"f**k," I cursed lowly.
I might have the drive now, but it was Esther across from me with no one else but guards who knew nothing except that I was intruding. While I was still wrapping my head around the fact that I was right and that a monstrous woman had stolen the drive that day, Esther's face began to morph into anger.
Her eyes narrowed in on me, especially on my closed wrist which possessed a particular drive in it. I wanted to pass her a devilish smile on my victory but held myself back. Despite what she had said about me being the end of her son while she was the one betraying him, I couldn't help but think of how Zayden would feel when he would find out the truth.
"Hand that back, Dawson," she spat my last name out with disgust, and even after all her cruelty, I had never wanted to bash my fist into her face more than now. She was an elegant woman in appearance, and the werewolf looked up to this woman as one of the most prestigious Luna, yet there she was, standing like a vile vixen ready to pounce on me to steal an innocent's justice away.
"Try me, Esther," I retorted with a face determined to pounce on her guards if they took a step towards me. Maybe Zayden was wrong not to let Jax and Nico tag along or teach me hand-to-hand combat. They would have proven very helpful right now. I could handle one or two guards, but I was still too weak to handle the 4 of them standing there, waiting for Esther's command. She was already clever enough to be here herself, despite the ongoing meeting.
"You do know this is going to get you in trouble, stupid girl," she hissed at me, but I only scoffed. "We both know who's in trouble now," I said, waving the drive in the air. Her face shifted as she clenched her jaw, watching me do that. I felt relief rush through me watching her scorn. Her scorn was bliss to me, and I didn't care how cruel it sounded. As long as that woman suffered for what she had done, I was more than happy to watch her scowl.
"Why would you do something so horrible?" I questioned, genuinely. I couldn't grasp her intention behind stealing someone's justice away, especially when she was a woman too and was well aware of the atrocities poor Macy had gone through. She scoffed at me, "You wouldn't get it. You can't see your mate's needs, how would you see my intentions?" Her taunting tone was evident.
My brows furrowed, and it was my turn to scowl. What did she mean by Zayden's needs? She couldn't possibly be referring to the mating act.
"I could see everything and still wouldn't get why you stole the evidence," I gritted out. "You know why? Because there could never be an explanation for what you have done." Taking a step towards her, I continued. "Stealing evidence from the Alpha's office is one thing, but betraying your son?" I said, scrunching my nose up in disgust. The vile woman across from me seemed to be unwavering, despite my attempt to guilt-trip her. She really was made out of stone with a rock for a heart.
She sighed and began to clap. In a plaid maroon skirt and a black blouse, she looked too professional and elegant for me to go ahead and slap her hard across the face. Firstly, for her pathetic and insensitive behaviour towards a victim, and secondly for saying all the s**t about my family. But there she was, standing like she owned the f*****g world as two manicured hands of hers clapped.
"Now, if your little pathetic show has ended," she said, and with a flick of her fingers, motioned the men in uniform. "How dare you break into my office?" Her words acted as a signal because the next moment, those guards began to advance on me. My breath fastened, and I gulped down a knot forming in my throat. That didn't make the knot disappear, though.
"I have the drive, Esther. You have lost, and this would not end well for you when Zayden will find out," I warned her, clenching the drive tightly in my hand. The alarms in my head were going off as the guards neared me. The only way out of here was to fight the 4 men advancing on me, their eyes changing colours and their fangs coming out. I threw a look behind me to find nothing but the couch and a wall staring back at me. For a moment, I wished there was a compartment big enough on that couch for me to hide in, but no way would that have worked out.
"Who's going to tell him, stupid?" The woman, now standing behind the huge figures, spoke. A shiver ran down my spine at her words. What if I died here, and she disposed of my body without anybody noticing me missing, what would happen then? Zayden would never find out about my culprits, and he definitely wouldn't go pointing fingers at his mother.
"Stay the f**k away from me," I warned those guards, taking a fighting stance while taking several steps back. My gut twisted in a knot, knowing nobody would be able to protect me now - not even my mate. He might have found me last time, but this once, I doubted that Esther would wipe my existence off the face of the earth. That would make sense considering her undenied hate towards me.
"It's time you stop interfering in my business, your little white dog." She hissed at me, and despite the huge figures closing in on me, her voice seemed too chilling to ignore. "Grab her!" She said, and in a matter of seconds, hands reached out to me. Before I could react or kick their balls, I was already restrained. The huge hands pinned my hands to the back, and I couldn't help but growl at them to make them back away to no avail.
