Jack had never met a soldier with such a penetrating gaze. Havelock"s eyes were bright and hard and perceptive. Jack knew that General Henry Havelock was in his early sixties and this was his first independent command in a career which spanned Burma, Gwalior, Afghanistan, Persia and the Punjab. A fighting man, then, Jack thought. Havelock"s North-East accent was hidden behind his curt military sentences while his lack of inches compared to Jack"s nearly six feet tall was immaterial.
