pullman was already at the entrance. One of her bodyguards rushed ahead of her to hold the door open for her. She glanced at her watch, walking down the few steps. She had twenty minutes to go to the other side of the city, where she needed to deliver a talk. She raised two fingers to her earpiece to make a call when she heard rapid footfalls behind her. “Hey, you! Wait!” Warm fingers menacingly clasped around her wrist, gripping her hand, forcing her to stop on the spot and the moment she turned, she barely saw who it was as her bodyguards reacted harshly, protectively swarming around her, breaking the stranger’s grip in record time. She heard the frantic shriek, saw papers flying out around them as a file was tossed. Her men efficiently tackled the woman to her knees. They drew their guns out, pointing it down at her, barking at her to stay down as they seized her hands, bringing them behind her back. “Cattleya. Get in the car.” Siegfried called out, reaching for her arm, hastily directing her towards the vehicle, as more bodyguards came running in the area, securing the perimeter. She instinctively glanced back only to catch the woman’s angry and confused eyes, her gaze defiantly piercing through hers as the messy caramel brown strands flew across her face.  Realization dawned on her. “Stand down, gentlemen.” Cattleya commanded, loud and clear, shaking Siegfried’s hand off her, “It’s alright. She’s an acquaintance.” The men in black suits lowered their weapons at the command, giving her space and Scarlett furiously snatched her arm away from one of those brutes, her heart thundering hard in her chest, her body trembling. Her vision blurred with tears and she snarled, bringing the back of her hand to her eyes to dry them, “Don’t touch me!” She then flinched when she saw another hand reaching towards her face. Cattleya tucked a finger under her jaw, gently tilting her head up, making her look at her. Scarlett shuddered, shaken by the impassive emerald green eyes which silently judged her, admonished her and intimidated her. “You’re relentless, aren’t you?” She asked, tightening her grip on her jaw, running her thumb across her lips slowly, dark thoughts hovering in her mind.  Scarlett dropped her gaze in shame, her heart racing, her lips throbbing. Cattleya studied her, brushing her knuckles against her cheek in a gentle caress, swiping her tears away before disdainfully releasing her with a tsk. She acknowledged her bodyguards with a nod and turned her back to them.  Scarlett sniffed. What just happened? She couldn’t understand. Unable to stop herself from quivering, she gathered herself up, swatting the hands of the men who were now trying to help her. She bravely looked towards Cattleya, finding the billionairess nonchalantly walking back to her car, slipping into the passenger seat as if nothing just happened.  No! One of the bodyguards instantly shut the door and the car drove away. She ran the few steps after it, pushing past those beasts, feeling breathless as she watched it go, cursing her luck. She felt the sharp pang of pain in her foot and she nearly lost her balance had it not been for one of the men who steadied her. She snatched her arm away, cursing at him, taking a deep breath, realizing that she had twisted her ankle. She glared at them, daring them to follow her as she painfully picked up her file and the loose papers, limping to her car. She had never felt so humiliated before. Why didn’t she wait for her? Just why the hell would she not listen to her! She was treating her as if... as if she was merely a nuisance! She never knew it could be so easy to start hating someone. She entered her car, took out her phone, looked through her contacts and dialed a number with shaking fingers. Once it connected, she spoke with a strangled voice, wiping off her tears again, “Gabriel. Can you come meet me at my flat? I need to talk to you.” ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
