Prologue
Jade’s pov
"This is so cool. Are you sure that it is okay?" Addison asked me, and I nodded.
"Tommy is waiting for you. I can’t believe you will be getting your first kiss. And that too at 18." She said, shaking her head disapprovingly.
"I know, I have been so busy lately that I hardly had time for anything." I said to her, and she sighed.
"Go on, I will wait here and keep watch." She said, and I frowned at this.
"I am not 14 years old that you need to keep watch for when I am making out with a guy." I said, and she looked at me.
"Your mother isn’t a normal parent. If she finds out that you sneaked out of the house, then you are in deep waters." She said.
I walked over to Tommy and found him standing there waiting for me.
I have had a crush on him for as long as I can remember.
"So, Addison told me that you want me to be your first kiss." He said and then bowed a bit. "I am most honored, my lady." He said, and I found myself smiling at this.
"Well, it is good to hear that." I said and then sighed.
"How do we do this?" I asked him, and he pulled me to him.
"Just like this." He said, and just his lips were about to touch mine a voice called out to me. We both froze, and I looked at Tommy, who let go of me and then ran off.
"What are you doing here? All you do is complain all day about how busy you are." Mom said and then scoffed. She pointed over at Tommy, who was still running off.
"But you aren’t tired because of training but because of these stunts of yours." She said, and I looked at her confused. She is talking like I sneak out all the time.
This was the first time, and I asked her if I could spend some time with friends.
"Your brother and his stupid friends tried playing a prank which failed badly." She said, and I frowned.
"What now?" I asked her, and she just sighed at this.
"They were jokingly summoning hot spirits, and they actually did summon spirits and not the good kind." She said, and I frowned.
"Are they still at the graveyard?" I asked Mom, and she nodded.
We ran to the graveyard, and just as she said, there were about three spirits there.
I prepared the spell so we could banish them back to their world. I started chanting, and as I was busy, one of them ran off. I managed to banish the other two, but the third one ran off. We started running after it, and I frowned as I watched it cling to a child.
"Kid, what are you doing here?" I asked the kid. She was terrified, and she could feel the spirit clinging to her even though she couldn’t see it.
"My friends and I, we made a dare, and I was dared to come here." She answered, sobbing. I looked at my mother, who just frowned and then nodded to me, and I shook my head.
"I am not doing that." I said, and she looked at me concerned.
"And why not? If you let this spirit linger, then it could become a problem in the future." She said, and I stood my ground.
"I am not killing a child, not now or ever." I said, and she scoffed.
"Fine then, I will do it." She said, and for a second, I thought she was bluffing. But she killed the kid, and when she was done, she looked at me.
"Banish the spirit." She said.
I did as she said, but my attention was on that poor kid.
"We could have just waited. The spirit would have tried to run off somewhere. You didn’t have to kill a child." I said, and she frowned.
"I am tired, and it is all thanks to your antics. Had you not sneaked off, then we would have handled all of this in time." She said and then frowned.
"You can’t do anything properly." She added and then walked off.
I can’t do anything properly.
I have been hearing that all my life.
We walked home in silence and found Jay and Sasha waiting for us along with Dad.
"So, did you get rid of them?" Jay asked, seemingly scared.
"Yes, but your sister here was being too soft. She never does anything properly." She repeated those words.
"Enough, how many times will you say such words to your own daughter?" Dad asked her.
He walked to me and patted my head.
"I am sure that you did well, kiddo." He said, and I nodded.
My eyes landed on my older sister, who also had a smile on her face.
"I will calm Mom down." She said and walked off.
"I am sorry sister, it was just a dump prank that went wrong." Jay said, and I looked at him.
"Because of that dump prank of yours, a kid lost their life tonight." I said and then frowned.
"You are 15 years old, Jay. You are old enough to know right from wrong." I said, and then I walked to my bedroom.
I just wanted to take a quick bath, but it became longer than I thought.
My mom never paid much attention to me, and people would joke that it was the middle child syndrome.
I am the middle child.
Sasha is the older and beloved sister, while Jay is their pride and joy.
It was only when she realized how good I was in magic that she started paying attention to me.
From that day on, I had hoped and wished that she would neglect me again.
Because in her eyes, I was never good enough, no matter how hard I tried.
I will never be good enough in her eyes.
I got out of the bathroom, and my eyes landed on the envelope that was on the bed table. I just ignored it and laid on the bed, and played some music.
Matilda by Harry Styles started playing, and I just found myself sobbing.
This isn’t normal, right? Parents don’t tell their kids how worthless they are every chance they get. Parents love and protect their kids. They don’t burden them with responsibilities like I have been all this time.
I looked at the envelope, and Harry Styles was right. You can let it go.
I am going to let go of all this pain that has been inflicted on me.
I took my envelope and a small bag that had all the important documents.
I walked downstairs and found everyone sitting there waiting for dinner.
"Hey, kiddo, it’s a good thing you are here. Dinner is almost ready." Dad said, and I looked at him.
He married a woman from a powerful family, so she controls him. She is the one who wears the pants, and he is completely powerless against her. But I am not him, and I don’t have to spend the rest of my life with her.
"I am leaving." I announced, and they all looked at me confused.
"I am going to college in the city and not here in our town." I told them.
"What is this madness? Amazing, Jade. Now you want to make me the bad guy. You are leaving in the middle of the night, what about your responsibilities?" My mon asked me, and I frowned.
"What responsibilities? Last I checked, being the Coven leader is the responsibility of the oldest child or the boy. I am neither, so what responsibilities are you talking about?" I asked her.
"Go to your room now, we will talk about this in the morning." She said, and I stood firm.
"There is nothing to talk about. I have made my decision, and I am getting out of this place." I said, and she scoffed.
"If you go out of that door, then don’t ever come back. You are dead to me." She said, and I chuckled.
"I am dead her; I am already dead inside, and it is because of you. You made me consume the darkness of this coven at such a young age. I can’t sleep, and I can’t eat Mom." I said and then looked at Dad.
"You have heard it, right? I scream in my dreams." I said, and he nodded with tears in his eyes. He then hugged me, and I just started sobbing.
"I am sorry, Dad, but I am getting out of here." I said, and he smiled and kissed my forehead.
"Go, go as far away from here as you can, kiddo." He said and hugged me once again.
When he pulled away, my mother was looking at us with a frown. I looked at my siblings, and I smiled a little.
"Stay well." I said and then looked at my mother. "You too." I said and walked out.
The moment I stepped out of that house, it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.
I am free, and I am finally free from all those responsibilities and taunts.
I got to a late-night bus that was headed to the city.
What will life have in store for me now?
