Chapter Sixteen-1

2154 Words

We’ve entered unknown territory, and it seems neither of us has a compass much less a map for how to find our way out. We return from our honeymoon, and you are livid with me and rightfully so. When I entered that room in Mexico and smothered that girl, and then hung her body from the rafters, I just wanted you to be proud of me. I wanted you to understand how capable I am—and in a way, I guess you did. Still, it’s hard to see you so angry with me. It’s hard not to talk with you. We got married, and now nothing feels the same as before. The stakes are higher, but no one knows the rules. The day after we get back, you pack a bag and take off. You’re going to see your client. You need to stay ahead of what’s coming, you tell me on your way out the door, and yet so much remains left unsaid.
