Maddy came bounding down the stairs and flung herself at me, wrapping her arms around my neck. I lifted her up, laughing happily at such a warm welcome. Evan stood a bit further away, not looking pleased that his mate was touching someone else.
The only reason he didn’t tear me apart was because I was family. So, he could just barely tolerate this. He wasn’t thrilled about it, though, and it showed clearly.
When Maddy finally let go, he wrapped a possessive arm around her and drew her close. She giggled happily and kissed his cheek, which softened the big, dark alpha as he smiled down at his mate. I hoped Cecilia and I could be like that someday, but my little beta was tough to crack.
