~Thomas~
I am feeling a little taller and a bit beefier. Almost like I went to the gym and paid the first installment for muscles. Well, I just hope they don’t take them back, I think to myself running out of the alleyway and into the square.
Idiot 1 “Yeah, she didn’t. She probably made him roll over and sit.”
He walks past me laughing.
Idiot 2 “Do you think we should tell Xavier the little mutt spent the night in her chambers?”
Idiot 1 “What and have Xavier bite my head off? Are you insane! You are very welcome to tell the Alpha our Luna is sleeping around with the little mutt. I’m not getting caught up in the middle of that sh*t storm.”
I decide to just keep my head down. I’m tired, she drained all the energy out of me. I am going to look like a zombie in no time if I have to do this for another night. Nobody seems to know what exactly happened, and from the looks of it, I better keep it to myself!
Cook “There you are, you little runt!”
I hear him shouting, not realizing he is shouting at me until he grabs me by the nape of my neck.
Cook “You might want to kill yourself to get out of here, but I’ll be damned if it is blamed on me because you starved yourself!”
He drops a bowl, my bowl in front of me filled to the brim with fresh meat and blood. Sniffing the delicious smell, I never thought I would be able to get used to, by the way, I dig in as if I haven’t eaten in weeks.
Cook “Yeah, I thought so.”
He shakes his head cleaning the dishes while I eat, slowly regaining strength with every bite.
I hear a commotion outside when I lick the last little drop of blood out of the bowl, not forgetting my manners, I put it in the wash for Cook first tilting my head in gratitude.
Cook “Well get gone with ya! I know you want to see what is going on outside!”
He chases me out of the kitchen and I run outside to the square. Xavier is back. Mistress has given orders that he be let out of the dungeons once he has cooled off, but it seems to me he just returned angrier.
Xavier “Where is that little mutt?!”
He screams and I cringe, trying to hide behind a pillar. He looks around the square and I pull my ears back trying my best to not be seen. The next moment he is by my side
Xavier “There you are you, little bastard!”
He says grabbing me by my paw, and holding me upside down. Oh brother am I going to get it.
Xavier “Yes, you are! You outwitted me of all people at a game I thought up! How the f*ck did you do that?”
He asks while I am hanging upside down feeling like my hind leg is going to pop out of its socket. My eyes are wide as saucers and my one ear flopping forward and backward with stress.
Xavier “Oh, sorry mutt. I forget you are still a baby wolf.”
He drops me on the floor knocking the wind out of me, and I very carefully get up looking at him then at the others, and once he sits down the rest follow. All of them listening to what I have to say.
Thomas “Well as you know Xavier I live on the edge of town, close to the woods.”
I start trying to make up a little time to think of a lie so I don’t think of her and how she taught me, spending time with only me. Picturing everything I am telling them so all of them share it in the mind link. The smell of the forest, the sound. Out of the blue, I hear helicopter blades above my head and gunshots. I am back in that forsaken desert fighting people who don’t know who I am, they only know I am the enemy and they want to kill me. Rufus and I take cover and let the other soldiers cover us so we can get back into the truck safely, but we missed one. The soldier behind us is the unlucky guy to step right onto the detonator his pieces hitting me and Rufus while we climb into the truck. The sand is so thick in the air we wear our bandannas over our mouths just so we can breathe, but even that doesn’t stop the stench of death and burned flesh from blowing right through to your mouth.
The event playing in slow motion in my mind. I thought the army doc had helped me forget and move on. I feel the sweat forming on my skin, the adrenaline rushing through my veins. I might not have gone to university or looked like I was the town washout, but I did two years of service for my country before coming home and deciding I didn’t need the big city.
All of the wolves around me are quiet as a graveyard.
Idiot 1 “Shoot mutt! I never took you for a soldier!”
He says wiping a tear from his eye pretending it isn’t there.
Thomas “People and I guess in our case wolves don’t always want to share their deepest darkest pain,”
I say growling and howling.
Xavier “We are going to have to teach you how to talk. But first, you learn how to change form.”
His demeanor towards me has completely changed after seeing that memory. The pack spends the entire next day helping me to learn how to change at will. Each time hurts like hell, feeling my bones break and moving into place, but it gets better the more I do it. Around dinner time I get the hang of it and they cheer me on by changing into their human forms for a while so I can meet all of them face to face. I can feel her gaze on me like fire on ice, but I don’t dare look. It is surprising but it doesn’t even feel weird standing around with a bunch of guys with our d*cks hanging out for the world to see.
Selena “Well now.”
