Chapter 5: The Tower Secrets

As we enter his hut, the man offers to sit down while he prepares some drinks for me. I declined at first but the man insisted as he said he hasn’t had a lot of people for years. So with that, I just let it go…
A few minutes later, he handed me a cup of water as I began to ask him questions regarding this weird place.
“What actually is this place, I heard that this place is called the tower? Am I right about that... ”
“You’re right, this place is indeed called the tower, and this where the dead people come into.”
“So we’re really dead?”
“I know it’s kinda hard to accept that fact, the same goes with me when I heard about this for the first time. But all of that was true, we’re already dead.”
“Okay, but how can you know about this kind of stuff?”
“All of this information was passed down to one another but a few years back, that system had changed and because of that people like you will not know about the tower info anymore.”
“What do you mean by the system… and you mention that it has changed?”
“It’s basically a system which a newcomer will get to learn from someone that has lived in the tower for quite a long time. But like I said, it has changed because there’s not a lot of monsters left in the tower.”
“Wait! What was the monster connection towards the system… I listen to everything you said and I can’t relate the monsters could have done anything to change the system of the tower entirely.”
“Monsters are a necessity for us to be able to continue to live in the tower.”
“We need monsters to live? So the food source is mainly coming from monsters...”
“No, I think you got it wrong. We don’t eat monsters, let me explain to you the truth of this world. To stay in this tower, we need to kill monsters. As it gives us more time to prolong our existence in this tower if we run out of time. We would simply vanish from here.”
“I still do not understand the relation between the system and the monsters. And of course what you said just now.”
Hearing what the man said, it just made me even more confused than before. It seems that there’s a lot of secrets in the tower that I had not known yet.
“Let see, how do I need to make sure you understand about the system in this tower…” He then took a sip of water before he started to explain. “You see, in this tower. We couldn’t live that long, we’re given only 10 years to exist in the tower. If we had reached that time limit, we would simply vanish as I said before. But there’s a way for us to not vanish, it was for us to kill monsters in the tower.”
“I’m getting the gist of it now, but still why was the system changed. I see that there’s no relation between the system and the monsters.”
“Actually there is… because we hunted down monsters a lot these past years. The monsters in the tower had become lessened in the tower and it’s really hard to find any monsters anymore...”
“Still there’s no relation about-”
“Could you let me finish first?”
“Okay, sorry about that.”
“Where were we… Oh! Because the harder people find monsters, they become more desperate to prolong their existence and they decide to kill a newcomer like you guys just to gain more time. To avoid that, the system about teachings the newcomers about the tower had changed.”
“What! Killing people can also prolong one existence!?”
“Yes it does and one could say that it’s much better than killing monsters. So that’s why you should be careful around other people that you have met, you never know what their intention was... ”
“So should I be wary of you then, you’re basically a person that I never met before.”
“You don’t need to feel that way towards me if I had any ill intention towards you. I could just kill you on the spot and wouldn’t bother to explain this kind of stuff to you.”
“You’re right, you could just kill me back then.”
“It's just that I need you to be careful around people, don’t easily trust them.”
“Sure but may I ask, why you didn’t want to kill me. Didn't you say it for yourself that it is much easier to kill a newcomer like us instead of killing down monsters?”
“Well, I just don’t like it. Killing people isn’t something that I like that much, besides I don’t care that much if I disappeared… As it’s impossible to reach Elysium anyway.”
“Elysium?”
“Oh! I forgot to tell you the objective why we’re in this tower in the first place… It was for us to reach Elysium, the place where we could finally rest.”
“So we had an objective, how do we reach Elysium then?”
“If I had known the answer, I would surely tell you but I don’t. Not a single person in this tower knows how to reach Elysium yet. If someone already knows the way, people would definitely leave this tower and go to Elysium.”
“That’s means no one had reached Elysium yet?”
“You’re right, no one has ever gone there before. So that’s why I can’t say how to reach that place... So do you have any questions left regarding the tower?”
“I do, it’s about our lost memories when we were alive. Will it is lost forever or could I recover it again?”
“About that, it’s hard to say as there’s a rumor about people gaining their memories back but for me… I would say that impossible, there’s no way for us to get back the memory that had been lost.”
“Okay then, so we basically start anew in this tower…”
“Yup, so I think the first step you need to do was to get yourself a name. I know that you don't even remember your name right?”
