It suddenly made sense as his words sank in.
"She loved her brother, and I took his life. Now, she wants to take something of mine," he said, nonchalantly as if it was not something to worry about. He wasn't bothered by the fact, and no wonder, he told my bodyguards to come. He didn't trust Sage because he had understood her motive behind it.
Something about this truth hurt me more. I wasn't just Zayden's mate. I had once been her brother's girlfriend too, and his death took a toll on me as well. It was as if rage had made her blind, and she didn't think twice before attacking me.
Soon, we reached the pack prison, and the number of guards there was truly shocking. I doubted if anyone had ever fled from there. It was packed with wolf guards swarming everywhere, not letting even a bird in. I raised a brow at my mate opening the door for me. On our arrival, the tension in the air had shifted to an electrifying level. The place looked gloomy, and even though it wasn't supposed to look like it, it still managed to send a chill down my spine.
"This place is huge as hell," I commented, taking his hand and climbing out of the car.
"Welcome to my hell. The place where I inflict torment on the deserving," his voice deep as usual, along with the huge mansion-sized prison in front of me, made me feel like I was truly in hell, except the devil was my defender, and nothing could burn me down in his hell. Instead, I would only thrive in it.
My train of thought continued as we made our way inside. Several guards were waiting for us, and every guard in sight made sure to bow to their Alpha. Zayden had my hand clasped in his, and I was tightening my grip with each step. The aura inside was chilling, and the hard, rough presence of the guards wasn't exactly soothing. Although they were bowing and looked attentive, their stance was tough. As if an insect crawled by, they would stomp on it before it could move. However, Zayden looked even more terrifying in front of them. He seemed to have an effect on them that I doubted anyone was capable of having on those skilled guards. The Alpha was always the most prominent, feared, and relied on in the pack, but Zayden was taking this definition to another level.
"This way, Alpha." One of the head guards guided us. Navigating through several junctions, we finally reached a huge sealed-off room. It had a glass window, and the room inside was sealed completely from where we stood. Therefore, nobody there could reach us. A mic was placed in the booth to speak through. The glass was tinted, and an adjustable button was present to either allow the prisoner to see you or not. There was a door in the corner of the white room, and as we went to stand there, a guard from inside that room went out through it.
I felt a warm breath nearing me, "Whenever you are ready."
Inhaling deeply, I nodded to him. He did a hand gesture, and moments later, the guard reappeared from that door he had gone into. This time he was dragging a familiar woman in cuffs inside.
The room fell into silence as the guard dragged her inside. Sage Barlowe looked completely different from what she used to look like. Her face was unrecognizable almost, and her walk was lazy. Her body was badly bruised but looked partially healed. From the looks of it, she looked like she had gotten into a fight and barely made it out of there alive. I didn't see any fresh wounds, and that was enough for me to know that Zayden's men hadn't touched her or tortured her in any way. Though, from the looks of it, she didn't look like she could put up much of a fight if they decided to torture information out of her. Her face no longer resembled Elio as much as it used to, and a pang of compassion ripped through me.
Elio wouldn't have let this happen. But again, she brought it upon herself by going after me with another wolf, who was also captured.
"She's sedated to block the transition," Zayden informed me, watching me frown.
She sat down on the chair, which seemed to be fused with the floor, and her hands and legs were then bound to it. "What is this?" She asked the guard, and he quietly proceeded to stand in the corner. Sage looked lost as she looked around hastily, comprehending what was happening.
I tapped the mic button, "Hello, Sage."
My voice took her by surprise, and her eyes turned deadly. Her head snapped towards the tinted glass, except she couldn't see us. Though, the intense anger on her face didn't need to be directed towards me to be seen. She looked ready to rip out of that chair and kill me through the glass.
"Hello, b***h," she replied, a cold smile appearing on her face. Though she was confined and looked ready to fall any moment, it still made a shiver erupt through me. I couldn't believe my eyes. She wasn't the girl I was defending 2 days ago that she couldn't ever commit such a crime, yet there she was. I adjusted the glass tint to allow her to see me. Zayden remained by my side, closely watching everything. He seemed unbothered by her cold behaviour as if he had expected it long ago.
"Too afraid to come inside the room, aren't you?" She taunted. "You think that glass can protect you?" She hissed at me, jerking at her restraints and attempting to free herself from the chair. Though, it didn't budge and only created unwanted noise.
"Why do you seem to forget that you're limping because of her?" Zayden interrupted. I snapped my head at him, confused. What did he mean? Why would she be limping because of me? A dark look, almost fear, appeared on Sage's face, and I eyed her wounds closely.
No, it couldn't be...
