CHAPTER TWENTY Remi gazed at the ivory pyxis, feeling something akin to awe. Could this really contain the cryptex? She stood in the temporary exhibition space of the High Museum, up on the first floor just above the entrance hall. Around her were some of the greatest works of art ever made in ivory. To her right was the tiny Venus of Brassempouy, only the size of her thumb and which at 23,000 years old was one of the oldest representations of a human face. To her left was an entire elephant tusk from 19th century Congo with hunting and trading scenes carved in bas-relief. Beyond were displayed more treasures from all parts of the globe and all periods of history. But Remi had eyes for only one display case.
