Chapter Four

1822 Words
Daxton’s POV I’m sat in a booth at the Edge, the other single players are crowded around me and a collection of women in very little clothing are draped over various members of the team, giggling loudly. A brunette is pressed up against my side, tracing her fingers over my shirt, playing with the buttons as I ignore her, flicking at the edge of the label on the one beer I’m allowing myself tonight. I don’t tend to drink at all during the season but after my conversation with Coach, I could do with one. ‘Do you want to go somewhere and have a little fun?’ the brunette whispers in my ear, rubbing her t**s against my arm in what I assume was supposed to be a seductive way but my d**k couldn’t be any less interested. I shrug her off, ignoring her yelp of shock, ‘I’m out’ I say to the boys as I shove out of the booth to my feet. ‘Dude! Come on! It’s still early’ Campbell groans back at me, ‘get another beer and enjoy the entertainment.’ He smirks widely as he grabs the ass of the red head beside me, looking at me as if I should high five him or something for his witty conversation. ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it tonight’ I reply, grabbing my wallet out of my back pocket and pulling out a few dollars to chuck on the table for the waitress who brought me my drink. ‘When did you turn into an old man’ Campbell mutters, eyeing me and I feel that familiar feeling in my gut, the one that tells me I need to shut this guy up, prove I’m the life of the party that normally leads me. The same damn feeling that had me in the Coach’s office being shown why my dreams are in jeopardy of going down the drain. I squash the urge down and just shrug, forcing a grin, ‘dunno mate, probably the same time that I realised swapping girls with my mates isn’t something to brag about’ I reply before giving him a one finger salute and walking away. I shrug on my jacket and step outside, the air still warm despite the hour, and head toward my truck. She is my one true love, faithful, sleek and a body to cry over, my truck is ready to go when I am, doesn’t demand anything from me and other than some new tires and a service, doesn’t expect me to spend all my money on her to show her that I love her. Yeah, my truck is the perfect woman and a smile plays at the corner of my lips as I press the fob to unlock the doors and climb in behind the wheel. ‘Hey girl’ I mutter, running my palms over her steering wheel, ‘shall we head home?’ Turning the key, the engine comes to life as if she’s saying, ‘hell yeah, let’s go!’ Throwing the vehicle into drive, I am about to pull away when my phone rings, seeing my sister’s name, I press accept and slowly inch out of my parking space, maneuvering between the rows of cars as I say, ‘hey sis!’ ‘Hey, big brother’ my twin sister’s voice says through the speakers of my truck, ‘did I catch you at a bad time? Are you out with the boys? I don’t hear any music or giggling.’ She says the word giggling with a hint of derision, I know how my sister feels about me and my women, it’s one of our many differences. At five foot ten, with her auburn hair and green eyes, she’s the complete opposite of me. She is also in a committed relationship with my college best friend, and they even have a kid! Once upon a time, Declan was just like me, love em and leave em, never hang around too long for anyone to catch feelings. Then he meets my sister and I swear the guy became completely different overnight! I didn’t want my sister with someone like Dec, but she didn’t care, and I have to say, the guy dotes on her. There isn’t another woman in the world now as far as Declan Connors is concerned and I’m fully expecting a ring on my sister’s finger in the very near future. ‘I just left the bar’ I reply to her question, ‘wasn’t feeling the atmosphere.’ ‘Alone?’ I chuckle at the sharpness of her tone; my sister wants me to find love. I shudder in revulsion, since Denver came along, she feels like I’m missing out and has made it her mission to find me that all illusive, mythical being known to all love struck teenagers as ‘the one’. I shake my head in amusement, there is no one for me, I tried the whole falling in love thing once before and she almost destroyed my sister’s life. With that, she also completely destroyed my belief in happily ever after. Sure, Declan and Dakota are bound for till death do us part, but they are the anomaly in this world, the rest of us are only heading for heartbreak and fighting over our assets with greedy lawyers beside us. ‘Yes alone’ I laugh, ‘I don’t always pick someone up you know, I can go home alone.’ My sister snorts derisively, ‘please, I’m surprised there isn’t some ball chaser sitting beside you sucking on your neck like a Vampire’ she retorts. ‘Did you say you wanted your neck sucked?’ comes my best friend’s voice before I hear the unmistakable sound of Declan nibbling on my sister, Yuck! ‘Umm please refrain from mauling my sister while I’m listening!’ I protest, ‘I do not need to know about how you do the nasty with her.’ Declan laughs, ‘how do you think we made your nephew?’ he questions cockily. ‘Immaculate conception’ I reply immediately, ‘my sister has never had s*x Dec and she never will.’ The guy on the end of the phone snorts with laughter, ‘oh she’s far from a virgin’ he growls, ‘I just have to raise an eyebrow and . . . ‘ ‘OK, let's just end that conversation right there’ I interrupt, thankful I did not decide to eat at the bar as it would no doubt be returning to visit me again. I steer the conversation to safer grounds, ‘so to what do I owe the pleasure of a phone call from my favourite little sister?’ I ask. Dakota laughs, ‘I’m your only sister’ she replies in amusement, ‘I don’t have any competition.’ ‘True’ I agree, ‘which also makes me your favourite brother’ I add with a smirk. ‘Hmm’ Kota hums, pretending to think about it, ‘well actually, Declan has joined one of those big brother schemes? And his little brother is pretty damn cute so I think that you might have been replaced.’ I growl playfully, ‘who is this kid?’ I demand, ‘I’ll beat him for trying to muscle in on my sister’s love.’ My sister laughs louder, ‘he’s six Dax’ she chides me, ‘you can’t beat up a six year old.’ ‘I can if he’s trying to take my place as favourite brother’ I reply simply. ‘He better not be gunning for favourite uncle either, or we really will have problems.’ ‘Who said you were favourite uncle?’ Declan chimes in again, ‘Wade is his favourite.’ I huff loudly, ‘he’s not even a real uncle!’ I protest, ‘I’m the only blood related uncle that makes me favourite by default!’ ‘Whatever dude’ my best friend replies, ‘Wade bought him one of those swinging chair things that rocks him to sleep, right now he’s my favourite uncle too, that thing is a lifesaver!’ I roll my eyes, pfft, I bought the kid a basketball hoop and put it up on their driveway, nothing is cooler than that. OK he’s only a baby, but he’ll thank me when he’s older. ‘I spoke to Lilian earlier’ my sister’s word sucker punch me, if there is one name that can get under my skin, it’s the name of my little sister’s best friend. ‘Oh really?’ I force out, gripping the steering wheel tightly as I navigate the late night traffic. ‘Yeah, she’s doing good, just in case you were wondering.’ I can hear the knowing sound in her voice. ‘No, not particularly’ I retort, liar, liar pants on fire! ‘I haven’t seen her since the wedding, did she land that job she was after?’ Dakota sighs, ‘no, it’s a tough market to get into, plus she broke up with that Evan guy’ she subtley slides into the conversation. I can’t help the pleasure that knowledge brings to me, Evan the dickwad as I like to refer to him, was a douche, no way he could handle a girl like Lilian, hell, I doubt he could handle himself without a manual. ‘Yeah, well, I’m sure “the one” will fall into her lap one day’ I respond, my voice dripping with sarcasm. ‘I think he might’ Dakota replies, and her happiness makes my stomach sour. ‘Oh? Someone sniffing around her?’ I ask, trying to come off as nonchalant. ‘Sniffing around her?’ my sister huffs, ‘she isn’t a dog Dax, she’s a beautiful woman and the guy who nabs her is going to be one lucky son of a bitch.’ I nod, because I can’t argue with my sister on that, it’s true, whoever lands Lilian Sanchez will hit the jackpot. Clearing her throat, Dakota continues, ‘she has prospects, yes’ she murmurs, ‘I just hope that she ends up with a guy who will respect her and treat her right.’ I swallow thickly, trying to push the image of Lilian walking down an aisle toward some asshole out of my mind. Lilian Sanchez made it very clear years ago that I am not her type, she doesn’t do casual and she sure as hell doesn’t want anything to do with me. It’s a good thing too, because I’m not the happily ever after type, at least when she finds her ‘one’ it’ll be miles and miles away from me. ‘Sorry sis but I gotta go’ I snap out slightly more harshly that I intended, my finger reaching for the button to end the call. ‘Dax wait!’ Dakota calls out but I cut her off, weaving through blaring traffic as I take a sharp right heading back toward the centre of the city and all the night clubs, suddenly I’m in the mood to get so drunk I can’t remember my own name.
