~SAPPHIRE~
“Are we having a threesome?” I asked Gavin the minute we stepped into the dimly lit room, and my eyes caught sight of a figure in our bed. The question sounded ridiculous… even to me, but I had to know and understand what was going on here.
Gavin laughed, and I could sense a bit of amusement from him. “Oh, Sapphire,” he cupped my face, staring down at me, his smile suddenly replaced with a frown, a cold one. “You're going to watch me f**k her. That would be my birthday gift to you to compensate you for not getting your wolf again.”
I stared at him, my expression unreadable. Gavin was fond of jokes, so it's only normal that he was playing a joke on me right now. He wouldn't be ruthless to the extent of using my third failed shift against me, right?
“What are you talking about?” I asked, trying my best to remain as calm as possible. My eyes darted to the figure in bed, who laid still without moving. I sort of wondered who the person was and how much Gavin must have paid her to act with him.
Gavin held my hand, his voice taking on an icy tone. “What I’m talking about is that I no longer see you as worthy of being my mate anymore,” he revealed, and I felt all the light bulbs in my head go off.
“W-what?” I asked, feeling like this was some kind of joke. “You aren’t being serious, right? This is one of the pranks you usually pull on me, right?” I forced a smile even though my heart was frantically beating in my chest, threatening to burst its way out.
Gavin laughed hysterically. “Joke?” he snapped. “You call this a joke? Sapphire, I have endured and put up with you for two f*****g years!” he ruffled his hair with a sigh. “When you didn’t get your wolf two years ago after turning eighteen, I thought it was just a normal thing since we became mates. I put up with you until you were nineteen, yet nothing. Now you clocked twenty yesterday — I expected something nice only for you to disappoint me yet again.”
“But it’s not my fault,” I muttered, trying to sound calm and collected. “I have no idea why I can’t get my wolf. You asked me to accept my fate yesterday, Gavin. You said you still loved me—”
“I lied!” he snapped at me, his expression hardening. “I’ve been lying to you all these years. I never wanted you as a mate even though we used to be friends before we got mated that unfortunate night. The only reason I pretended to love and care for you was because you had the knowledge and the ability to make me the next Alpha after my father,”
My eyes widened at the revelation, but I shook my head, refusing to believe it.
“Why do you think I always brought every documents my father gave me to handle to you, huh? Back in school, you were top of the class. You knew everything. I knew you’ve always loved me, and you probably were the happiest when we got mated, but jokes on you, I was only using you,” he chuckled. “Now that I’ve used you to the very last drop, I want to throw you away like the trash you are!”
I felt like I had been punched in the gut. I couldn’t believe that I’d been living a lie for two years. I did all I could to make him gain favor in the eyes of the Alpha because I loved him and knew that if he got crowned as the next in line to the throne, I would be his Luna.
I sacrificed all I could to help him secure that spot and this is how he repays me?
I bit back a sob, feeling like I was about to crumble into pieces. “Gavin, please,” I begged. “This is unfair. You know I gave you my everything. I have no idea why I can’t shift but—”
“Save your breath,” Gavin cut me off, his face scrunched up in disgust. “If you can’t shift, you’re of no use to me. And that’s why I had to get myself a new mate,” he pointed to the figure lying on the bed.
My eyes flew to the figure, who laid there as if waiting to be summoned.
“Before I introduce my new mate to you,” he began, a smile spreading across his face. “I need to make sure you don’t get aggressive and ruin my chances,” he snapped his fingers and three huge men emerged from the shadows.
“What is the meaning of all this?” I demanded, my fear giving way to anger. But before I could react, one of the men grabbed my arms while the others held my legs. They carried me to the chair at the side of the room, tying me tightly to it.
“Gavin,” I yelled, fighting against the ropes binding me to the chair. “You don’t need to do this!”
Gavin laughed, “Oh, but I do,”
I struggled against the ropes but couldn’t break free. Why the heck was he doing this?
