I was seated at the large dining table. My favorite omega, Eliza, had brought me a sandwich and milk. She cupped my cheek when she set down my food and turned my face to hers, "I was so worried about you pumpkin. I looked for you everywhere but I couldn't find you in the packhouse like you were supposed to be. I knew the alpha had instructed everyone to ensure your safety here."
I reached out and hugged her in response. Eliza was more like a mom to me than my own mother. From her I only felt love and care. And I knew it wasn't just because I was the alpha's daughter. Eliza went out of her way to spend time with me. She hugged me back tightly, resting her head on mine. We heard heavy footsteps coming down the hall and she let go of me, bowing her head as my father entered.
My eyes went wide when I turned to him. Silas was standing next to him. He had a bandage on his temple and he looked clean. He had on new clothes as well. His eyes met mine and a small smile crept on his lips. I couldn't help but smile back.
"Alpha," Eliza said with respect.
"Thank you Eliza for feeding Grace. Could you get Silas here the same? He'll be staying with us for the time being," my father told her.
"Of course alpha. Can I get anything for you?" she answered.
"No thank you Eliza. I've got to get back out there. We must make sure everyone has a safe place to lay their head tonight," he replied. My papa guided Silas to the chair across from me and he sat obediently.
"Grace, make sure you eat all that Eliza brings you. Same for you Silas," my papa instructed.
"Yes sir," Silas replied quietly, keeping his head bowed.
My father knelt down next to Silas and tilted his head up so he could see his face, "Silas, I'm so sorry for the loss of your parents. They were good people. Briar was a loyal warrior. Your mother was a saint. You will be ok, I promise."
Silas stared at my father and blinked his tears away. He nodded and whispered, "Thank you sir." Papa looked at Silas' face for a few more moments before he rose to his feet.
"I'll be back to check on you both this evening," he promised before heading out.
Eliza brought Silas his sandwich and milk. He thanked her but just stared at the food. Eliza pulled out the chair next to him and sat down, "Silas," she said so softly. He slowly lifted his face to her. "Do you think you can eat a few bites? I know you probably don't feel hungry but trust me, your body needs it."
Silas gazed into her eyes and I saw Eliza's eyes fill with tears, "I.....I'm afraid I'll throw up," he said weakly. "I-I can't stop thinking about my mother."
I watched them from across the table, feeling my own stomach twisting into a knot. I couldn't stop thinking about all the death I had seen today either. I sipped my milk but I hadn't touched my sandwich either.
Eliza wiped the tears off her cheeks, "Silas, can I hug you?" she asked, her voice cracking.
He looked at her uncertainly at first but slowly nodded. Eliza immediately wrapped him in a warm hug and I saw him squeeze her tightly. His shoulders shook slightly but I could not hear him crying. Eliza kissed his head and whispered something in his ear. She gently rocked him side to side. She didn't let go of him and he didn't let go of her. She kissed his head again and told him something so softly I couldn't hear.
Part of me was jealous that my Eliza was comforting him. But I chastised myself for being so selfish. Eliza gave the best hugs. She could make any bad day better. If anyone needed Eliza tonight, it was the boy with the beautiful eyes. A few moments later, I could tell that Silas had fallen asleep in her arms.
"Grace," she whispered to me. I looked up at her expectantly. "Go into the kitchen and find Mary. Ask her to come speak to me please."
I nodded and did as she asked. Mary was leaning on the counter in our humongous kitchen with her head in her hands. I quietly approached her and tapped her shoulder.
She jumped up but then smiled at me. I could tell she had been crying, "Princess Grace, can I help you dear?"
"Eliza sent me to get you. She asked you to come speak with her. She's in the dining room," I told her. Worry seemed to cross her face and she followed me back out. When she saw Eliza holding onto to Silas she rushed over. She knelt by her side.
"Silas," Mary breathed, her hands shaking as she gently touched his head. "How is he here? I was told he was missing. My sister.....Fae.... is she....?"
