CHAPTER 4
GAURAV
After two hours in the air...
Unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to sleep. It was nothing new. I seldom sleep inside a plane. It could happen only when I was either dead drunk or dead-tired.
Even if I was irked and extremely mad earlier, I couldn't bring myself to sleep.
Not to mention that it was not my plane. I never feel comfortable in a commercial plane.
I glanced at the lady at my side with unsympathetic eyes, and my blood boiled once again.
She was a rude one. No manners!. She didn't even utter a word to apologize again or attempt to start a conversation to lessen the friction between us. As if nothing happened earlier, and she manages to sleep comfortably.
Was she used to doing that?
Hah! That wasn't a small matter; she should initiate conversation and not totally disregard it.
How could she sleep in such a situation? I have never met a lady with such a thick face in my life!
She doesn't know who I am and what I could do with such impertinence? AND the likes of her was just a "ma petite" (little flea) for me that I could easily smack!
Hah! I released a deep sigh.
But what was I doing wasting time, getting mad at her?
I should not concern myself with trivial matters. It already happened. Nothing could change that. It was good that I was brought up well. Otherwise, I could have requested for her transfer to another seat and away from me.
I keep on referring to my commendable upbringing because that was the only reason I handled the detestable situation in silence. Even if I burn in anger inside, I always keep my mouth shut. My father once told me that I have a sharp tongue. That was why I needed to watch my words all the time. Well, he was so right. If I allowed myself to talk s**t earlier, this lady might be DEAD by now.
I heaved another deep sigh and decided not to think of the lady anymore.
I have an important business transaction later, and THAT should be the focus of my attention.
Our business grew exponentially, but I'm in dire need of hiring more people to help me with the task. I couldn’t be traveling around the world without rest. I want to stay in one place and let my people travel.
The constant travels for the last three years were tiresome. I feel stressed now. It might be the reason why I'm grumpy and surly. If the stressful travels wouldn't end soon...I'll be older than my Dad!
My mother kept reminding me to refrain from following in my Dad's footsteps. He married her at 36. Therefore, I'm their only child. I need to find a wife and settle down soon, she said.
Unfortunately, she wouldn't vote for my girlfriend, from the start she didn't like her.
I couldn't agree with her more. Selina was hardly a wife material. Our lifestyle and character were so different. I was also getting tired of her socializing. I don't find contentment in going to parties and social events every opportunity it presents itself, which Selina likes the most.
I'm a technical guy, and I like silence. My mind works better in peace. I miss the days when my work was equivalent to playing. I miss technology and what I could do about it.
I set up my own company and earned a lot from it when a competitor acquired it because I like my life to be full of ease.
But what have I turned out to be?
I shook my head in frustration.
My life right now was far from the easy life I wanted for myself!
My Dad had to retire, and I have no recourse but to manage our family business.
I have no wish to turn myself into a business slave, but I am trapped. I found myself in an entirely different world!
My destiny was my Dad's world and not mine, therefore goodbye Silicon Valley.
Suddenly,
My deep thought was interrupted by a sound...
What was that I heard? Was it a snore?
Damn it!
I turned my head towards the direction of the lady.
Crap!
The ill-mannered lady was snoring loudly?! What the heck! So unladylike.
I shook my head repeatedly in disgust!
How could she sleep deeply while riding an aircraft?
I never met anyone like her.
So disgusting!
While I looked at her, unexpectedly, she kicked the blanket she used to cover herself with, and it’s now on the floor. She was facing the wall, and her posture emphasized her curvy figure since she’s leaning on her side. And why was she wearing shorts?!
It now exposed her long unblemished legs.
Why wear shorts on her way to an international destination? No one in their right mind would do that.
She’s nuts!
Singapore was not exactly a tropical country. It could be a little cold at night. Who told her that wearing shorts was the smartest thing to do during this season?
She’s so ignorant!
I haven't recovered from my shock all of a sudden...
BANG! BLAG! BANG! BOOM!
The impact almost threw me out of my seat. If not for the seatbelt I was wearing, I might bump myself on the side.
Crap!
What was that impact all about?
And Ohhh! They dropped the oxygen mask!
The air pressure was strong.
Things were flying around, and several flight attendants were running all over the place.
Then I heard the announcement...
"Mayday! Mayday! Our airplane was hit! We are going down!"
The pilot repeated the announcement several times.
The flight attendant's alarmed face showed up at the door of our compartment.
"Sir and Ma'am, please put on the emergency vest and follow me at the emergency exit! We will open the emergency doors!"
The flight attendant screamed at us, and even she was in a panic.
Heavens, the plane will explode?!?
Shit! s**t! s**t!
What’s going on?
I immediately grabbed the emergency vest and followed the attendant towards the emergency door. Shortly, they opened the door—the passengers' line-up to exit the door and started to jump one after the other.
Suddenly...
As if someone was calling me...
I turned in the direction of the compartment I vacated, and I saw the ill-mannered lady in a total panic. She couldn’t release herself from the seat belt, and she was calling for help.
I am not sure why...but...
I found myself going back to the compartment and helping her free herself from the seatbelt.
There was no time to think about matters, and the plane would explode at any minute.
If we can’t jump out of the plane, we will surely die when the plane explodes.
I grabbed her hand and hurriedly proceeded to the emergency door.
The air pressure pushed us back, but I used all my strength to bring us closer to the door...
The lady was too lost, and she didn’t know what to do. I grabbed her body to hold her firmly. I locked my arms around her and proceeded to the emergency door.
"Stop screaming! Hold me tight! Don't let go. No matter what happens, keep your hands around my waist." I yelled at her and firmly tucked her hands on my waist.
Then I encircled my hands around her.
"Remember, don't let go!"
Then we jumped...and let our bodies glide through the air...
I briefly uttered...
"Oh, God save us!"
We are falling together really fast as if our bodies were weightless.