Her smooth silky voice comes from the balcony.
Selena “All my boys just the way I like them.”
She smiles making Xavier growl quickly and everyone else changing back to wolf form without even a second to think. For me, it takes about three seconds. Sorry, Xavier, she made me nervous. I apologize when all of us leave to have dinner. We can’t move into the hall fast enough.
Idiot 2 “Xavier is not going to like that!”
He says when they sit by the table next to where I get my bowl handed to me on the floor.
Idiot 2 “You need to get up here!”
He says, putting my bowl on the table making me jump onto the chair. The eating hall is a big open-air building, that looks like it used to be a church. It is now filled with tables and chairs and a kitchen, of course. There are still some of the old remnants left, like the lamps that were on the walls and the window frames.
Thomas “I know it is none of my business and that I am the runt around here, but I would like to learn so I don’t make mistakes. Why is he not going to like that?”
I ask, being the i***t this time.
Idiot 1 “Xavier is our pack Alpha, that means he is like our boss, father, leader.”
Thomas “Okay, that’s why he is stronger than everyone?”.
Idiot 2 “No that is something else. The blood we are fed every night with our meat?”
Thomas “Yeah?”
Idiot 2 “It is blood from her. Vampire blood. They feed it to us so we are stronger than other packs, we run faster, heal faster, are bigger, and have the advantages of walking on our hind legs and talking once we are taught properly as you will be,”
Thomas “Okay, but I thought their blood kills werewolves. And that still doesn’t explain why Xavier would be mad at the mistress. I thought she is the one in charge around here?”
I ask chewing on a piece of fresh steak.
Idiot 2 “No you i***t! Those are just stories, you know, fairy tales.”
Idiot 1 “She is the one in charge, but Xavier has this thing in his head that she is his Luna, it is what we call our pack mother, the female leader, the mate of the Alpha. He gets angry any time she shows interest in any one of us. If we aren’t careful to keep her at a distance he will tear you apart. Even if it was her idea. Xavier gets his blood straight from her. It makes him stronger than the rest. The blood is fresh and a bigger portion. None of us dare challenge him.”
He explains. Now I have to keep our little tryst a secret! If Xavier finds out not only will I be dead, I will be dinner!! I take my bowl to cook when I’m done and walk to the square thinking it will be quiet. The pack has mostly retired and knowing mistress, or at least the little I know from last night, she is in her bed enjoying the affections of Xavier. I will have peace and quiet to walk and think about everything I’ve learned.
I reach the pillars just before the square and hear voices. It’s her silky soft voice and that of Xavier. He sounds and when I look around the pillar looks like a beast next to her.
Selena “Xavier! I think we should be sharing more fresh blood with all the wolves!”
She demands and he growls.
Xavier “No!”
Selena “Are you saying no to your mistress?”
She stops and looks at him, her hair flowing softly down her back, her hands together in front of her. Her gown of silk blowing in the soft night air and showing her perfectly formed features.
Xavier “No mistress, I just don’t think it is a good idea to have too many strong wolves. How will you keep them under control if they are as strong as me?”
He asks and I can see the anger in his expression. They turn around and walk the other way with their backs to me. His hands are knotted together behind his back and his biceps are bulging as he tries to keep control over his anger.HisHis
Xavier “They will tear each other apart with anger if they are not able to control the blood as I can. You know how long it took before you had me under control. How long you had to chain me down in your bed.”
He says sounding almost desperate.
Selena “Okay fine then.”
She huffs sounding like a little girl who can’t get the present she wanted. Grabbing onto the side of her cloak turning towards the stairs she says.
Selena “Come, we have planning to do. There is a pack to the east of us that is getting too feisty for my liking and I want them gone.”
She sounds upset climbing the stairs with Xavier following her. His shoulders hanging slightly.
Idiot 2 “Here you are mutt!”
He grabs me by my shoulder.
Idiot 2 “We have been looking for you everywhere! It’s time for bed or you are not going to make it through training tomorrow.”
He carries me like I’m a puppy while I squirm trying to get loose from his grip.
Idiot 2 “I found him guys, skulking around the square,”
He shouts into the bedroom.
Thomas “I wasn’t skulking, I was trying to get some fresh air before having to share this room full of farts with you lot for the night.”
I dare say in a mind link earning myself some more farts.
Why did Xavier look like he had lost a battle against her tonight? I have so many questions but nobody to ask. The events of the day catching up to me, I yawn and fall asleep. My dreams haunted by her voice, her skin, the touch of her nails tracing my muscles.
