They were careless in their escape. Cole had little trouble picking up their trail. He forced himself to slow his pursuit, not wishing his desire for vengeance to cloud his judgment. On constant alert, he found the sweeping flow of the verdant land easy to navigate. The many trees afforded plenty of shade from the sun, and he grew to enjoy the ride, despite the reason for him being there. In a tiny depression, he came across evidence of a camp. The remains of a rabbit lay amongst the blackened embers of the fire, and he recalled how the family of Shawnee had given him food not so very long ago. A stab of regret for not taking some provisions to them gave him pause to consider how, regardless of how pleasant this country was in comparison to his own homeland, life remained a struggle. He