My eyes widened. Silas was Mary's nephew. This was why my father was so angry that my mother didn't bring Silas with the other children. He did have family who could care for him.
Eliza shook her head and Mary covered her mouth as she choked back a sob, "I had hoped...and Briar?..."
"I'm so sorry Mary," Eliza whispered. She leaned her head onto Mary's to try to comfort her.
Mary took a few deep breaths, trying to compose herself, "I'll take Silas back to my room. He must be exhausted. How did he get here?"
"The alpha brought him," Eliza told her. Mary furrowed her brow.
"Actually my mother found him," I spoke up. "She told me she has a special job for him."
All the color drained from Mary's face and Eliza looked the same.
"No," Mary said in panic. "Sarai cannot have him. Fae had to fight so hard to keep Silas safe from her. They would never forgive me if she finally got her hands on him."
A shiver ran through me. Silas needed to be kept safe from my mother?
"We will plead with the alpha," Eliza told her quickly. "He will make sure Silas stays with you. You're his family. Surely he knows why Sarai wants the boy. He wouldn't stand for it. Quickly now, let's get Silas to your room before the Luna returns."
Eliza gently handed Silas over to Mary, trying not to wake him but the slightest movement and he jolted awake. He woke up ready to fight, his eyes wild with fear as he thrashed.
"Silas! Silas! You're safe!" Mary cried hugging him to her body.
When Silas realized he was in his aunt's arms his wall of bravado shattered. He sobbed loudly in her arms, shaking. I felt tears sting my own eyes listening to his mournful cries. We all heard the sound of a door opening and slamming, then the click of heels quickly making their way down the hall.
Eliza jumped up, "Hurry Mary take him to your room. She's coming."
"Shhhh Silas," Mary tried to quiet him. "We have to move. Quietly now."
Mary helped him to his feet and took his hand. He was struggling to catch his breath, hiccuping while he tried to stop his sorrowful crying. She rushed him through the kitchen just as my mother entered the dining room. I quickly wiped the tears from my eyes.
"Evening, my Luna, can I get you something to eat?" Eliza said quickly bowing.
My mother eyed the chair pushed out next to Eliza and the untouched milk and sandwich. Her eyes narrowed, "Where is he?" she asked darkly.
"Ma'am?" Eliza asked, lifting her head.
My mother's head snapped toward the kitchen and stormed away.
"Luna!" Eliza called, following her. I sat motionless in my chair, my heart racing. I clutched the sides of my chair anxiously. I jumped when I heard the sound of a door slamming followed by a woman wailing.... and the sound of a boy's desperate screams. I wanted to run to my room to hide but I was frozen to my seat.
My mother stomped through the dining room, dragging Silas by the arm as he screamed for his aunt who was running after them.
"Sarai!" Mary shouted angrily. "He is not yours! He never was and never will be!"
My mother froze, keeping her back to Mary. Silas was on his knees, his arm yanked uncomfortably up and backward. He was sobbing, his chest heaving hard.
"You will never have my name on your tongue or I will have it cut out" my mother Said in a deep, dark tone. "I am Luna of this pack and this is my fated mate's pup. I have more right to him than you!"
Then she dragged Silas away, kicking and screaming. Mary started to chase after them but Eliza stopped her.
"Eliza she can't! She can't take him! She's insane! My poor sister was tortured by her, forever in fear that she'd take her baby! Silas!!Silas!!" Mary screamed trying to get out of Eliza's arms.
"Grace!" my mother shouted from farther into the pack house and I flinched. My heart was pounding out of my chest. "To your room!"
I slipped out of my chair, feeling very unsteady on my feet as I hesitantly made my way out of the dining room.
"Grace," Eliza called to me softly. "You'll be ok. Just do whatever she says alright? I'll come check on you as soon as I can."
I nodded as I swallowed the fear in my throat and made my feet move toward my room.
