All had been academics devoted to the life sciences, mostly geography and geology, but with a specialty in the area known as the Canadian Shield or the Laurentian Plateau. In effect, it was a long stretch of Canada (and into the northern US) where the rocks were special. Mining was prevalent, and so were numerous geologic studies.
