Japheth Just before noon, Clover dropped a perfect calf, without any assistance, as usual. She stood in her stall, contentedly licking her newborn, her overzealous tongue sometimes knocking the little fella off balance so that he stumbled into the straw. He climbed right back to his feet, gaining confidence with every new round, and staggered back to his mother, nudging roughly around her udder until he found a teat to latch onto. His little tail swished happily as he sucked. “Good job, mama,” I told the cow, giving her a scratch between her eyes. There were some cows you couldn't approach when they had a new calf, but Clover trusted me. This was the sixth calf Clover had delivered on my farm.
