Sixteen Years Before
was raining that day as cliche as it sounds, but things were just not going well for the Rodriguez Family, Linda Rodriguez had just heard from her daughter- in- law that her son had died, trying to come back into the US, illegally and had drowned in the Rio Grande, but she had a plan she would seduce a rich man, so they had the life they deserved.
Linda had worked for the rich, and they had been kind to her in ways, she had not believed existed among these people, but they had helped them and had even offered to bring her son, from Mexico. She would've accepted if her son would've waited, but he didn't trust his wife to watch other his daughter, so even if he got deported back, he would take his daughter with him.
Maria, was a beautiful woman and liked using that beauty to get what she wanted, men dropped at her feet, but they never made her into a wife, but a mistress. She was just good at warming the men's bed, and never be more.
This night Linda was putting her foot down, she didn't want her granddaughter to follow her mother's foot steps, she wanted Melissa to be someone in life.
"No, I will not have you embarrassing this family further, if you wish to continue your night prowls, then get out and never come back, your daughter doesn't need your low example of being a woman."
Maria, looked at little Melissa, with hate and anger, she was only two but she knew she would never see her mother again.
"Keep the brat, but remember you are nothing without money, and the weak are always stepped on!"
"Leave, and never come back!"
With one last glare Maria left, and Melissa, hugged her grandmother in sadness. Her Father was dead and her mother abandoned her, she was learning and the rich had nothing to do with it.
(Melissa's POV)
"Mrs. Rogers you are too good to me, but I don't need anything more you have already given me so much."
"Nonsense, dear I love to pamper you!"
My whole life Mr. and Mrs. Rogers had treated me like one of their children. Mrs. Rogers had always wanted a little girl but God blessed her with only three sons, all three much oider then me. her youngest, being twenty-five, and I was just turning eighteen. So after my mother left between Grandma and Mrs. Rogers they had raised me to be the woman I was today ready to head into collage, a year ahead of the rest thanks to the guys for helping me with homework and things.
Yes, some would say I could have anything, all I had to do was ask, but I pulled away because I knew I wasn't the daughter of a rich person, I was humble and the granddaughter of one of the maids of the house, I would also help my grandmother, while balancing school and a boyfriend.
I was going to get my associate's degree, then really dive into my job. I had done a few temp jobs at the clinic and liked what I saw. Mr. Rogers thought I should aim higher like a doctor, but I couldn't abuse their kindness of helping me.
Like right now, Mrs Rogers had planned a birthday party for me, her sons, and a few family friends were here, all of which I knew. The Martins they had the most beautiful family, not in the sense that they were the goal to aim for, but literally the most beautiful family, her kids were into modeling so they had to be perfect all the time, but I kinda grew up with them. They never really said much so, The Coltens was where my best friend lived, Shay, and I grew up together and it was also thanks to her that I survived high school, her Family were oil money people, but they liked me enough I guess, and the last but at least the Blackners, Mr. Blackner was a CEO of some fancy company, while Mrs. Blackner was into music, she mostly spent her time traveling, and they had the three also, Simon, the oldest, Owen, the middle child and a close guy friend, and Jenny who didn't like me, I think more because her best friend hated me, so I stayed away from Owen, she had a big thing for him. I use to but when I met Elias I was able to put a real face to a real relationship.
It was weird but Owen had been my first kiss, we had been really little, but from there on I had had a little crush on him but I had to be realistic his family would never approve of us, so I looked else where. He was tall when before he had been the same height as me, a whole two feet taller, black curly hair he always had lightly trimmed and styled, black eyes and lightly tanned, he and his brother always kept each other in shape. He was to take over for his father in the business, because Simon had gone into personal trainer for the most famous and it was working for him, so it fell to Owen. An other reason my walls were up.
As I walked around and greeted everyone, and Mrs. Rogers thanking them fr coming. I found Elias talking to some of the men, I walked over and heard a bit of their conversation.
"It's a good investment gentlemen, you won't regret it."
"Hmm, interesting." said Mr. Blackner, then turned to me as I came closer, and he and the others walked away.
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing just sharing some ideas."
"At my birthday party?"
"Babe, calm down."
"No, because the more you do that the bigger gold digger I look."
"I need to take chances, babe, and today was the best, they ..."
"Do it on your own time, you can't corner these men like that!" I whispered softly, he looked mad but turned away without arguing with me further.I admired Elias he was thinking big, but he needed to read the room. All these people I knew and had grown up with, were watching you r every move and the people you bring into their circle is a big deal. Like I said I admired Elias he was a hard worker and had a plan on where he was going in life, like me he didn't have a rich family, but was willing to put in the time to get there. That's why I admired him...or that's why I loved him...I think.
Even when we were out side in a wide yard I needed to get away from everyone. I walked out of the back yard which was fenced in, and headed to a small park, cross the wide street. I sat in the swing for a while, before Owen, came walking toward me.
"Hey."
"Hey, yourself, what are you doing out here?"
"Probably the same as you."
I looked up at him, and smiled, just being around him made me happy and made my day a good one. I have never told him that, I didn't want things to get complicated.
"Yeah, I felt a little over whelmed in there."
"Yeah, Mrs. Rogers does love to show you off."
"I'm nothing special, just an other everyday girl just trying to survive and make her way through this big cold world."
He looked at me, and I looked away.
"Don't do that."
"Do what Owen tell the truth, she makes a big deal over me but, I don't belong in this world, and I'm not going to pretend to."
He looked away, but then hands me a small box.
"What's this?"
"It's your birthday isn't it."
"Yeah, but you don't have to get me anything."
He smiled and waited for me to open the box. Carefully I opened my gift and found the prettiest necklace ever. It had a stone in the middle and oval shaped, with little vines intertwined around the stone. We were both fans of middle earth, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, all of it.
"Thank you."
"I hope you liked it."
"Are you kidding, I love it."
He gave me a big smile, then took it from my hands and got behind me, and carefully clipped it around my neck. The feeling of his fingers grazing my neck sent goosebumps all over me, he's always had that affect on me, but there could never be anything more then a friendship between us.
"It looks beautiful on you."
I looked down at it, and looked at the stone, it was a dark green.
"That's not my birthday stone, and it doesn't match the red from the other shows?"
"It's...."
"There you are, I've been looking for you, it's time for the cake!" Shay froze for a second when she saw me and Owen.
"Sorry, am I interrupting something?"
"No, not at all!" I quickly said and got up from the swing, and could feel Owen tense up behind me.
I lead the way back to the back yard while Owen and Shay followed me. Everyone was waiting for the cake to come when I came in Mrs. Rogers brought out a beautiful cake. Everyone started singing, then clapped.
"Make a wish, sweet heart!"
I closed my eyes, thought for a second , and then blew.
This school year was going to be one to remember.
