Here at Camp Cardinal
I walked into my birch wood rustic cabin taking a look around. It was beautiful, two bunk beds parallel from each other, with a huge deep red carpet in between, the bed sheets looked fluffy and the light blue color reminded me of the sky. The sheets matched the frame of a full length mirror leaning at the end of the cabin near the bathroom where the tiles were a deep brown. The decorations were minimalistic and cute, I wouldn't want to spend my summer anywhere else.
I neatly placed my suitcase in the middle of my bed. I chose bottom bunk since it seemed more convenient, one by one my folded clothes went into the drawer that was next to my bed, since there were three compartments I organized my clothes by shirts, pants/skirts and.....my under garments.
My calender went up, the rest of my belongings were put away and I checked my watch. Perfect. I still had 30 more minutes until orientation. I took a deep breath that I didn't realize I needed until now. Peace and quiet.
"WAAAAASSSSSSUUUUUUPPP!!!" Peace and quiet was vanquished. "Hey guurrrll!" My best friend Ariana Everglot burst into the room, her energy making the room seem brighter than it already was. "Hello Ariana." I greeted back. "Oh." She said, she mimicked my straight posture and tone of voice. "Hello to you too Corinne." She laughed off her guise and inspected the room. "Daym girl this place faannccyyy." "Yes." I replied. "And expensive too, I love you but please don't break anything, okay? I've been coming to this summer camp for 3 years now and they don't usually allow..lower class people here but they let me invite you because of my parents and-" "I know I know." Ariana said cutting me off, She placed her right hand over her heart.
"I, Ariana Everglot, promise to you, Corinne Abbot, that I will not break anything and will not embarass you or your parents..possibly." I looked at her with a 'really?' Face and she smiled brightly in response. My frown breaks into a smile mirroring hers. "Okay , let me go show you around." I say, "HECC YE!" She throws her bag onto the other bottom bunk facing mine. She whips around quickly bouncing clearly excited for me to show her around. She's great and I know this sounds bad but I'm jealous of her. Yes, I might be rich and my parents may own a very successful golf store but Ariana is amazing. She has a bubbly personality and is so optimistic and has no worries and on top of all that she's beautiful.
She has vibrant orange curly hair and the cutest freckles. Her sense of style is very pleasing to look at, her high waisted mom jeans with colorful socks poking through, her pastel converse and jacket. Her odd earrings that you can catch a glimpse of under all that hair that is usually sprinkled with various colorful hair clips. I on the other hand, is so bland. I wear darker colors which isn't bad but it doesn't do me any favors. All it does is makes me look like a vampire with my pale skin and black eyes and blacker straight hair, I'm underweight and like to wear long skirts and undecorative flats.
I snap out of my daze to realize Ariana told me to wait up, that she had to do something first and apparently that something was her shoving her clothes into a drawer. That is the only thing from Ariana I don't want, I roll my eyes and watch her be her usual messy self. I checked my watch. "Hurry, we only have 15 minutes until orientation.
θθθ
After almost being late to orientation even though I told Ariana multiple times to stop getting distracted we made it. Ariana giggled when we sat down "See? Calm down, we made it on time, untwist your panties and relax" She told me. I huffed "Whatever, you got l u c k y. Don't talk during the presentation." Ariana kept her smug smile and switched her attention to the male counselor on stage. Her eyes bulge out. "Corinne, who is the hottie on stage?" Oh no. I sighed. "That's Henry, leave him alone." She slowly turned her head to me. "Leave him alone? Leave him alone!? He's hot!" A few of the other kids looked at us. "Ariana!" I whisper-yelled. "He's my friend and I refuse to let you harass him. Keep your voice down and pay attention." She finally settled down and stared at Henry with a little too much interest. Orientation was already almost over but I was fine, after being here for 3 years you pretty much know everything necessary.
I go to turn to my best friend when orientation finished and to my horror saw Ariana walking towards Henry. "Oh god no please." I stood up and power walked over to them. " So I heard Camp Cardinal is a pretty romantic placccceee." I over hear Ariana flirting with the too old for her counselor. Henry notices me walking up and smiles. "Hello Corinne!" He greeted me with his usual happy persona and incredibly loud voice. There is actually a rumor that he's a robot since the only emotion he ever expresses is happiness. He is unbelievably nice which makes me feel worst for letting Ariana slip away from me and take advantage of his disadvantage of being unable to say no. Which is very very unfortunate when all the girls thirsty for him ask him to please tie their swimsuits or open a bottle of water. It's ridiculous.
Ariana grins slyly. I ignore her."Hi Henry, good to see you again." I say ."You too." He replies. Ariana pipes in "This is my best friend." She says squeezing me to death in a hug. "Oh you must be her guest everyone was talking about." Henry says. Ariana opens her mouth in surprise. "Omg! Corinne I'm famous! Take a picture." She poses over dramatically. Henry chuckles at the amusing display. "Have You girls already checked out your cabin?"
"Yes." "No"
I look at Ariana. "Y e s. Yes we have." I say through my teeth. I turn back at Henry hoping I didn't seem suspicious. "Well if you girls need anything you can ask me or any of the other counselors Derek, Sophia, and Railey for assistance. Also breakfast ends at 10 tomorrow so make sure to be there and get your daily nutrients." Ariana nods and so do I. He flashes one last smile and does our camp salute which is three fingers up, thumb and pointer finger down. Place the base of your thumb at your lips then stick your arm forward. And with that he was gone happily walking to his cabin.
Ariana stares at me. "What?" I ask. She slowly grins wide and says in a singsongy voice. "Yooouuu like him." I wanted to strangle her. "He's 25 years old." I say. "And?" I could not believe her. "I'm 16." I stress. "I don't see the problem." "You are hopeless." "But you still love me." I roll my eyes and hug her. "Yes. I do." We walk to our cabin and get ready to sleep. Tomorrow will be ....interesting.
