The air surrounding the plane might not be tense, but the air inside it certainly was. Zayden, as usual, was working on his laptop with one of his men briefing him, and that left me with Audrey sitting oppositely. The silence had turned unbearable, but it could be considered a blessing since it was better to stay quiet than talk to her. I had been pretending to be asleep for the past hour just to avoid her. We were halfway to Senenia Island, and less than 5 hours remained until our arrival. Hoping for them to pass away as the past 5 hours would be a far-fetched wish, but that didn't mean I wouldn't hope. Initially, it was a bit awkward sitting with her, but eventually, all of us got distracted by our work and nobody was acknowledging the other's presence anymore.
I would be lying if I said that I hadn't expected some time alone with him on the plane, but before I had even thought of what to do, Audrey had popped in. I had made a mental note to remember this was Esther's doing and nothing she did had ever proven to be in my favor. For all she cared, I would have been taken away that day, and she would have easily replaced me with Audrey. It could be her plan this once as well, but I would be a fool to let her have her way.
Sighing, I sat up straight. A drink was the only thing that could blur the thoughts in my head. I got up and headed to a bar in the next compartment. It had two high tables with seats and a bar located at the corner of the room. The trip was already off to a bad start; I might as well drink some wine and make it bearable. Taking a fresh bottle of wine out, I uncorked it before pouring myself some. The first sip felt like heaven down my throat, and in a matter of seconds, my thoughts began to fade. At that point, I realized that maybe I only needed to distance myself from Audrey.
"Pass me the bottle, will you?" came her voice from behind me, right on cue.
I closed my eyes tightly and clenched my jaws. Now, I was sure that if I decided to visit hell, she would definitely follow me there as well. What could this woman possibly want now? Wasn't it clear to her that I didn't like or appreciate her company anywhere near me or Zayden?
Gulping in disdain, I made a rough motion to slide the bottle on the bar's table towards her. Her footsteps continued until they finally paused beside me, picking the bottle up. Her presence was infuriating enough, but feeling her standing beside me and drinking the same wine as me made me want to jump out of the plane. The clang resounded as she pulled a glass out of the cabinet and poured some wine into it. I quietly continued to sip on my drink, pretending she did not exist. It was better for both of us to not engage in conversation if we both wanted a peaceful trip. Even though she was the one sticking her nose into our business, I was still being kind enough to her.
"I think we may have gotten off on the wrong foot," she said after taking a few sips from her glass. Thankfully, the alcohol was already in my system, and the thought of talking to her suddenly seemed a lot more bearable.
"Was there even a right foot?" I questioned, putting my glass down and turning to stare at her. She seemed too uptight to be having this conversation with me. Her attire might have been responsible. She wore casual but the kind that screamed 'rich', and her stance resembled that of a model. The first time I saw her, I was mesmerized by her perfection. Well, perfection didn't guarantee good relations, and in our case, I found her perfection as desperation. She looked like she wanted attention, and many men might even die to give her that, but that's where Zayden came in. He wanted me. Of all the women, he wanted me. Not because he was my mate, but because he had promised to haunt me either way. I could have not been his mate, but I doubt if that would have stopped him from haunting me.
She tilted her head slightly to the side. "Maybe. Though, I would be lying if I said I didn't like you initially." She shrugged, taking another sip, and I couldn't help but watch her, amazed. What was she playing at? Was this some sort of trick, and she was toying with me? I set my glass down and pushed it further away. I turned my attention completely to her. If she wanted to talk, then I might as well get this over with so I could spend the rest of my flight in peace.
"What do you want, Audrey?" I snapped. She didn't look the least bit surprised at my reaction, so I continued, urging her to get to the point. "Do you want me to forget that you tried to make my mate yours, knowing well he didn't belong to you?" I said, coolly. "Fooling around was one thing, but marrying him?"
She didn't look ashamed or even unfazed by my remark. It didn't surprise me though; she had some guts to take this flight with us, knowing who she was in our story. The villain. But at this point, I had so many enemies that the title was worthless. I had enemies who would cross any line to get to me. Elio, Sage, Esther, Audrey, and that hunter too if he was real and not some fictional predator made up by Sage.
"We all have our duties to fulfil in this world, Raya," she said nonchalantly. Her eyes darted across the place, avoiding mine as if she didn't give a damn about a single thing I said. "Didn't you hate him but agreed to marry him nevertheless?" Her question caught me off guard.