“Sophia, come meet Sapphire,” Gavin said, his voice dripping with arrogance. “Sapphire, meet Sophia. She is everything you’re not — beautiful, powerful, and of course, able to shift into her wolf form,” he smirked at me before turning to… Sophia? “And Sophia, meet my old mate, the non-shifter Sapphire,”
Sophia sat up and turned to look at me, and I recognized her face immediately. It was Camille, my best friend.
Gavin burst into a fit of laughter — a cold, mocking laughter that made my chest churn with hurt. “Oh, did I say Sophia?” he laughed again, wrapping his arms around her waist. “I meant Camille, your best friend who is a million times better than you.”
I could feel my heart plummet to my stomach as the tears I had been fighting to hold streamed down my cheeks. Camille, the one I’d confided in about my fears of not being able to shift.
The one who’d held my hand and told me Gavin loved me, that we would figure things out together. The one who'd been here the whole time, was waiting for the moment Gavin would discard me like a used toy. My fists clenched as I watched them exchange a passionate kiss.
Camille smiled down at me. “Sorry you had to find out this way, bestie,” she laughed hysterically. “We would have told you sooner…um…like a year ago, but my darling Gavin needed your brains to win his father’s approval. Now that we’ve gotten what we wanted and Gavin will be announced as the next Alpha in three days, we have no use for you anymore, non-shifter.”
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I looked from Gavin to Camille, the girl I'd considered my best friend, and felt an overwhelming sense of pain and betrayal.
“Let me go!” I snapped, not wanting to spend any more seconds with these two animals.
“Of course,” Gavin crouched down to my level and roughly lifted my head to look into his eyes. “Sapphire, let’s make this quick and painless, shall we?”
No one needed to tell me what was coming next. I shut my eyes tight as I braced myself for his next words.
“I, Gavin Thane, reject you, Sapphire Hearth as my mate. From this moment on, the mate bond is broken. You are nothing to me!”
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I felt my heart being ripped into two. What followed was emptiness and void, and it angered me so much that I was tied here, restricted from punching him in the face.
I didn’t want to cry but my tears wouldn’t stop falling. He had shown himself as a jerk, and shouldn’t be worth my tears, but why wouldn’t the f*****g tears stop falling already?
I wanted to scream, wanted to yell my lungs out, but I couldn’t. My heart was so heavy that it threatened to fall out of my chest, but all I could do was just sit there and watch Gavin kiss Camille with so much passion after brutally rejecting me.
“Watch me make love to my soon-to-be Luna, Sapphire non-shifter!” he mocked as their kisses became more intense.
I wondered why he still wanted me to watch this painful scene even after rejecting me. He could have just let me go. My chest heaved in anger as I couldn’t bear the sight in front of me.
I was boiling with so much rage that all I could see was red. In a burst of anger, I let out a low, guttural growl.
Gavin and Camille stopped what they were doing, their eyes widening in shock as they watched me. My muscles tensed as a primal force surged through my body. I had no idea what I was feeling, but I knew it was something I hadn’t felt before.
Without warning, I tore at the ropes that bound me and with a loud snap, the ropes gave way. The chair beneath me shattered, the sound of splintering wood filling the room.
I rose from the mess like a demon who had been unleashed, brushing my red hair away from my face. My eyes were wild and fierce, staring straight at the two of them.
“You think you can just toss me aside like garbage?” I seethed, my voice heavy with contempt. “You think you can use me and then discard me like I'm nothing? You have another thing coming, Gavin!” I yelled, my angry face fixed on them.
“You want to become the next Alpha?” I chuckled. “Over my dead body will that happen!”
Gavin stood to his feet, his eyes boring into mine. “Quit pretending to be fierce because of this stupid little stunt you just pulled,” he scoffed. “You can do nothing!”
I gave a smile, a smile only I knew how dangerous it was, because the devil will have to sit and take notes while I get my revenge.
I sneered at Gavin. “Watch me burn your world to ashes.”
