Chapter 10: Power

-Cara- “Your eyes... How is it that I can look into them when no one else can?” I asked, meeting his blood-red eyes. “I thought you wanted to discuss planning an attack on my father,” Dean replied, a small smile playing on his lips. Yes, I had called him here to discuss the planning, but my thoughts had drifted to his eyes. I couldn’t help but keep staring at them. “Not that I mind my mate looking so intensely at me,” he added. I shook my head and turned away. How dare he speak to me like that? And why did it make my heart race? “Um, aren’t cursed children supposed to make people see their worst nightmares through their eyes?” I inquired. “We are,” he said, still smiling that infuriating smile. “Then why can’t I see anything?” “What is it you want to see?” I growled softly. He was toying with me! Did he think I wouldn’t hurt him just because we were mates? Dean chuckled lightly and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Our mates are immune. My mother, my father’s mate, can look into my eyes, as can my sister, who is also a cursed child. Our eyes don’t work on other cursed children,” he explained. I nodded, listening intently. Interesting, I thought, as I found myself drawn to him. His smile grew wider the longer I stared. It wasn’t a bad smile... Damn it! Focus. I had to remember he was a male and the son of an alpha, not to be trusted. “Let us—” Before I could continue, Dean stood up, placing his large hands on the desk between us and leaning even closer. His imposing presence cast a shadow over me, making me feel smaller. I wasn’t scared, just... nervous. A male was making me nervous? “I think your eyes are very beautiful, like the forest. And I love the forest,” he said in a dark, low voice. Where did all the oxygen go? Had it gotten hotter in here? I pushed my chair back to create more distance between us. His amusement was evident. He knew he had power over me, which only fueled my frustration. I cleared my throat, trying to regain my composure, and then gestured toward his seat. “Sit down.” It wasn’t a request, and he understood that. Nevertheless, he made a show of slowly sitting back and making himself comfortable. “We might be mates, but that doesn’t mean I want anything to do with you. So, no comments about my eyes,” I said firmly. “But you can comment on mine?” he challenged. “I was just curious why they weren’t working on me,” I sneered. “Admit it, little mate, you enjoy looking at both me and my eyes.” I growled threateningly, but it only seemed to excite him more. “Careful,” he warned. “Don’t force me to show you who’s the alpha here.” What did he just say? I rose from my chair, slamming my hands onto the desk. This was the kind of arrogance you got from males—dominance, entitlement, stupidity! “Speak to me like that again, and I’ll show you who the luna is! I don’t care if you’re born to be an alpha. I’ve earned my own power, and I’m not afraid to use it. Not even against you!” Dean rose from his chair with an air of indifference. He stepped forward, positioning himself directly in front of me, and leaned down until we were at eye-level. “Then use it,” he said, grabbing my chin and pulling me closer. “Show me your power. Show me you can handle me.” I was stunned. His warm fingers were touching my chin gently yet with a firm pressure. One finger traced over my jaw, sending shivers down my spine. I had never experienced anything like this before! I should have pulled away, but I didn’t. Instead, I was mesmerized by his intense, glowing red eyes and the grip on my chin that drew me in closer.
