The staff Halloween party was one of those things you had to go to, whether you wanted to or not. Ellie had been organizing it for months, with decorations and full catering and dance music. Plenty of drink, including a rich, fruity punch. Ellie said Vic had helped her make it—he’d been pretty generous with the alcohol donations, too. We didn't hold it at our branch, of course, because the bright, pagan streamers might have offended our customers. Instead, we were allowed full run of the staff rooms at the local Head Office. That was where the company hosted general training, and Vic had spent a couple of months there recently due to his promotion.
