Another eventful two years soon passed by and brought with it more changes in the colony. Governor Bligh, who’d been released a year earlier on the promise of returning to England, had journeyed instead to Van Diemen’s Land to rally support and when this failed, he returned to Sydney Town. The biggest news of all was the new governor, Governor Macquarie, who’d only recently, in January that year, taken over the running of the colony from the military corps, had announced all land grants and convictions during the past two years of illegal government were null and void. Naturally this overjoyed some members of the colony, while angering others.
Closer to home, Thomas had run off not six months prior to the news of the new government. Jasper had immediately ridden into Parramatt
