The class is long, Harlow adjusts her shoulders uncomfortably, her muscles carrying tension, Austin’s eyes have never left her once she feels like they are scorching into her skin, she can't seem to move fluidly under his gaze. All she can think is that the last two weeks of her life are going to be rather torturous.
As soon as the bell rings, Harlow, who is usually the last one out of class, the girl that is usually last to leave the room, has her bag packed and is walking out the door at a fast pace before the final chime sounds. Austin, who hasn't even bothered to unpack his things at all, making it a complete waste of time to even be in class, is not far behind her.
He walks close. His steps are fast to catch up, walking close to her, their arms brushing as he looks down at the top of her hooded head. She is quite short for a she wolf and there is about a foot in height difference between them.
As they walk they get a lot of looks, as they are such an odd-looking pair.
One so dashingly handsome that it nearly hurts to look at, so tall and well-built, to the weird girl that hides her entire self inside a black sweater.
It is a strange scene and the thing that makes it more strange is that it is the handsome man that looks like he is chasing the girl while the weird-looking, unassuming girl is trying to escape.
"I am starting training with a Harlow tomorrow"
Austin seems to be speaking to himself as he receives no response from the girl walking shoulder to bicep with him. As she has not told him to go away, he assumes that that is a good sign and continues the one-sided conversation.
"I didn't know that your name was unisex. Maybe because you have the name. I just assumed that it was only a girl's name"
Austin wants to hit himself to stop the incessant dribble coming out his mouth. What is he even saying? Why did he think that this was a good topic of conversation? Everything is coming out wrong.
"Ahh yeah, so it is interesting that there is a man with the same name. I think it is better as a girls name”
The black hooded head swivels to the side, Harlow’s hooded navy eyes look at the strong chest at her eye level. What is this man on about? From all her observations of Austin, he is not like this. Is he falling apart before they even start the training? She decides to go to the library to do some research on temporary psychosis.
“Okay”
Harlow finally replies and quickens her pace, leaving Austin standing still. He lets her escape as it would just be like chasing her now and for what? To subject himself to more of whatever just happened.
Austin runs his hands down his face. He is embarrassed about what just transpired. He would run away from himself too. What was he even doing? What was he even saying? He just wants to dig a hole and hide in it.
While he has never pursued a lady, he assumed that he had some sort of skill. He assumed he was a smooth talker. He has never become flustered or dribbled nonsense before. He has never before in his life sounded so id*otic. The more he said, the worse it got.
Austin walks outside to catch some sun in an attempt to lick the wounds of his heavy failure and embarrassment. Deciding to pack up and head home. He is staying away for two weeks and he will probably be training long and hard, so he decides to spend the time to relax. He needs some time to think through his approach to Harlow as he has made two epic failures in a row.
Harlow sits in her next class staring blankly at her notebook. Learning psychology in one day is going to be an arduous task but she needs to get Austin’s mind sharp, she needs him sane before she can even think about starting the training required to help them survive their birthdays.
As the lunch bell rings she walks toward the library. As she approaches the door, there is a group of boys surrounding the only other future alpha in the school at present, Finn. They are laughing and keep looking in Harlow’s direction. Harlow doesn’t look up nor does she divert her direction in the slightest.
Finn slaps Lily on the ass, pushing her out in front as he leans back lazily. Lily throws a seductive wink back at Finn before striding forward.
“Future alpha Finn would like a word”
Harlow ignores the girl, her heavily shadowed eyes only looking at the floor as she steps forward. Lily sticks her hand out impatiently to grab Harlow’s elbow. Harlow evades easily.
She doesn’t need to look up, she doesn’t need to see Lily and her snobbish face, she doesn’t need to see the boys and their leering looks. Her senses are open and razor sharp, she doesn’t have to rely on her sight at all. It is the same whether her eyes are opened or closed.
“Don’t touch me”
“What the f*ck is wrong with you, you freak? You should be grateful that Future Alpha Finn even wants to talk to you at all. You should be crawling on your knees, thanking the goddess that you are even allowed to breathe the same air as Future Alpha Finn”
Harlow continues on her way unbothered in the slightest by Lily’s words. Harlow is a defensive type, not an aggressive type. She won’t do a single thing to anyone unless they lay a hand on her. Lily could call her every insult in the book and she wouldn’t even blink. Harlow is long past caring what anyone thinks of her.
“Not interested”
Finn glances at the four boys surrounding him, lifting his head slightly. The boys nod, moving from their positions to stand in behind Lily. Lily puffs out her chest in a proud way, she is Finn’s unofficial girlfriend and it gains her a lot of respect within the school.
Finn has other girls, of course, but she has managed to stay in the top spot for the longest.
“Ugly mutant, you should know what is good for you”
Finn watches with keen interest as the girl in such a large hooded sweater that reaches just above her knees and has only her finger tips that are painted a bright blue, doesn’t even pause her steps at all as she raises a hand to push the door of the library open.
Lily rushes at Harlow and, even though Finn is watching intently, he has no idea how Lily ended up flat on her back without uttering a sound and Harlow pushes open the door like nothing is happening around her.
Finn rises from his seat, his interest peaked as he walks forward, following Harlow into the library, stepping over Lily’s unconscious form without even a quick check to see if she is alright.
Harlow starts to scour the books on the shelf, paying no attention to the others. Her fingers running along the spines of the books. Yes, she could look it up on the computer, but with a wealth of free information that is not hidden behind a paywall, sometimes it is just easier to just find a book.
Feeling the texture of the paper under her fingers instead of the cold glow of the computer screen.
Finn is close, just stalking behind her. He is not even sure what draws him to the ugly freak. At first he just wanted a chat to cut off all Harlow’s contact with Austin. Anything that Austin even glances at, Finn wants to take to prove the point that he is better.
Finn has hardly even looked at Harlow since she arrived at the school. Why would he look at the girl that hides herself completely when there are others who show the entire menu before he even has a chance to order? Finn is about ease. Anyway, all the rumors can’t be false, there has to be something seriously messed up and deformed hiding under that, but her legs look fine. Maybe he could just keep the hood on and take her from behind?
Everyone has noticed the two strange encounters between Austin and Harlow in the last two days, even if Austin isn’t interested, Finn just has to prove a point. Anyway, a little charity never goes astray, the ugly girl can be content with the rest of her life because he threw her a bone just this once.
But as Finn follows Harlow’s movements and watches those bright blue, neat, short nails run along the books, he can’t help but feel something else. She isn’t flustered in his presence, even his beta can’t handle being in his presence too long when he is in his predatory zone.
