Alice  There were no sweet goodbyes this time.  “I’ll walk myself in, thanks,” I said icily as I slid out of the jeep.  I felt miserable, beyond miserable.  George did not get out.  He was gripping the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles were turning white, and his face was stony and expressionless.  Gillian was slumped in the back seat, her face crumpled and blotchy.    Ugh.  I stomped up the stairs with more force than necessary, and fumbled with my keys.  Jeezus, I couldn’t even open my front door without being reminded of them.  Instead of being comforted by my heavy door, all I could do was slam it behind me... which I’m sure my neighbors appreciated, since it was only three in the morning.  I slid the deadbolt in place and leaned my forehead against the cool wood.     The flo
