James Sinclair Oh, who are you fooling, Jimmy? You want her, and you want her so badly. The thought gnawed at me, relentless and taunting. My pulse quickened at the mere memory of her—those trembling lips, the way her body leaned ever so slightly toward mine, as if she was just waiting for me to close the distance. But that was the exact reason why I had walked away. I would have ruined everything if I forced her, crossed that line we couldn’t uncross. Slow and steady wins the race, I reminded myself. I needed to take a breather, to regain some semblance of control. With every step down the hall, I tried to force the tension from my muscles, but it clung to me, refusing to let go.
